Newcastle Still Haggling Over Stephen Ireland’s Wages

Newcastle are still in negotiations with Aston Villa over signing their 24 year old central midfielder, Stephen Ireland, on loan.

Stephen Ireland – on aorund £65K/week in wages

The news on Sky Sports this morning is that the major item that is holding up the loan deal, is just how much Newcastle are willing to pay of Stephen Ireland’s massive wages of around £65K/week.

But that seems to be the one issue, and we have to assume that Stephen Ireland is keen to arrive on Tyneside, and of course as part of the deal, there will need to be a transfer fee agreed between the clubs, in case Newcastle decide to make the moved permanent this summer.

There have been some concerns about Ireland from Newcastle fans about the lad’s character, but we cannot see this being a problem, but of course if it is then Newcastle will just not sign the lad up in the summer.

Stephen has not had a good time of it over the last 18 months or so, with being ousted by the big signings at Eastlands, and then being ignored at Aston Villa by new manager Gerard Houllier, after being brought in  by Martin O’Neill.

And with the good news that contract negotiations are going well with Joey Barton,  we also have to believe that Newcastle are willing to pay the going wages for top players – but only for those players who deserve them.

The Ben Arfa deal was done so smoothly, and we know the youngster was on good wages when he was at Marseilles, so this view that Newcastle may be measly with their wages may bot be true.

But the club will no longer pay over the odds, which the Tyneside club was even famous for,  when Freddy Shepherd was running the club.

It seems Newcastle fans may still have to wait a few days for the Ireland deal to go through, but this lads is such a good player – we hope the deal gets done.

Who do you think the other player(s) are who Newcastle want to bring in?

Comments always welcome.

just give up on him already, personally i dont care if we sign this guy or not. All the worry seems to be on salary at the moment and we dont need that.

Just focus on the transfer market! so many things are happening and the more we stall on Ireland the more we seem to be missing out on actual deals happening.

dont want ireland i want a pacey striker and a right winger i still believe we should have kept routledge til a replacement was found he has tremendous pace he might have a few chinks in his game but isnt it up to the manager to correct that. i think swp would be good although hes a bit small i do like players to be physical.

If The Lad wanted to get His Career back on Track he would come for half his wages – We don’t want someone who thinks money first Football Second sod the club . We have had to many of them before. Just don’t know why we got shot of Routledge when we have all the talk about lack of bodies and cant get players in !!!!!!! or was it he missed London to Badly ??

Ireland could be class for us… be patient and the right deal for all parties will present itself.

Rushing around just getting anyone in who’ll come / buying for the sake of saying “we bought someone” is what got us here in the first place.

Yea we Need a New Centre Forward To Help Andy out Before we Get Ireland . But with so little time left I cant see anything Happening until the summer now. The team we have will Keep us up but in about 10th place Probably. Were was Keane on Saturday ?? was he injured ?? Why havn’t we gone for him with all the talk early on ?? if we can pay Ireland why not Keane ??

We can’t dictate his wages while he’s on loan, we can only negotiate the percentage we’ll pay with Villa.

The attitude won’t be a problem. If he wants first team football, he stands to gain nothing by behaving like a dick.

He’s a good player and could be massive for us, if he gets his head down and recaptures the form that made him such a hot property a couple of years ago.

If the hold up is to do with wage percentage between clubs, isn’t it likely that we’ve already discussed a permanent move at the end of the season? If that’s the case, and the player’s happy for the move to be made permanent, he must be happy with what we’ve offered.

That is, of course, if the only sticking point is the wage percentage for the loan period.

If he’s such a good player Ed how come Villa, like City before them, want shot of him ?

I reckon Ireland would be a steal if we could get him on a loan to buy, nee doubt in my mind. Will take a few games to build up the olde confidence and fitness. He’s only 24 and i have full confidence that he can return to the form he had 2 years ago.

Agree with “Traceline” that panic buying basically got us in the mess in the first place and now we’re finally almost rid of all the deadwood, long may it continue. Some deals are worth waiting for!!

Ireland would be an amazing signing if the team spirit in our squad rubs off on him and he regains his form.

He’s the perfect age to sign a midfield player.

@Andy Mac – he got forced out of City for big bucks players, you can’t buy big time charlies and not play them… Villa want him out cos Houllier don’t like him.

    Simple as that like…

I find myself being dragged into the whole Ireland debate…..

    Tiote
    Ben Arfa
    Gosling
    Joey Barton
    Nolan
    Vukcic
    (Guthrie)
    (Smith)
8 Yes 8 Central midfielders……Ive even put smith and guthrie in brackets incase the ireland lovers dont class these 2 as CM!!

NOW……WHO WILL IRELAND REPLACE!! I havent had one clear answer other than he is good cover…..at 70k a wk, 50 k a week, even 35k a week…..do we need him FFS¬!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO

Winger and striker or winger/striker and left back ta!!

Not quite that simple sparky. Houllier told the player to work harder at his game but then decided to let him go ? Maybe there’s the reason ?

@ Angryman – I would play 5 in midfield and drop a Striker, play Carroll up front on his lonesome. Ideal midfield would consist of:

    Barton
    Nolan
    Ben Arfa
    Ireland
    Tiote

Drop Jonas as my Cat can cross better than him, never any end product.

Guthrie never has been and never will be good enough, Vuckic doesn’t get a sniff of the first team anyway so in my eyes he should be out on loan anyway. Smith is kenk, should be offloaded asap. Gosling can come in for the inevitable suspensions picked up by midfield.

That answer ya question sunny jim??

Back four is excellent (although a good back up for Jose would be welcome).
Midfield does its job well and with Ben Arfa coming back can only improve further.
Problems are up front – we urgently need a decent striker to help Carroll. Four points have gone missing in the last two games because of good chances going begging.
We can probably manage until the summer with what we’ve got but someone with some pace and an eye for goal would be a boon. Someone like Vela or Sturridge would probably do nicely for now.
The summer window is going to be the time when we really need those better players to significantly improve the quality of the squad as well as get rid of some of the deadwood – Xisco, Perch, Smith, Campbell etc.

I’m not even sure this is a relevant discussion anymore since I can see the whole thing collapsing due to wage demands. I still maintain that Steven Ireland would be a brilliant purchase on loan although I’d agree also that other areas of the squad could do with strength before i.e left back cover. There was a rumour this morning that Pardew was looking at Konchesky as cover for Enrique but I’m hoping thats rubbish.

    Sunny Jim?? Mmmm
So you would have one up front then!! Okay….

That system works very well for all the top four premier teams doesnt it?

I mean arsenil dont play with 2 up top
Manure dont play with 2 up top
Tottenham dont play with 2 up top
Mancity dont play with 2 up top

Liverpool play with Torres and Gerard just off, they are doing really well at the minute and they are 2 class players!!

Give me a break SUNNY BOYYY, we have one of the best headers of the ball in the league and you would play without a winger on the pitch?

Oh well, would love to see that work…

…However might i add that Barton is not a winger and Jonas, who is a winger, can’t cross for toffee so where’s these lethal wingers whippin the balls in for Carroll that you talk about?? If you continue to play Barton down the right and Ben Arfa coming from the left (as they would with the suggested 5 man midfield i had before) i dare say you’ll get more service to Carroll, aeriel and more…

Name me any other side in the BPL that consistently i.e. every match plays their right footed midfielder on the left ?

Jonas is a good player and he’d be even better if he got a start on the right. Maybe when HBA is back we could try that novel idea Mr Pardwho ?
