Stephen Ireland Reported To Be Joining Newcastle On Loan

The Daily Mail is reporting that Stephen Ireland is set to join Newcastle on loan until the end of the season.

Stephen Ireland – joining Newcastle?

The Aston Villa midfielder has not had a good time of it since he joined Villa last August from Manchester City, and seems not to be rated by new manager Gerrard Houllier.

Stephen has made just 6 Premier League starts this season, and is said to have had a big argument with Gerard Houllier in early December.

But we don’t much worry about that,  since Houllier seems to have had bust ups with lots of  Villa players since he arrived, with Stephen Warnock today being the latest to be leaving Aston Villa, after disagreements with the Frenchman.

Contrast Houllier’s travails at Villa with the smooth and common-sense way in which  Alan Pardew has taken over at Newcastle, from a previous manager who was enormously liked on Tyneside.

Ireland was part of the player exchange deal that saw former Newcastle winger, James Milner, go to Manchester City last August, and Stephen at that time was valued at £8M.

Celtic and Bolton were also said to be keen on the midfielder, but the SPL club could not afford Stephen’s huge wages – so we suppose if this story is true, Newcastle could afford those wages?

We don’t know if this story is true, but it would be perfect if Ireland comes on loan, and if he can play anywhere near his best form, then Newcastle may try to sign him in the summer, but he will not come cheap, that’s for sure.

Stephen, who was born in County Cork, is still only 24 years old, and has played 177 times for the Eastlands club with 23 goals, and has appeared 12 times so far for Aston Villa.

We think if this deal does happen, Stephen will be enthusiastically welcomed on Tyneside, simply because this lad’s a very gifted footballer – there’s no doubt about that.

Hatem Ben Arfa and Stephen Ireland in one Newcastle side equals creativity galore!

Comments welcome.

I hope his knee injury is just a rouse to cover his lack of playing time at Villa.

There is a world of football players out there and all we hear about is paying top dollar for some out of favor/chronically injured Prem league bench warmer. Surely NUFC can go out anywhere on htis planet and find healthy, playing every week talent available for the same price.

Dont think there will be any signings just yet, Pardew has to meet Ashley for the 2nd time to try and get some funds.

If Ireland really is injured then why are we trying to sign him when we need cover now.

Must say the Legear link is not one I have heard before.

Here is some info on him, for those of you, like me who have never heard of him:

Jonathan Legear (born 13 April 1987 in Liège (Age 23)) is a Belgian midfielder who, plays for Anderlecht. He moved to Anderlecht from their rivals Standard Liège in 2003. He scored his first goal in the Jupiler League against Standard Liège in the season 2004-05.[1]

He was initially registered to the football club of J.S Thier (Jeunesse sportive du Thier-à-Liège), a small club near Liège at the age of eight, a club where he showed a promising future in Belgian football. From there he was scouted by the Standard Liege Academy who recruited him in 1998. Despite the tacit agreement between the top three clubs in Belgium, which prevents transfers between those clubs academies, Legear moved from Standard to Anderlecht in 2003.

In the Jupiler League 2007-08 season, Legear made the breakthrough into the Anderlecht starting XI and has since featured regularly in the team’s Jupier League and European competition matches. This has been a result of his increasing level of performances, as well as Anderlecht’s lack of attacking options on the right wing. He has been touted as the next Christian Wilhelmsson, with similar hair color and speed on the flank.

Legear made his debut for the Belgian national side in October 2010 in a European Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan

Too many people panicking when our situation isn’t much worse that it was 2 months ago. Tiote will be back soon and as for smith most people didn’t want him playing anyway. Oh and Gosling and HBA well they wasn’t available anyway and Staylor and Rtaylor injured too. So Really the team isn’t in that bad of shape just Carroll missing.

I’d like Ireland in to provide us with some much needed strength in depth. Would fit in well to our midfield if he can regain the form he showed at City. Something Barton is beginning to do for us now.

Agreed – If Ireland finds that form in a short 3 months time it’ll be magnificent for us. But that is a big “if” right now.

Legear is extremly quick would be a good signing if he would settle straight away although i would prefer matty jarvis or giving Lua Lua a chance when he’s fit, hope ireland signs if we can get his head involved which we will do with the players weve got he will be an immense signing

Think of the service Carroll would get with those guys.
Think we have a pretty decent set of midfielders,
Could use a couple of backs and another CD
Of course a decent center forward would`nt hurt.

Yeah why not add to the squad a bitter and disruptive personaility who still thinks he should be playing with the money mercenaries at Eastlands.

Get over it son you just werent good enough and hopefully you’ll think we’re not good enough either because the last thing this club needs right now is someone to rock the boat.

Try Blackburn mate they’re looking for a replacement for Diouf 🙂

Could be an amazing signing if he can be motivated and get back to the form he displayed at City (or better).
I think the spirit in the squad would rub off on him.

If the loan is agreed I hope a price to buy is negotiated now and included in the loan deal.

He also needs to move to the NE as I read his not living near Brum was a problem at Villa.

Why any intelligent member of football management would want to sign Diouf is absolutely shocking. He is and always will be trash – both on and off the pitch.

i think this team could get us to maybe 6th – 7th spot in the league with players like williamson taylor guthrie gosling ranger lua lua vukic kadar krul foster fighting out for spots on the bench with all those players being still young looks promising for the future.

    would be a good loan signing but are we not getting a bit top heavy with midfielders? another good youngser to nufc. in fact so many good youngsters the nufc team could be the following for the next 5 years or even longer as all are currently under 25;

    krul
    simpson taylor kadar enrique
    vuckic gosling tiote ben arfa
    carrol ranger

nufc.com adds Ireland to a list of our deals that have stalled due to the parent club not willing to pay some of the players wgaes during a loan deal. So this maybe another one that is pure rubbish! I hope not because Ireland is an excellent player! I’m desperate for a signing now, we’re looking a bit thin with all these injuries at the minute!
