Newcastle fans certainly need a lift after the disaster at Stevenage on Saturday, and it may just happen very soon.
Seb Larsson – in talks with Newcastle United
The news is that Newcastle United are leading the way in the chase for Swede Seb Larsson – according to the Birmingham manager himself, Alex McLeish.
Alex has said today that Newcastle have been given permission to talk to the player about personal terms, and the Birmingham club has accepted a bid from Newcastle for the player, thought to be anywhere between £1M and £1.5M, according to which reports you believe.
Of course, the Birmingham club will still be hoping the keep the 25 year-old Swedish International winger, but we had seen the reports that his contract – signed back in the summer of 2007 – still has him on £500K/year – or around £10K a week.
Sebastian will be offered more than that at Newcastle, and if he’s still as keen to come to Newcastle as he was when the Magpies were first after him 18 months ago, the deal could be struck fairly soon.
There are reports that Newcastle are harder now on deals than they once were, when Freddy Shepherd was giving out huge contracts to mediocre players, but there have been no problems with signing French International Ben Arfa, who was on huge wages at Marseilles.
We think the Newcastle club are still willing to pay the good wages out, but only when it is warranted.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is also interested in the player, but it would appear that Sunderland are not willing to pay too much for a player whose contract runs out in the summer, when he could be available for nothing.
Birmingham have been trying to sign the player to a new contract for a while now, and we have to think if it’s gone this far, he will not be signing a new contract at Birmingham, which was a rumor circulated over the weekend.
Of course that could still happen, but we are very hopeful Seb will be a Newcastle player shortly, and he will be a great addition to the Newcastle squad, there’s not much doubt about that.
Comments welcome.

Comment #42I love it how one week everyone hates Jonas and the next everyone loves him. To me he is one of our best players as he adds much needed width and flair. His final ball isn’t so good but some of the things him and Jose get up to on the left are very impressive. My team for when all injuries have been recovered..

I’d defintwly like to see Nolan as part of the coaching staff in the future.. I could defo see him as a future manager 🙂

Comment #43NUFC_Richyg01, No thanks m8. If Given had stayed we would have stayed up. But then again he went we went down and the prima donna’s went. Maybe we should be grateful.

Comment #44Cracking player, quality on ball and disciplined . But thought we were after creativity and pace, not something larsson has in abundance.
We need someone who can unlock defences and run at teams with pace. Hopefully we can get taarbet in too, doubtful as it may seem.

Comment #46GG- In fairness Given wasn`t getting any younger, a keeper of his standard should of had a cabinet full of trophy`s which he was never going to get with us. He stood by us for years, like Harper has. He was nothing like Owen,Martins etc. Given always gave everything unlike Owen etc.

Comment #48FOR SUNDERLAND:
Harper
Simpson, Williamson, Colo, Enrique
Larsson, Barton, Nolan, Jonas
Carroll, Best
Relies on players being fit of course, I would have Taylor in there and Tiote but one is injured and the other likely to be banned.
442 is the best formation for us imo.

Comment #49Not too sure about him, a few seasons ago he looked a good player but recently he really had been average. TBH if its between Seb and that Youssef El-Arabi i would go with El-Arabi because a) he scores ALOT more has over 10 goals this year thats more than Larsson has scored in 4 seasons or more b) he can play both Wing and Striker which Seb can only play Wing, so El-Arabi is more versitle which these days with our small team we need as many versitle players as possible.
If this is a signing then we will get one more player on Loan on transfer deadline day probably from Spurs or Man City.

Comment #50colwell, your right we need to get players who have pace and creativity, larsson will be a v.good signing, but we do need pace in the final 3rd.

Comment #52He’s a good player and his set pieces will help Carroll score more goals.
But I thought Pardew said he was looking for quick, athletic players on the wing? I do like Larsson but I think we could do with some pace in midfield and upfront.
I’ve heard Pardew wanted Zaini and Wright-Phillips but couldn’t get them.

Even Pardew must see that Routledge isn”t good enough. Larsson has proved for 3 years he’s a decent player.
Harps
Simo – Tayls – Colo – Bull
Lars – Bart – Nolan – Jonas
Best – Carroll
Don’t think Tiote will be able to play…shame.

Comment #56Se alot of people want´s to use him on the left. Since hes biggest asset is that he has a great rightfoot I think it would be a big misstake to have him on the left!
Have him on the right and he can use his right foot to find carroll, like Barton do.
I also think it would be great to have a player that is great on close freekicks! Today I think Raylor is the only one, so one that plays would be great, an extra threat there is something I think we desperetly need!
But he will never be used on the left! When he came forward at Arsenal he was supost to be a rightback that could play in the center of the middfield or at the right, so also good to have a better protection than Perch on the right!

Comment #60On Larsson being good at free kicks, he takes all Birmingham`s freekicks and has scored like once in 3 years from them, not that good. Still think Bentley would have been better!

Comment #72Willing to be proved wrong here but I believe Seb Larsson is an average player that will just swap improved tech ability V’s Routledge pace.
No better at crossing or free kicks than Raylor with marginally better pace.
Wenger lets very through the net and he let Seb go for 1 mill. If you can think of anyone else he was wrong on let me know – Upson does NOT count.
Quality over hopefuls please Pardew.

Comment #73Wonder if we will get Demba Ba dosent look like he is going Hammers as they are sacking Grant if they lose and getting Big Sam, and Hoffenheim have said if he doesnt leave in this window he will rot in the reserves rest of the season, Demba is a hugely talented guy big, strong and can play Wing (Wide Foward) or Center Foward and maybe if we are cheaky a Loan deal with view to Perminant Deal

Agreed. The perfect replacement is LEROY FER. The guy is amazing. We were set to sign him in the last transfer market but don’t know if true but the daily mail said he failed to agree personal terms. I would of loved him at Newcastle but if we got him i don’t think we would of ever had Cheik Tiote. He would not of cost over 5 million. Him and Tiote in the middle, it couldn’t of been better.

Comment #77I have read this blog for a long time and decided to comment for the first time.
I honestly think that, even know we all know it would be better to start larsson out wide right, I think pardew will keep starting routeledge out there and use larsson as a sub/injury backup.
For the Sunderland match I think the line up should be (without tiote & if we get larsson):
______Harper______
Simps__Williamson__Colo__Jose
Larsson__Barton__Nolan__Jonas
____Best__Carroll____
And by, say the manure match on 16th April I think our strongest line-up will be:
______Harper______
Simps__Williamson__Colo__Jose
Larsson__Tiote__Barton__Jonas
___BenArfa__Carroll___
w/subs (Krul, RTaylor, STaylor, Guthrie, Vuckic, Routledge, Best)
with that team we will be up for the fight 😀 hopefully..
