It’s not the first time that Sky Sports has reported that Newcastle United are interested in a Uruguayan World Cup star.
Mauricio Victorino – are Newcastle interested?
28 year-old Uruguayan center-back Mauricio Victorino was linked with a possible move to Newcastle two weeks ago, and today there is a report that Blackpool have now made the first move for the player.
Victorino was one of the star players for Uruguay in their wonderful run to the semi-finals of the World Cup last summer, when they were eventually were narrowly beaten 3-2 by the runners-up the Netherlands.
A number of Premier League clubs are said to be tracking the Montevideo-born, 6′ tall defender, and he currently plays for Chilean club Universidad de Chile.
Victorino previously played at Plaza Colonia (Uruguay), Veracruz (Mexico) and Nacional (Uruguay), before moving to Chile in 2009.
He has played only 13 times for Uruguay and made his debut for his country back in 2006.
We have a hard job believing Newcastle would be after another center-back, with Fab Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and young Tamas Kadar all on long term contracts at the Tyneside club.
But of course he would come quite cheaply, so maybe he could turn out to be a bargain, but he also comes unproven at the top level of English football.
What do you think?
