Newcastle United Interested In Stephen Ireland

There is news in the Daily Mail today that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is said to want to sign the Irish midfielder Stephen Ireland.

Stephen Ireland – while at Manchester City

Stephen Ireland has had a dreadful time of things since he got out of Manchester City and signed for Aston Villa only last August.

But since then of course former manager Martin O’Neill departed suddenly, and as happens  in football,  the new manager Gérard Houllier, is not a fan of the Irishman.

It’s quite obvious that Houllier wouldn’t mind at all if Stephen left the Midlands club, and the news today is that Alan Pardew at Newcastle is interested.

Before Ireland joined Aston Villa in August, we thought he would have been a great signing for Newcastle, but the fee was a little high.  It was estimated at £8M, and he was in a part exchange with former Newcastle player James Milner.

And as luck would have it,  he made his debut in the 6-0 thrashing of Villa at St. James’ Park.

When Houllier joined as manager, he was concerned that Ireland didn’t live closer to the Aston Villa club, since he seems to have kept his home in Manchester.

That wouldn’t be a concern at Newcastle, since he would need to move to Tyneside, but his wages may be a stumbling block, since like most former City players, his wages are very high.

Stephen, who was born in County Cork, is still only 24 years old, and has played 177 times for the Eastlands club with 23 goals, and appeared 12 times so far for Aston Villa.

We would be delighted if this story is true, and we see Stephen Ireland arrive on Tyneside this month.

I would love to get Ireland. If he can get back to the form he had at City he would be a great coup.

1 good season? He has been a top player for a while and much like every other player at Villa he has fallen out with Houllier who has fallen woefully short of replacing M O’N. If we can get ireland on loan at first then we can’t go wrong really. Would be a great addition and if anything happens to Nolan or Cheick then you have a good replacement ready. If he fails to find form then he gets sent back to Villa. 🙂

Ah yes, he’s the lad who lied to get out of the RoI squad. Best quote on Wiki to this day is:

“Further deception was invoked by the cork man when he refused to admit that he at the time did not even have a girlfriend or a granny or even an uncle to which he claimed was recently divorced from a granny in-law to which he also did not have.”

We have an abundance of this tyoe of player.
He sees himself as an attacking midfielder!! Central….read his comments on BBC sport site. He feels out on the wings he is out of position!!

Who does he replace in the middle???

NOLAN? BARTON?TIOTE? GOSLING? Thes four are jockeying for 2 maximum 3 spots in cntre of the park. Then we have Guthrie, and Smith, Vukcic…all central Midfielders.

HBA, who wants to play through the middle, tahst why he signed as CH told him thats where he would be playing!!

Come on Guys, its not Rocket Science……WHY do we need Stephen ‘*my granny has died’ Ireland???

    * he once said his granny had died because he couldnt be arsed playing…..

Did anyone see Gradel’s performance last night? He looked quality, never stopped running – Still pressing defenders in the 92nd min. Skillful, Godd pace, winning headers and a good deliverer of the ball – All against a top class defence!! What a signing he would be.

at the right price, hed be decent, hes been woefull at villa this season and if their 8million valuation has dropped, and dropped considerably to around 4-5 million then hes worth a punt.

Agreed Angryman, Ireland has many fall outs with coaches particularly Mark Hughes in Man City because he was played on the wings. We need to sign a winger. Get Kranjcar!!!

Ireland would be a great signing.. only on loan though.. we have nothing to lose.. if he turns out quality we sign him.. if he fails to impress he goes back to Villa .. i think we all know by now that Pardew wants to play Barton on the right hand side.. and why not ? he’s been the best english player this season by a mile and he’s playing ”out of position” i say keep him on the right.

Ireland is a good creative attacking midfielder who makes things happen in and around the box. Better than Guthrie, more mobile and fitter than Smith, its a no-brainer for me, we should have him as a game changer, and an improvement to our paper thin squad. Guthrie, Vuckic and Smith would have to up thier game to get a shirt ahead of him. If they did, happy days, we would have a strong competition for places, which keeps everone on their toes. Its just a good job that Joey, Super Kev and the Bull dont need competition to perform at their best every week…….

I rate him but we dont need another player with an attitude problem at the club.

He has been very outspoken in some things and that is good but sometimes the reasoning is all wrong.

    Sign SWP instead!!!!

Lynxie, and Ireland has performed better than Guthrie, Vukcic and Smith this season hasnt he?

Spiderman Barton does not like playing right wing. He said as much after the West ham game at the Boleyn Ground!!!

He also said it since then, just cant remeber when ….

Jokes not worth telling if it needs explaining, Angryman 😉

Come on lads, Ireland would be a mint signing. I know that we’ve got a couple of lads fighting for places… but you’s are the first to whinge about Smith and Guthrie. Gosling’s got little experience and a bit of an unknown quantity really, so take them out of it… and we’ve got Nolan, Barton and Tiote. We need a bit more competition in the middle – the best clubs do.

Like someone said, he can also play on the right. Or, we can put Barton on the right. Or, we can use him in a 3 man midfield.

He’d be a great signing. We need a bigger squad with quality, experienced players… he’d totally fit the bill.

All we need now is to keep a hold of Enrique, and get in Van Aanholt again…

Striker would be nice too. McLoven don’t cut it in the Prem, for me at least.

Ireland is one helluva player – When he WANTS to be.
But he is also a knobhead of the highest order. And I think he’s killed off at least 3 grannies as excuses not to play for his country.

ok we all agree we dont need more CMs but perhaps someone might be leavin and i dont think we should buy a cm and put him on th wing if he doesnt wanna be there. I agree max gradel looked poor but i did get mixed up as they have another coloured guy on the other wing but looked to premature to play in the prem.

Angryman the Angry fan Posts 17 and 19!

I agree with both posts 100 percent. I would take Chamberlain but not Anderson.

People say we need pace in our squad, do we really need inconsistent players with pace though. The Premier Leagues better players are not blessed with great pace, apart from Bale and Nasri, who we could never afford. There are not many consistent performers around blessed with pace anymore, the game has changed from 5 – 15 years ago when pace was everything.

Angryman @ 26: What exactly are you on this morning? Your comment makes absolutely no sense at all, I never said that Ireland or Barton should play on the wing, and where spiderman came in I will never now. Keep taking your meds man. 🙂

By the way, I like the look of that Adel Taarabt kid from QPR, he would fit the bill nicely. get him signed before someone else gets a steal.

I dont understand everyone being against signing Ireland.

I come on here everyday and hear people complaining that we have no decent cover for positions and that we have a thread bare squad, yet when we’re linked to a player the first thing anyone says is we dont need them and the youngsters should get a shot instead.

    Make up your minds!

We shuld definately get Ireland if the opportunity is there as it will provide some good competition in the middle and on the right.
