Birminghan After Shola Ameobi – No Chance!

12:25 pm, Monday, January 24th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 65 Comments

Anybody who watched the Arsenal – Birmingham game on Saturday would think Birmingham would have to improve substantially, if they are to avoid relegation this season.

Shola Ameobi – going nowhere

Birmingham were just not at the races at the Emirates,  and they certainly looked a poor side, and we know that has to be a concern to the Birmingham fans – because the very last thing they want is a seocnd relegation in three years, and a third relegation in five years.

That would probably be a good definition of a yoyo side.

Newcastle supporters now know what it’s like being relegated from the Premier League and will sympathize – because it’s absolutely terrible.

It seems that manager Alex McLeish has today come in for some criticism from Birmingham’s acting chairman Peter Pannu, who sent out an open latter  to supporters,  basically saying things were  just not good enough.

But Alex has said the Blues board, the players and himself  are all still pulling in the same direction.

McLeish has said today that Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi is under consideration – but we can tell him right now he will be wasting his time.

First of all the local lad still has a job to do at Newcastle, and the Magpies are hardly going to help them out with a players who could get Birmingham out of trouble, when Newcastle are not yet safe from relegation this season.

But Birmingham still have to sign somebody who can put the ball into the back of the net, since that’s their huge failing this season, with only 21 goals scored in their 22 league games.

We wish Birmingham the best  in getting the striker they so desperately need – but he will not be Shola Ameobi.

Comments welcome.

ED – We wish Birmingham the best in getting the striker they so desperately need – but he will not be Shola Ameobi.

    Comments welcome.

Since the day I saw him for Newcastle u19s I have been begging for someone to sign him. Please be true!

  • 7 jesus was a geordie // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:35 PM

I have to say Ed, a fair few fans would disagree with you, and incidentally me, when it comes to letting Shola go!

I personally want to keep him. He’s scored important goals for us throughout his career and he is Black and White to the core! I just can’t imagine him being his usual frustrating self in any other colours!

He’s the 2nd highest scoring Tyne/Wear derby player EVER, only behind Jackie Milburn!

The only plus point in selling him, would be the lack of time left on his contract and whether or not we want to offer him a new one? Is it better to make a bit of money off him than nothing at all, or could the goals he scores whilst running down the remainder of his contract be worth the 50m+ that we get from staying up?

  • 8 lesh // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:36 PM

    @Geordie69 et al, a question….

Who’d be next the next target for derision then? Best?

  • 9 Brutooon // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:36 PM

if we got a decent striker then lets give them ameobi for FREE

this is only the time when Ameobi is wanted by other team.

  • 10 sweendog // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:37 PM

we defo can’t sell ameobi .. we still need another striker ourselves ..

  • 11 Irish Geordie1 // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:37 PM

They reckon joey ready to put pen to paper…. sweet…

  • 12 lesh // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:38 PM

Jesus @ 7, I agree as he’s always steped up when he’s been needed – what the heck do folk want?

  • 13 Edd Case // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:40 PM

Shola and go free with a packet of crisps too. Monster Munch, pickled onion if you really want.

He’s had over 10 years at our club and has never been able to fill the potential he ‘may’ have.
So, if a decent offer comes in, see ya later Shola.

  • 14 jwheelie12 // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:43 PM

If thy offer £5 million, then im sorry to say but we’d be stupid to turn it down.

We could add £2 million on to that and go after Horau who is 12 times better

  • 15 Mac // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:44 PM

    Taxiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii for Strolla

  • 16 gorskino10 // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:44 PM

With Stoke signing Carew, West Ham have had a loan bid to buy accepted for Demba Ba (much like our Arfa deal pay under half for the loan then a few mill more to buy) he IS AN AMAZING player, why dont we try and beat Hammers to him tbh he would choose a team like us over hammers and would suit our style of play a guy who works hard and can score and is very strong PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ PARDEW DO YOU JOB AND GET THIS GUY IN NOW!!!!!!!!!

  • 17 Magpietillidie22 // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:46 PM

I’m sorry but, I would sell Shola in a heart beat. Great lad, geordie to the core but come on, the guy has had plenty of time to step up. Yeah hes popped up with some important goals but christ, he has never ever done it on a regular basis OR enough.

We are very weak up front at the minute for a club our size. I mean if we had Carroll and bent for instance we would be pushing the top 4! We need a striker of real quality if we ever want to push for those european places again imo and all our striker bar Andy Carroll dont fit the bill. They are good squad players but we need a new first team partner for carroll to push on

  • 18 greg // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:48 PM

  • 19 Brutooon // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:52 PM

Ameobi, please go to Birmingham !

We will easily find your replacement (younger and definitely BETTER than you mate)

  • 20 Jamesthefirst // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:53 PM

As fans we would all sell Strolla, still can’t believe he is at the club

But can’t see Padrew letting anyone go in Jan.

We currently have a championship quality strike force (best is not good enough either).

    First 11 Starters in Feb

Jonas cannot cross the ball and until we get a proper premiership quality striker, Nolan is still the better option from Loven, Best and Strolla

  • 21 jesus was a geordie // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:02 PM

We are far from having a championship attack!

