Newcastle In Talks With Jay Bothroyd

The Daily Mirror is reporting this morning that England striker Jay Bothroyd is in talks with Newcastle over a January move to Tyneside.

Jay Bothroyd – in talks right now with Newcastle

The 28-year-old Cardiff player is said to be one of Newcastle’s top targets, but this is one of the first time we’ve been linked with the striker in January.

But Jay could come at a bargain price,  since he’s out of contract in the summer and presumably could be picked up for a couple of million in January.

Everton, Fulham, Birmingham and Blackburn are other clubs said to be interested, but the news today is that Newcastle are first in for the player, and we have to think Bothroyd came up in discussions with owner Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew earlier this week, and the club have gone after the player immediately.

Jay was called up for the England squad for the friendly against France in November, much like Andy Carroll was, and he made his debut in the second half as a sub coming on for the current 22 year-old Newcastle striker, who started the game..

The Mirror says this move, if successful, will bring up more rumors that star striker Andy Carroll will be leaving Newcastle, but that’s just not true, since Pardew has always said he wanted another experienced striker at the club.

And that didn’t change after Leon Best scored his great hat-trick last week.

But if  Jay does arrive on Tyneside, we suppose it will open the gates for the Mirror and gossip press to come up with stories about Carroll leaving Tyneside for any number of clubs – how boring – but what’s new?

Jay was born in Islington, London, and has played at Coventry, Perugia, Blackburn (loan), Charlton, Wolves, Stoke (loan) and Cardiff City.

Bothroyd stands 6’3″ tall, and has been outstanding at Cardiff City, and in 111 appearances has scored 40 goals, and has been in sparkling form this season for the south Wales club.

In total Jay has scored 83 goals in 329 first class games, and certainly is a quality striker.

He joined Cardiff from Wolves on a three year deal in the summer of 2008 for £350K, and has played for England at every single level from U16.

The only surprise is that he’s a little old for players Newcastle have been after for the last 18 months, but at 28 years of age he will still have a good number of seasons left at the top level.

We have to believe that a number of top clubs will be after this player, and it would be a bit of a coup if Newcastle were successful in signing the striker.

Let us know what you think about this news – we have to think he would be an excellent signing for Newcastle.

(Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema is willing to join Aston Villa on loan if the Spanish giants sign Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor) if thats true then we should go for him not really in a relegation battle as such like villa n arfa could be influential.

Not sure about Bothrody if I’m honest. On the plus side though, he did single handedly anhialate Sunderland in his Coventry City days. If we could get him for the weekend maybe?

    From last thread

Bothroyd would not be a cracking signing. He’s the ultimate journeyman and what can he do that Best can’t ? Plus it would just mean endless high balls, as if we don’t have enough of that at the moment !!

Give us some technically good ball players like El Arabi, Tarabaat to make us not so one dimensional.

Bothroyd is a typical pardew signing, very ordinary and mediocre.

Mind you Pardew dropped Tevez for harewood before curbishley saved the day at west ham, so this is the calibre of manager we’ve got, absolute garbage.

With all the excitement and speculation going around about potentially exciting, skilful and creative signings , he is trying to dump us with Bothroyd. It stinks.

toon_dog – Supposedly Ben Arfa and Benzema don’t like each other.

They fell out during their time at Lyon.

Not overly excited at the prospect of Bothroyd to be honest. Average at best.

Not a big fan myself. I just dont think he would be able to do it in the Premiership. Look at Chopra, bang them in for fun in the Championship, put him in the Premiership and he was shite!

Plus he is 29 this year! If we have to go for a Championship player I’d rather sign Kris Commons and Shane Long

If you go back to the Tevez debarcle – He was dropped as he had refused to train due to an ‘Injury’ that his agent Kia Joorabchian claimed that he had. If your going to hate on our manager why don’t you support the Mackems instead!

would be a good addition pacey and an ete for goal @rotunda heights it could be argued that at the time marlon harwood was one of the most in form strikers in the prem league and no other manager seems to have been able to get a couple of goals from him. bothroyd could be a good foil for andy. anybody know where roque and swp likely to be heading?

No to Bothroyd, he’s not an improvement on the strikers we have.

But there again Pardew isn’t an improvement on the manager we already had, so we’ll probably sign him.

Ziani is not coming here, not because of Ben Arfa tho:

“Apparently, Ziani flew to Turkey yesterday and has all but signed for Kayserispor who are currently 4th in Turkey’s ‘Super Lig’.

It is reported that Kayserispor coach Shota Arveladze managed to win Ziani over despite interest in the player from Galatasaray.

The deal will apparently take the form of a loan until the end of the season with an option to purchase for 2.5m Euros thereafter.”

What a truly pathetic and ignorant moronic response. If I don’t like the manager go and support Sunderland.

Does that apply to all the other crap managers we’ve had like Sounness, Allardyce, Kinnear ? If you don’t like the manager go and support Sunderland.

Am I meant to not have a mind of my own What a total loser you are. Jeez can’t you come up with anything better than a 9 year old school playground remark. Next you’ll be telling me your dad’s bigger than mine !!!

West ham were going down under Pardew. Curbishley was able to get on with Tevez and they survived the season. That’s why Tevez is always a legend at Upton park and is always welcomed back. My mate who supports West ham said there petitions to get rid of Pardew as they couldn’t stick his style.

Supporting Newcastle for 45 years and liking the manager aren’t mutually exclusive. Try a bit of independent thinking for once. SBR, KK and CH got my vote, Pardew doesn’t, simple as.

Living in Cardiff I have seen a lot of Bothroyd and I can honestly say that Bothroyd would definitely be a good signing for any prem club – but not Newcastle. Even with Bellamy in the team, Bothroyd is the player who makes the difference. Without him Cardiff are nowhere near their best – the playoff final was a perfect example. His style of play would not complement Carrol’s as they are two similar (strong strikers who hold the ball well)

Has Strolla played at full international Level?

That said tho, the worrying thing on Bothroyd is his age (28) and also that he is not a prolific scorer, I mean:

83 goals from 329 Apps at all levels is not setting anything on fire is it!
    (Avg 0.25 goals per game)
