It seems that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has had a big rethink as to who he should be bringing in during this transfer window.
Leon Best – has impressed Pardew
It may be that Jay Bothroyd will not leave Cardiff City now, and Alan Smith is out injured and left the Stadium of Light on crutches yesterday.
Smith injured his ankle, and was replaced in the first half by Danny Guthrie.
And it was good to see Danny put in a decent display yesterday, after he had looked woeful in his last game at West Brom, and we’re sure that’s how Danny’s feels too.
Alan Pardew seems to have been impressed by the displays of his strikers since Andy Carroll has been out, and may be rethinking the necessity of bringing in another striker.
Pardew told the local Evening Chronicle today:
“I have been really buoyed by Shola and Leon – they may just have saved me a problem looking elsewhere.”
“And it’s not just them. Peter Lovenkrands has done well too and we’ve got Phil Airey just beneath them.”
“Shola and Leon were as good as the home strikers at Sunderland in Darren Bent and Gyan. They did very well indeed.”
“That is good for us because we have Andy carrying an injury.” “This has altered my thinking in the transfer window.”
“We might be looking to improve in other departments now.”
It’s interesting that Alan never even mentioned Nile Ranger, when he was discussing his strikers in that statement above.
Alan was asked about his reported interest in Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd today, and this is what he said:
“It depends on other areas. We may look to strengthen there instead now.” “Leon Best under me has been very good indeed.”
“He got the hat-trick against West Ham and, although he found it tough at Stevenage, that was possibly a bridge too far for him because he had been out so long.”
“People say he was out of sorts, but I can only judge what I can see and I don’t know if I feel I want to change things.”
Those words from Alan Pardew will be a huge boost for the strikers who have filled in for Andy Carroll, and the boys have risen to the occasion and showed they are no duffs.
It’s good when players do well at the club, even if they have poor starts , which of course current captain Kevin Nolan had, after he joined in January of 2009, in the season we were relegated.
So you always have to give players sufficient time to settle, and some take longer than others.
It will give the strikers confidence, and especially Leon Best, whose hat-trick against West Ham was one of the highlights of the season.
With Alan Smith now out for a while, Alan Pardew may want to bring in a defensive midfielder, although Danny Guthrie and Dan Gosling can both play in that position, and we feel sure Gosling will be pressing hard for a starting position, once he gets some games under his belt..
And even Fab Coloccini, who had an outstanding game for Newcastle yesterday, can play in defensive midfield too.
Alan had said before yesterday’s game that he wanted a win and then a new player brought in this week.
But having lost the win in the last minute of injury time yesterday, it now looks doubtful if either one of those will happen.
