Alan Pardew Has Big Rethink On Transfer Targets

It seems that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has had a big rethink as to who he should be bringing in during this transfer window.

Leon Best – has impressed Pardew

It may be that Jay Bothroyd will not leave Cardiff City now, and Alan Smith is out injured and left the Stadium of Light on crutches yesterday.

Smith injured his ankle, and was replaced in the first half by Danny Guthrie.

And it was good to see Danny put in a decent display yesterday, after he had looked woeful in his last game at West Brom, and we’re sure that’s how Danny’s feels too.

Alan Pardew seems to have been impressed by the displays of his strikers since Andy Carroll has been out, and may be rethinking the necessity of bringing in another striker.

Pardew told the local Evening Chronicle today:

“I have been really buoyed by Shola and Leon – they may just have saved me a problem looking elsewhere.”

“And it’s not just them. Peter Lovenkrands has done well too and we’ve got Phil Airey just beneath them.”

“Shola and Leon were as good as the home strikers at Sunderland in Darren Bent and Gyan. They did very well indeed.”

“That is good for us because we have Andy carrying an injury.” “This has altered my thinking in the transfer window.”

“We might be looking to improve in other departments now.”

It’s interesting that Alan never even mentioned Nile Ranger, when he was discussing his strikers in that statement above.

Alan was asked about his reported interest in Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd today, and this is what he said:

“It depends on other areas. We may look to strengthen there instead now.” “Leon Best under me has been very good indeed.”

“He got the hat-trick against West Ham and, although he found it tough at Stevenage, that was possibly a bridge too far for him because he had been out so long.”

“People say he was out of sorts, but I can only judge what I can see and I don’t know if I feel I want to change things.”

Those words from Alan Pardew will be a huge boost for the strikers who  have filled in for Andy Carroll, and the boys have risen to the occasion and showed they are no duffs.

It’s good when players do well at the club, even if they have poor starts , which of course current captain Kevin Nolan had, after he joined in January of 2009, in the season we were relegated.

So you always have to give players sufficient time to settle, and some take longer than others.

It will give the strikers confidence, and especially Leon Best, whose hat-trick against West Ham was one of the highlights  of the season.

With Alan Smith now out for a while, Alan Pardew may want to bring in a defensive midfielder, although Danny Guthrie and Dan Gosling can both play in that position, and we feel sure Gosling will be pressing hard for  a starting position, once he gets some games under his belt..

And even Fab Coloccini, who had an outstanding game for Newcastle yesterday, can play in defensive midfield  too.

Alan had said before yesterday’s game that he wanted a win and then a new player brought in this week.

But having lost the win in the last minute of injury time yesterday,  it now looks doubtful if either one of those will happen.

Comments welcome.

Just seen Darren Bent has handed in a transfer request, great news if you ask me. Not as a possible transfer target for us though.

Sign Darren bent, pair him with Carroll and we will get in Europe, which would get you about 8 of the 18 million back.

Shola and best are decent on their day and Sunday was a day you couldn’t fail to be up for. But they are not proven goal scoters and appear too inconsistent. Would still like another poacher in the squad.
As for bent, ouch that’s got to hurt. Relegation threatened villa a better prospect than the mackems, still chuckling!

It looks as though Asley has told him to forget spending any money. So the compliant Pardew is now making up stupid reasons why the current lot do not need reinforcing.Fact is, Best and Lovenkrands are not EPL standard, And Ameobi is only decent in about one out of every five appearances, which is about 6 a season. you couldn’t make Pardews reasoning up.

Players we should sign who im liking in current form are
    – Quagliarella
    – Marco Borriello
    – Chinedu Obasi
    – Stevan Jovetic

Quagliarella f****d up his knee against Parma and is out for the rest of the season
Borriello is on loan in Roma with a view to make it permanent and the word is Roma has to sell some of their players to trim their wages, because Roma is on sale. He’ll probably join them coz Milan is packed with talent now with Cassano on board.

Don’t know about Obasi but Jovetic could be someone which could fall into our category, the sad thing is that there are bigger and richer clubs after him so i do not think that we have any chance on him.

Curmon @ 7 – Theres always one who bring Ashley into the topic isn’t there….. (ock!!!…

Why do you think that is the reason for Pardew to not buy a striker?? Why do you think Ashley isn’t putting any money into the transfers??

Have you already forgotten the £5m spent on HBA??

Go boil yer heed yer prat!!!

“Alan Pardew seems to have been impressed by the displays of his strikers since Andy Carroll has been out, and may be rethinking the necessity of bringing in another striker”

Was he impressed or is it a a diplomatic way of saying that Ashley’s asked him whether we REALLY needs a striker… based on a Best hat-trick and a good show from Shola on Sunday and a winger adn a LB.