We have the 3rd and 4th highest scoring players in the league and the 1st n 2nd highest scoring Englishmen…They cost a combined total of £4m whilst Tevez and Berbatov cost approximately £56m more and have only scored 10 more between them!

Gutierrez is so underated by the fans it’s unbelievable. Yeah his crosses aren’t great but the amount of things he does for the team in a match is crazy…Also, no Ben Arfa? howay man!

  • 22 Sinner // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:02 PM

Got to agree Ameobi is not a great striker, but every time i watch this video of him.
I feel like he is a fcking legend at Newcastle!

  • 23 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:05 PM

Ill give him a lift to the Midlands as long as we get a replacement!

  • 24 Brutooon // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:08 PM

Ameobi been a waste of space for the last 10 years

give that chance to a younger, better and cheaper striker, he will score MORE than what Ameobi contribute

  • 25 Shot Bru // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:12 PM

Ameobi is a good squad player..i wouldn’t sell him..he’s worth more to us than a couple of million quid.. and certainly wouldn’t swap him for Larsson..

  • 26 Rotonda heights // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:14 PM

he’s always stepped up. hello !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 in 10 he steps up.

  • 27 Brutooon // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:16 PM

he past his best, well when is actually his “best” time during his long 10 yrs career?

  • 28 gorskino10 // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:16 PM

dont you think Jonas should be converted to a CM or CAM or something i dont think the wings suit him at all if he is in the center he could take the ball from Tiote and move it foward and pass to wingers or have a good run and try to find strikers or shoot would open more parts of his game he could do end of the day his workrate is AMAZING and we need that!

  • 29 Lyons // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:17 PM

I for one am grateful for some of the crucial goals shola has come up with when we have needed them most. I do however think maybe i is time for both him and NUFC to move on, we need to strengthen our strike force whether strolla mcloven or best goes. We need a fresh proven striker in.

    Either way cheers shola

  • 30 Lyons // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:19 PM

i thought jonas did alrite on the right wing on the weekend when he swapped over.

Um btw routledge at QPR this weekend gone! Best man on the pitch, mainly played as an attacking midfield link and did really well.
Taarabt had a great game too, he would be soooo goood to get in.

  • 31 lesh // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:31 PM

    @26.. Rotonda

Of course he’s not the most prolific of strikers but you can’t deny he’s scored some pretty improtant goals for us.

We need ot retain him as a squad player and yes, we do need someone to sit alongside Carrol regulary.

Judging by Collo’s goal on Saturday, maybe he’s the man? Only jesting!

  • 32 Nojdani // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:35 PM

We do not need Shola. IMO we should offload him and give Ranger his chance.

  • 33 GEORDIE69 // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:36 PM

    Lesh Comment 8

Best needs time to prove whether or not he is good enough for the top level. He has done nothing wrong up to now. We have had years of inconsistent performances from Shola. In my opinion we would easily be able to replace him with a better player. Shola is local, so surely that would mean even more effort in his workrate? I have been watching him since he was about 16 so I have had enough time to form an opinion. As for Best, I personally don’t think he will be good enough, but he deserves a fair chance and I would love to be proved wrong. I want every player in a black and white shirt, regardless of there background and off the field problems, to succeed.

  • 34 ende // Jan 24, 2011 at 1:58 PM

    Please take him Brummies

  • 35 North Atlantic Magpie // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Let him go!! He never plays a good second half. Always too tired.

  • 36 Black n whiteSi // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:09 PM

Shame as he’s a geordie but defo let him go he’s just tag along with us, he’s never been our first choice and never will be

  • 37 lewman // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:09 PM

shola has scored crucial goals for us before and he seems to do well when coming on as a sub for someone else.
the one thing that i would say is that he lacks motivation and i am not sure how well he could motivate himself when playing for the brummies.
i would be sad to see him go as he makes a good backup striker as he does score sometimes and never complains about losing his place, its just he cant pass and is often off target with his headers.

  • 38 Mancgeordie // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:10 PM

Thanks for service strolla shut the door and turn the light off on your way out

  • 39 Mancgeordie // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:16 PM

don’t need a replacement til the summer best or ranger could probably do as good up top on his own and carroll doesn’t get inj that often just play

    jonas——————–ben arfa-

just get a better right att like al arabi or barnetta he is back in about 3wks

  • 40 Davies // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:22 PM

I still say keep him. He’s come in handy over the years when we’ve needed him, and I think he’s still got a bit left. Okay, so he’s not Benzema, but WTF do you expect???

  • 41 Davies // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Wonder if we cuold swap him for Benzema….

… Real would let him go if they could get Adebayor…

  • 42 will // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:28 PM

if you want to talk about scoring some vital goals, a certain titus bramble score some vital goals for us too when he was still playing for Newcastle, didn’t make him a great player though!

  • 43 Toon Sweden77 // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:32 PM

Come on Brum, give us an offer we cant refuse..

Lets say £500.00 or a strait swap for Larsson!!

  • 44 xfer // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Taxi please!!! Had enough of him. Pops in the odd goal, but too consistently inconsistent and lacks the energy level that a Newcastle player should have. He looks like the only one who doesnt care, so who cares if he is a Geordie!

