John Carver Trains Newcastle Squad – Appointment Lauded

6:53 pm, Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 127 Comments

John Carver got straight down to work today after signing on today, as the Newcastle United Assistant Manager through the end of the season.

John Carver - training with the Newcastle squad today

Carver’s appointment has been very well received by Newcastle fans, if the comments on this blog are anything to go by.

And we dare say that John was always the favorite with the Geordie fans, and as we said earlier today, we now have a link back to the Bobby Robson era on Tyneside, through Carver being back at the  club.

In May of 2009, just after Newcastle were relegated, John  Carver was seen with Alan Shearer a few times, and he had just conveniently resigned from Toronto FC in late April, and it could have been that he was all set to become the Assistant Manager at Newcastle under Alan Shearer.

Certainly that’s what we reported at the time, but from early June of of that year, the Newcastle owner just seemed to ignore Alan completely.

So it could be that John may have some current  reservations about the owner, but the main thing is for John to get stuck in with the training and help Alan as much as he can.

And these pictures today certainly seem to show that’s just exactly what he’s done, and now to form a good working relationship with Alan Pardew, and also with Newcastle’s other two first team coaches, Steve Stone and Willie Donachie.

Newcastle Assistant manager and captain talk this afternoon

Somebody’s getting an earful!

A great shot of Steve Stone – sign him up!

Great to have John back at the club. With Carver, Beardsley and Stone we have a group of coaches that really care about the club, which can only be a good thing.

Bent joining The Villans is all good. Them mackems always bragging about how despite us taking 4 off them this season there higher than us, that hopefully should be the last of that! :)

  • 16 GeordieMeerkat // Jan 18, 2011 at 8:14 PM

That £18m could net Sunderland Insomnia and a good target man for Gyan to play off which would improve them. Let us hope the signings actually go the way of Riveros, da Silva and Angeleri.

    Boater;

Can I just clarify that I have done nothing illegal. I am just promoting an affiliate marketing website in order to show people how to get free stuff and in return get free stuff myself. Hundreds of people have done this, my site has been checked thoroughly and there is nothing wrong with it.

    Carrolsinger;
You only need 25 signups for an iPad. I was only sharing information, but I won’t do this anymore as it is a nufc forum so i apologise.

  • 18 GeordieGerman // Jan 18, 2011 at 8:40 PM

free giveaways, very nice of you to realise that this is an NUFC forum and not a sales pitch. Try at a Makem blog.

I am not a mackem! don’t insult me like that.

Sorry if I caused any offence, but please don’t tell lies like “you will be bombarded with spam” when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Off topic but… Jus read mono sissoko and camoronesi are interesting us.. Momo competin with cheick would be canny good I think. N Uve always been a fan of camoranesi but he’s probly a bit old for us.

    I’ve

  • 22 Ryan_NUFC88 // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:09 PM

Camoronesi would be good experience, sissoko would be a good signing too! Need a new wingers though, surely we have someone lined up to replace routledge?

  • 23 TonyGreenSupreme // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:12 PM

Forget about Camoranesi he is 34 and would demand a huge wage, plus no sell on value. End of.

  • 24 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:13 PM

sissoko would be a great signing, routledge still to be officially announced so am convinced that could be part of a deal to bring taarabt to us as there is supposedly the option to buy for qpr if they are promoted

  • 25 al // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:14 PM

I think pardew is freein up wage funds and sees Barton bossin on the right and with gosling comin back with the ability to play on the right with abit of pace, in addition to HBA might infact feel comfortable n wants to sure up our defence with a new CB to partner colo (Williams) n a good CM at the calibre of chieck..

    Jus a thought

  • 26 al // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:16 PM

Sissoko is reported to only be on loan (talksport), make what u will of that. Fulham also supposed to be interested

  • 27 baro // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:22 PM

Great to see John Carver back at Newcastle. He is a great man and has tons of experience. Great decision by Alan Pardew.

  • 28 al // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:27 PM

  • 29 Thump // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:30 PM

If anybody has watched the interview on nufcTV, I’d like to ask you a question: does he remind you of Sir Bobby at all? Just the passion and the way he talks about the game… it just says “Sir Bob” all over it.

