Cardiff City manager Dave Jones, in a rather surprising statement, at least at first blush, has said today that Jay Bothroyd will not be joining Newcastle this month.
Jay Bothroyd – staying at Cardiff?
The 28-year-old striker has been linked with Newcastle all last week, and there were widespread reports that had Newcastle in contact with the Welsh club about Jay’s availability in January.
Bothroyd is out of contract in the summer, and Newcastle were said to be willing to pay aorund £2M to capture him in January, before he became a free agent in the summer.
But Jones has ruled out any selling of his star players in the transfer window, as the club is still in with a very good chance of promotion.
Dave told the South Wales Echo today:
“We will not be selling any of our key players,” “Jay has been offered a new contract.”
“That’s all we can do. It’s his decision whether to accept it, but he is under contract for the rest of this season.”
What has happened here is that Cardiff City have very recently offered Jay a new contract, and they are obviously hoping he will accept the new terms.
But since he is allowed to talk to other clubs right now, there’s no reason why Newcastle cannot continue to speak to the player and offer him terms.
Those terms could be to come to Newcastle in January, and they would have to agree a fee with Cardiff, and Cardiff would have to agree to sell the player, which now may be unlikely.
Newcastle could even get him signed on a pre-contract agreement, where he would commit to join Newcastle in the summer for nothing, as a free agent.
But the crux of the matter is whether Jay wants to stay at Cardiff.
If he doesn’t, it may be better for Cardiff to sell him and get around £2M for him now, and also hope to buy a replacement in the January window.
Either that or lose him for zilch in the summer, which is also a possibility.
It’s not an unreasonable thing that Jones has come out and said, if indeed this is what is happening – since they would obviously like to keep Bothroyd at the club, especially if they gain promotion in May.
