There is news in the Daily Mail today that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is said to want to sign the Irish midfielder Stephen Ireland.
Stephen Ireland – while at Manchester City
Stephen Ireland has had a dreadful time of things since he got out of Manchester City and signed for Aston Villa only last August.
But since then of course former manager Martin O’Neill departed suddenly, and as happens in football, the new manager Gérard Houllier, is not a fan of the Irishman.
It’s quite obvious that Houllier wouldn’t mind at all if Stephen left the Midlands club, and the news today is that Alan Pardew at Newcastle is interested.
Before Ireland joined Aston Villa in August, we thought he would have been a great signing for Newcastle, but the fee was a little high. It was estimated at £8M, and he was in a part exchange with former Newcastle player James Milner.
And as luck would have it, he made his debut in the 6-0 thrashing of Villa at St. James’ Park.
When Houllier joined as manager, he was concerned that Ireland didn’t live closer to the Aston Villa club, since he seems to have kept his home in Manchester.
That wouldn’t be a concern at Newcastle, since he would need to move to Tyneside, but his wages may be a stumbling block, since like most former City players, his wages are very high.
Stephen, who was born in County Cork, is still only 24 years old, and has played 177 times for the Eastlands club with 23 goals, and appeared 12 times so far for Aston Villa.
We would be delighted if this story is true, and we see Stephen Ireland arrive on Tyneside this month.