Momo S? As in Mohammed Sissoko? Isn’t he 25? I’m surprised he’s let out on loan tbh.

If it’s Moussa snap him up right now.

  • 30 al // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:35 PM

Nah it’s mohammad, I’d still have him like. Moussa would be incredible and is impossible

My mate has said Momo Sissoko is expected in Newcastle for talks on Friday. I don’t believe anything until i see them holding the scarf by the way.

And how accurate is your mate?

  • 38 kilcline // Jan 18, 2011 at 9:59 PM

baro, personally i don’t believe him but i saw the above post and he told me before i read that.

Better than Smith, although my nan with a hip replacement is better.

I never expect much in transfer windows mate, i was so happy with HBA and want to keep hold of AC and Barton.

  • 39 colwell // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:00 PM

momo sissoko wtf? Tiote not good enough now? Lets get rid of a winger and bring in a DM makes sense!

  • 40 baro // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:00 PM

Anybody think Carver will add a little twist to our footballing style? I’m more than certain we will be a better team as Carver can help specific choices with Pardew.

  • 41 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:02 PM

sissoko is qaulity player and sumtimes we could play him n tiote we wud b very strong in the middle when we play the stronger teams

  • 42 kilcline // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:04 PM

Carver is a quality appointment, know he was rated under SBR.

Sissoko would be massive for us, only if it a 6 month loan. Lets get one thing straight, Ashley is not going to spend big on any player anymore, he is looking for bargains and loans like HBA and Tiote…..

  • 43 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:10 PM

  • 46 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:13 PM

  • 48 arfa chance // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Sissoko wud be great. Still think a bid for leroy fer and wolfswinkle would be accepted no one is spending in dutch league as no one has the cash too

  • 49 Thump // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:21 PM

If we’re getting another CM in, that means Pardew is looking at resting players and keeping up the competitive edge – effectively developing a second starting XI.

Barton and Gosling (I hope to god not Guthrie) could be our new RMs.

  • 50 Spuggy // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:25 PM

Where does Taarabt usually play? CM or can he play on either wing?

He certainly fits the profile of the players we are going for and the QPR loan…..hmmmm. Surely we wouldn’t loan routledge out without a replacement in the bag.

In terms of another DM (sissoko), we do need cover/options, as what happens when Tiote is out.

Of topic I was listening to talk sport today and someone came on and said Manu should sign that defensive midfielder that plays for newcastle but couldnt remember his name. Alan Brasil and Chicken didn’t know who they were talking about – Andy Carroll you mean stated Brasil. Then after clearly getting a word from the producer, you mean Tiote he says, Aye tiote says the caller.

Lol, amazing how top 5-centric talk shows are, including MOTD. Tiote and Barton have been the new stars of the premier league this season – but they hardly get a mention.

  • 51 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:25 PM

  • 59 Ryan_NUFC88 // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:43 PM

If Charlie Adam was on his way I doubt it could be for 8m, the highest bid for him has been either 3.5 or 4.5m from brum or villa for us to basically double everyone else’s offer is unrealistic due to mike Ashley wallet being too hard to open…

  • 60 Mancgeordie // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:43 PM

ok agreed it aloan move for sissoko would give us a better squad also a more solid line up for certain matches but still would like to see some genuine lb cover in case we lose enrique for a length off time, what about fox from burnley 23, cheap and played prem last year and handled in pretty well

Of course we could sign Adam – we could offer him better wages, and he’d be a great signing for the club.

There is no way in hell Ashley is going to spend 8m on him though…

  • 63 davybtoon // Jan 18, 2011 at 10:47 PM

    247footballheaven;
    Thank you. I appreciate that.

On Sissoko, i think he’d be a good signing If we could get him on loan and sell smith. We could then go with a 4-2-3-1 formation at times with Tiote and Sissoko holding and Ben Arfa, Jonas, Barton or Nolan as attacking midfielders supporting Carroll.

I really hope we get a creative attacking midfielder as well. Ideally it would be Kranjcar or Wright Phillips.