All this with the caveat that if he wants to buy, then he’s got to sell (Carroll, Barton, Enrique perhaps)?

So, there we go then.. SNAFU!

Curmon is right in my opinion.
Apart from Carroll all we have are journeyman strikers.
Yes they’ll probably get us by but Carroll deserves a good quality partner if we want to go further.
“Getting by” wont’ win us anything I’m afraid.

Petey – Chinedu Obasi is a fantastic player…v quick with the ball at his feet, I watched him well before the World Cup at Hoffenheim etc, and he’s just a class player.

Best, although he did alot of chasing, looked light-weight yesterday and only played well 5 minutes before he was subbed. Did he put the effort in because he knew he was coming off?

If he can play consistently then Best could be OK, Shola imo has the ability to put the ball in the net and some of his play yesterday was very good. He attacked their goal a few times and we had no one following in for support and when he headed that pass into space to run on too I thought was great play!

Sorry SLB @11, I hadn’t read Curmon’s post but I guess I’m a cynic too. In fairness though, if MA has asked the questions, they’re ones that any good budget controller would ask.

I mean no sleight on Ashley and trust that Pardew’s not going to prove to be a Mr Compliant…. like Hughton wasn’t near the end?

You obviously have no ambition for this club, if you are content to see it languish in the nether regions of the EPL or Championship i suggest you transfer your affections to hartlepool darlington or middlesbrough where your pathetic aspirations will be satisfied. Now f@@@ off and do us all a favour

I’m sorry, but I agree with solaidback. If Pardew wants a new striker, he can sell Best, Shola, Ranger, Xisco etc… If he feels these lads are good enough (maybe not Xisco, but you never know), why does he need to sell anyone?

Not being funny lads, but a 10-15 goal a season striker is going to cost money we don’t have.

I don’t think this shows any lack of ambition at all. We’re currently ninth on the table and, with some key players back from injury, can go further up. Better than another spell in the fizzy pop league, no?

Personally, I’d like to see Best up front with Carroll sometime this season. And it would be nice to see Carroll paired with Lovenkrands again. They were pretty good together.

Whatever you want to say about Shola, he’s got us out of some pretty tight spots before now. Irrespective of his inconsistency, I wouldn’t be without him.

If we’d had a goal-scorer yesterday, that game would have been won long before added time. Shola wasted 2 glorious chances, both from terrific balls from Barton. I know I’m an old bugger, but I can just imagine Wor Jackie and Supermac running on to those 2 balls – game over!

tbh i would like to see best get a chance with carroll he looked okay pre injury and hasn’t looked to bad since coming back, further down the line i would like to see a striker come in Rodallega of pie heads if they go down i think is quite underated and only 25 then release lovenkrands but a left winger is more important as jonas is better on the right and ben arfa will play left maybe gradel from leeds or lallana from saints and let routledge go , Fox from burnley as cover for el toro cos he played prem last year handled it ok is and only 23 prob only cost a couple of mil

Im starting to hate Pardew, he keeps doing these interviews like 3 times a day, seems he is more interested in the press than our club. and talking about Airey over Ranger and not even methioning him shows he hates Ranger (maybe he kicked him out of Southmapton?) When you say Ranger you are too lazy pick it up if he see’s Ameobi who hasnt given any workrate for over 18 years do you think he will take your seriouslly? no of course its like saying you nathan delfouneso that he has to score more otherwise he wont play at Villa although they have Heskey who hits the net 10 times in the last 3 years!

we need a striker and tbh this article shows he will sell or loan out Ranger because he just plain doesnt like his workrate but then again he loves how Ameobi doesnt do f all! double standards but also this article shows he knows he CANNOT buy a striker as they are too expensive for Fat Ashley and he knows he is running out of time to buy anyone as he said he wud have someone by Sunderlands game. just another cop out article like the one about he wants to keep rather than buy all he is doing is he knows he is too slow i nthe market or doesnt have players in mind yet and is putting it off with these rubbish excluses. we need a striker ASAP our striker after Andy has 3 measly goals Best did this in one game,Ameobi has played alot of games and has only got 3 wow

it would have been a great deal easier at the start of january to state that we would not be buying anymore players after HBA .
I still think the team lacks depth in certain areas wings ( jonas, routy, barton,) if 2 of them 3 get injured thats when the problems start as we have no other wide players who can do a job there.
feruson is adequate cover for jose at left back

I really dont think we need anyone right now, our aim for the season is staying in the league which i think we will manage quite we have players to come back. I think the main rebuilding should be in the summer when it will be easier to sign better players. Seams like some of our fans are getting too carried away right now and are wanting too much too soon!
