We had an article out last night that reported that Alan Pardew yesterday had said in a post match interview, that he was close to signing a top Newcastle player to a new extended deal on Tyneside.
Joey Barton – staying on Tyneside because this is where he wants to be
And we guessed that player may be Joey Barton – we hoped that player would be Joey Barton.
And today the Sunday Sun is reporting that Newcastle are indeed close to securing Joey on an extended deal.
The new contract could be announced as early as next week, as negotiations seem to have gone very smoothly with Joey’s agent, Willie McKay, who has said often that his client was very happy at the Newcastle club.
And as expected (and hoped), it looks like the 28 year-old Liverpudlian, who was on a massive £65K/week at Newcastle, has agreed to take a pay cut to stay on at St James’ Park.
Now that’s what we like to see from our players.
Joey has had a terrible history of violence off the pitch, but he has very much corralled that behavior over the last two years, and apart from one or two small departures, has behaved himself very well both on the pitch, and off the pitch.
And of course he’s just a huge favorite with the Newcastle fans, and will be even more so after this news.
Joey is playing his best football ever, and he’s one player Newcastle can build their new team around – and that’s just exactly what Alan Pardew wants to do.
Next up will be 24 year-old Jose Enrique, and we think Jose could be even quicker in signing a new deal at Newcastle, and his new contract could even be with improved terms.
Jose was on lower wages than Joey (£40K/week?), but has become one of Newcastle’s best players over the last couple of seasons, an is another huge favorite with Newcastle fans.
And Jose has also said he wants to stay at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5What a coup this will be to secure both players – enrique on a long deal and joey until he retires!!
These are the solid foundation this club need to build upon. Hope there’s some truth in it.

Comment #8I really think joey has rediscovered himself, both personally and the footballer this season.
Some of his passing and skill have been world class, and his consistency of play is much better now. Long may it continue – he’s passionate about newcastle and can go down in history as the reformed prodigal son and a toon legend if he can keep his head.
Who would have thought that a year ago??!

Comment #11i told you already, if our player have heart like Carroll, like Ben Arfa, Nolan, Jonas, and S.Taylor, than we will succeed in any team we have match, coz we all united. This what very important in Football and good example of this united is Manchester United, Arsenal.
These MU and Arsenal, they rare buy or adding to their squad and if they buy, the player is not involve in they first currently, but waiting and train hard with other to have good communication.

Comment #16Great news and great to hear that not all footballers are knobheads that only care about money. Good on ya Barton, after all we are the club that stuck by him and glad he’s repaying it

Player of the season.
If him or his agent can only keep their gobs shut about him being the best in the country, he might round off a good year with another cap or two.

Great news. I respect the man for his loyalty. In a way he had to because the club stood by him in his darkest hours. 2013 we will be challenging top 4

Comment #25The way he has played this season he should be getting a raise, never mind a pay cut.
Just dont understand why people are celebrating and happy to see him take a pay cut ?

Comment #26chuck @25:
I dont think people are celebrating Joey B taking a pay cut, they are celebrating his loyalty and devotion to our cause. Personally I think he deserves, and has earned a pay increase, but such is the manner of the man. He has totally won me over, I wanted him sacked two year ago. But now, Joey Barton symbolises everything that is good about our team, He CARES. What would you rather have, another Michael Owen?