”charlie adam the hard working pass master must surely be worth 8 million. would be good news if true but i am a bit surprised fergie hasnt tried to buy him as he would make a great replacement for scholes”

This is the funniest thing i have read in a while. I can’t believe you would put Charlie Adam in the same bracket as Paul Scholes.

  • 92 GeordieGerman // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:04 AM

    lewman, think it’s 8

  • 93 free giveaways // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:05 AM

Charlie Adam is worth around £5m in my opinion. No way is he in the same class as Scholes or players like that.

Great passer but he’s slow and lacks mobility. That’s why the top 5 teams aren’t interested in him. He is similar to Tom Huddlestone. Great passer, great vision, but not mobile or athletic enough to be a great midfielder.

I would rather have Michael Carrick, he’s a toon fan after all. We should have bought him in 2003 but Freddy Shepherd didn’t want to pay £3m for him because he was out of contract at the end of that season.

  • 95 lewman // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:23 AM

i dont think for a minute that he is as good as scholes but who is apart from gerrard, xavi, iniesta etc… but he is better than carrick and anderson and is capable of running games and would imo be a good buy for man u to play in the position that scholes plays in.

also speed doesnt matter for a cm if passing is his game, just look at xavi probably the best in the world in the middle of the park and he is slow as fcuk.

  • 96 GeordieGerman // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:27 AM

iamnufc, video made me think that he does about the same as Jonas except passing. But that’s probably what Keegan wrote to Wise when told to look at Xisco on YouTube. :-)

  • 97 free giveaways // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:32 AM

lol Charlie Adam is better than Anderson? really? Have you seen Anderson play recently?

I can’t imagine Xavi being told as a youngster he’s not good enough to play for Rangers in the SPL and being let go to a championship side.

If he’s that good why are Villa and Brum the only sides interested in him ?

can u imaging taarabt and hba going at teams would be insane n sjp would be electic on matchdays with them 2 playing

  • 99 iamnufc // Jan 19, 2011 at 12:49 AM

haha true geordiegerman but i think he is more skillfull than jonas and def has a much better end product.. but have my doubt whether he can do his defensive duties as well as jonas

Hopefully we can wake up in the morning with a new player wearing the Black n’ White. There has to be a new player arriving b4 Saturday since Wayne Routledge is officially gone to QPR. My favorite choice would be Taarabt. His creativity would kill and terrorize defenders, imagine Ben Arfa on the left wing and Taarabt on the right!?!
Krancjar would bring technical improvement his passing is brilliant. But, at the moment we need creativity and players with skill to damage opposition’s defenses. SWP would be a late game substitute changer like Nile Ranger.

  • 106 ToonOz // Jan 19, 2011 at 3:17 AM

Adam Hammill is about to sign for Wolves

  • 107 Sgt. Heagerty // Jan 19, 2011 at 3:20 AM

    Baro,

Spot on my fellow yank toon souljah, pardew would not have let routledge go with us short on wingers unless he was pretty sure he had a better winger coming in. Let’s hope.

Carver might be the best piece of business the club does this january except for hba maybe. Carver is a direct link to Newcastle United’s glory days under the late Sir Bobby Robson. Any coach who apprenticed under Sir Bobby is worth his weight in gold. Just think lads, Carver knows what its like to be apart of champions league football at nufc. Is there any link left at the club to those great years not so long ago, besides strolla. Newcastle United is a gigantic club and its high time we started acting like it. We made the top 20 in biggest football clubs on the globe while we were in the championship for pete’s sake. We had like the 3rd highest average attendence in england in the championship for pete’s sake. I get it, we got a reality check by getting relegated, but lads it could have been the best thing to happen to this club. It has forced us to mend our ways as far as doing business and encouraged us to grow talent not spend rediculous money on big name mercenaries. At the begginning of the season we all just wanted to keep our seat at the table. (stay up) The heck with that lads, we have the talent to make the europa league this season. 3 savy buys and we can make it. We dominated scumderland for 180 minutes and they have been impressive most of the season taking big scalps and sitting in 6th place.(bent put the minnows in their rightful place hilarious). We have taken big scalps and on our day we can beat anybody in this league. We have proven that. However we can also be beaten by any club we have proven that as well lol. My point is its time to get back to being newcastle united a top 5 club in england and not survivalists….

