The Daily Mirror is reporting this morning that England striker Jay Bothroyd is in talks with Newcastle over a January move to Tyneside.
Jay Bothroyd – in talks right now with Newcastle
The 28-year-old Cardiff player is said to be one of Newcastle’s top targets, but this is one of the first time we’ve been linked with the striker in January.
But Jay could come at a bargain price, since he’s out of contract in the summer and presumably could be picked up for a couple of million in January.
Everton, Fulham, Birmingham and Blackburn are other clubs said to be interested, but the news today is that Newcastle are first in for the player, and we have to think Bothroyd came up in discussions with owner Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew earlier this week, and the club have gone after the player immediately.
Jay was called up for the England squad for the friendly against France in November, much like Andy Carroll was, and he made his debut in the second half as a sub coming on for the current 22 year-old Newcastle striker, who started the game..
The Mirror says this move, if successful, will bring up more rumors that star striker Andy Carroll will be leaving Newcastle, but that’s just not true, since Pardew has always said he wanted another experienced striker at the club.
And that didn’t change after Leon Best scored his great hat-trick last week.
But if Jay does arrive on Tyneside, we suppose it will open the gates for the Mirror and gossip press to come up with stories about Carroll leaving Tyneside for any number of clubs – how boring – but what’s new?
Jay was born in Islington, London, and has played at Coventry, Perugia, Blackburn (loan), Charlton, Wolves, Stoke (loan) and Cardiff City.
Bothroyd stands 6’3″ tall, and has been outstanding at Cardiff City, and in 111 appearances has scored 40 goals, and has been in sparkling form this season for the south Wales club.
In total Jay has scored 83 goals in 329 first class games, and certainly is a quality striker.
He joined Cardiff from Wolves on a three year deal in the summer of 2008 for £350K, and has played for England at every single level from U16.
The only surprise is that he’s a little old for players Newcastle have been after for the last 18 months, but at 28 years of age he will still have a good number of seasons left at the top level.
We have to believe that a number of top clubs will be after this player, and it would be a bit of a coup if Newcastle were successful in signing the striker.
Let us know what you think about this news – we have to think he would be an excellent signing for Newcastle.