  • 45 john_cena163 // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:37 PM

  • 47 Mancgeordie // Jan 24, 2011 at 2:38 PM

just not clinical enough to seriously considered as i said ranger and best could do just as good a job

  • 48 Toon Sweden77 // Jan 24, 2011 at 3:10 PM

Would love to see Xisco given a chance!!

  • 49 emate // Jan 24, 2011 at 4:15 PM

Ameobi should have left our club years ago!!! He is lacking in skills!

  • 50 CapeToonian09 // Jan 24, 2011 at 4:30 PM

AP should def let Shola go, even if we dont get anybody to replace him. He cost the team to many goals, we all hav seen enuf games to know this. If you put all our strkers in the same scenerio I cant help but to think Shola would fair the worst.
As long as he is in the squad they will play him, meaning more & more wasted chances. GET RID GET RID GET RID

  • 51 callie9 // Jan 24, 2011 at 4:44 PM

    Sell him he’s s h i t .

  • 52 Oleg G // Jan 24, 2011 at 4:57 PM

    jwheelie12 // Jan 24, 2011 at 12:43 PM

If thy offer £5 million, then im sorry to say but we’d be stupid to turn it down.

    ARE YOU SERIOUS? hhhhh…..

If they offer 5M ? Who?
Who will offer 5 million for him?
I like him, he is a fan of the club and for that you gotta love him. But as a player. He is one of the worse ever. Yes, he does score, but most of the time he doesn’t and he is super inconsistent. And also not exactly PL quality.

We should sell him and get a fast short striker.

  • 53 CapeToonian09 // Jan 24, 2011 at 5:14 PM

The most frustrating thing is that there are players that are so much better than Shola sitting on the bench week after week. When are they going to realise this?

  • 54 CapeToonian09 // Jan 24, 2011 at 5:15 PM

Im sorry Shola, but your playing realy shite

  • 55 joe // Jan 24, 2011 at 5:34 PM

What is the obsession with jonas’s crossing? Yeah his crossing is poor but do people not realise that wingers who just run down to the byline and keep crossing are OUTDATED!!!

  • 56 terencelim // Jan 24, 2011 at 5:40 PM

I would rather give Xisco or Nile Ranger a starting chance. Young players need chance. They could turn into the level of Jose Enrique or Collocini, who knows?

Shola has been a waste for so many years, he pretended injured during the Ipswich Town medical check up. He always gain the trust of the managers during the trainings but didn’t produce in the real matches.

Please go Shola, and I never appreciate you at all.

  • 57 Rotonda heights // Jan 24, 2011 at 8:34 PM

Couldn’t agree more Joe, 95% of crosses are always headed away

  • 58 Whitecap // Jan 24, 2011 at 10:22 PM

I think 3/4 of you are crazy. Shola is easily the 2nd best striker on the team. Why he gets so much criticism for being the 2nd best striker on the team is beyond me. If Shola is so terrible then what does that make the other strikers on the squad? Don’t criticize Shola, criticize the other strikers who can’t take his place by proving it on the training ground.

  • 59 Brutooon // Jan 24, 2011 at 11:27 PM

    Shola score some crucial goals
Shola also miss some crucial chances (chances that can avoid our relegation 2 years ago!)

When Carroll is back, Carroll-Best is our 1st choice striker partnership.

  • 60 terencelim // Jan 25, 2011 at 3:44 AM

Shola could be the second best striker in the team, but he’s the 1st striker wasting most chances.

  • 61 terencelim // Jan 25, 2011 at 3:45 AM

And he doesn’t defend. Strikers in modern football NEED to defend.

  • 62 Brutooon // Jan 25, 2011 at 5:58 AM

Look at Carroll, he defend and attack cos he bleed black and white. he want to win for the club he love

    1) Lazy
    2) No passion for the club (dont care if we win or not…)
    3) Miss so many chances (look at his goals per game)
    4) Poor first touch
    5) 10 yrs career without an England Cap??? Joy Bothyoth(sp?) and Nugent did well than him!

and ht he is a geordies by name but not by HEART.

Sorry Ameobi, we gave (Tooo) many chances to you, its time you pay us back by moving away from the club!

  • 63 Brutooon // Jan 25, 2011 at 6:10 AM

do a little math earlier and come to this result,

    he start : 154 times

    sub: 112 times

    Goals : 59 goals

missed chances : 10 million times

  • 64 Phil K // Jan 25, 2011 at 11:49 AM

    God almighty !!!
Birmingham remind me of a panhandler, offering ludicrously low amounts for a passerby’s watch and trinkets.
    And it’s effing apt.
They’ve over-stayed their time in the Prem.
    Think microscopic, BE small.
£1.5 mill for a striker who actually scores in the Prem…..Jesus wept…..

  • 65 Phil K // Jan 25, 2011 at 11:52 AM

    Lesh – you’re spot on.
Geordie69 and co will just turn their spite on another as scapegoat.
This feller is typical of the kind who attack Shola with how many goals ? And defend Ranger vigorously – who has ONE and missed probably more chances that Shola in less games.