Europa league lads, i will make my pilgramage to newcastle 1st return to european nightsat sjp next season…I got faith, carver is the link, lets get 3 solid players and push the table starting with the evil spuds and dirty hairy deadsack…lol

    HWTL

Remember lads, we are NUFC, a Mighty , History and Tradition Rich, Gigantic of a club, we are not blackpool…..

  • 108 hk_nufc // Jan 19, 2011 at 4:01 AM

good post Sgt. Heagerty. NUFC should set the sight as top 6, rather than survival…

However what’s most urgent is to get a winger (both Hammil & Taarabt are good on youtube), jonas, hba and a new winger would be good enough to play in two wings.

    Howay The Lads!

  • 109 mattyNUFC // Jan 19, 2011 at 4:06 AM

that was one of the most entertaining skills video i’ve watched (Taarabt – post 94 i think).

if we’re interested, we need to get him signed up now. and same for hammill, if we have interest, there’s no reason we can’t fork out 500-800k on him

  • 112 al // Jan 19, 2011 at 6:34 AM

Jus got lme from work n I’m sorry to start on a negative note but it is half 6…

Why does everyone think gosling should be playin on the left?? He isnt a lefty at all is he??? Seen quite a few ppls team sheets n i dnt see y he’a vein slotted in there

  • 113 arfa chance // Jan 19, 2011 at 6:55 AM

Hammil looks amazing for £500k can play both wings

  • 114 al // Jan 19, 2011 at 7:15 AM

Hammil seems to fit our bill and looks impressive if he can perform like that vid. 500k is nowt, we could get that back if he flopped!

If we signed him, Williams n poss momo sissoko i’d be so chuffed over this window. Strong squad in the making!

  • 115 al // Jan 19, 2011 at 7:23 AM

Go on then taraabt too ;)

  • 116 hk_nufc // Jan 19, 2011 at 7:30 AM

    muna@109

If it’s true I’ll be disappointed NUFC miss on this.
NUFC must beat wolves to get him easily, but NUFC must table a bid first. ACT NOW!!

  • 117 hk_nufc // Jan 19, 2011 at 7:52 AM

Just take a look at QPR’s stat,

    STAT LEADERS

    Appearances
    Patrick Kenny, 28

    Scorer
    Adel Taarabt, 12

    Assists
    Adel Taarabt, 10

    Shots
    Adel Taarabt, 92

    Red Cards
    Matthew Connolly, 2

    Yellow Cards
    Shaun Derry, 7

    Fouls
    Clint Hill, 36

    Wow

  • 118 Ryan_NUFC88 // Jan 19, 2011 at 8:32 AM

Just watched the taraabt video, he looks quality! The thought of him and HBA in a team with Nolan, Barton and Tiote and Carroll would be pretty immense. I live down in the midlands and was chatting to some forest fans at work about taraabt and they said by far he is the best player in the chamionship and think we should sign him. Thought they’d have more knowledge as I have no reason to watch the Football League show =D

  • 119 Sinner // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:04 AM

    No for taarabt.
We need to go for either Kranjcar or Hammill.
Either one of them would be class!

  • 120 davybtoon // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:16 AM

hammill hasnt signed for anyone its all jus rumours so far, but hes only been linked with blackpool n wolves am sure he would come to us over them far cheaper better option than swp

  • 121 MykToonFan // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:26 AM

Wright-Phillips’ agent has confirmed we’re interested:

    http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2011/01/19/shaun-wright-phillips-is-possible-nufc-signing-61634-28011794/

To be honest, there’s better options. I think he’d be a very good player for us, but he’s inconsistent and a bit of a mercenary.

If we get him I won’t be complaining though.

  • 122 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:32 AM

A bit of news about this morning stating we ARE interested in SWP

  • 123 davybtoon // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:35 AM

actually its swp is interested us not us interested in him, to old, wages to high even with pay cut, but saying that when he his good he is really good

  • 124 Toonkistan // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:36 AM

according to ssn ..hammil has signed for blackpool

  • 125 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jan 19, 2011 at 9:36 AM

He is a player I do like – on his day.

But like you say – age and money against him.
