Alan Pardew has talked about the transfer window today, from Newcastle’s base out in Portugal, and he says the deals will probably go through in the last day or two of this transfer window.
Alan Pardew – we want two players in
One of the things Newcastle have been great at, over the last 18 months, is getting some great deals done.
Mike Williamson for £1M, Dan Gosling for nothing, Tiote for around £3.5M, and Ben Arfa for around £5M are great buys for the Newcastle club.
Mike Ashley has also insisted that when Newcastle buy a player, the total fee is paid up front and not spread over a number of years as a capital expense, which was done when Freddy Shepherd was Chairman.
That’s a much better way to do things because when Ashley arrived, Newcastle were still paying out money for players signed years previously and some had even already left the club.
And it seems that Newcastle now want two players in – but their best deal will probably be done when push comes to shove in the last day or two of the January window.
Pardew confirmed this morning that the Magpies are still hoping to bring in two players before Monday’s deadline :
“We are still just looking at making offers and making calls,” “There will be some activity probably in the last few days of the window and I hope we will be part of that.”
“As much as we want a player – and we actually want two with Wayne Routledge going – it has to be right. We will not rush into anything.”
“That is the most important thing, and we are still looking at our squad as well.”
“Andy Carroll hopefully won’t be too long and Cheick Tiote will be coming back soon so that will give us a big boost.”
It’s perfectly fine to wait until near the end of the window to get a better deal, and it seems that Villa’s Stephen Ireland is still in the frame and who the other player may be – we have no idea.
It’s unlikely to be Sebastian Larsson, but this player may be a target for Newcastle this summer.
Exactly what is really happening with Seb is hard to fathom, since his agent said last Saturday that Newcastle were still negotiating with the player last Wednesday, until Birmingham said he was no longer for sale in January.
But the Blackburn manager Steve Kean also said a few days back on Sky Sports, that they had agreed a fee with Birmingham for the player before the plug was pulled, so which club is leading the chase, we really don’t know.
So unless Seb signs a new contract at Birmingham, which has to be unlikely, the 25 year-old will be a free agent in the summer.
Seb Larsson for nothing would be a good deal to start off the summer transfer window for Newcastle.

Comment #42Pardew has played the delay and distract game very well on behalf of Ashley. I don’t think we have any real intent on signing anyone other than HBA.
We’ve wasted about 26 days during this window.
I hope I’m wrong.

Comment #43Maybe Pardew brought the team out to Portugal so he could get a good look at some of the players out there. WHO KNOWS? or maybe he’s just simply a getting the heat into players and doing defensive roles with them. Ireland would be decent but I still believe that we could do better than a player who is unwanted by a club in the bottom half and struggling. Juan Albin from Getafe might just be available.

Comment #44There must be a right winger coming in or why let Routledge leave? Surely Joey needs to play in the middle. He’s a great playmaker but has no pace. No cover for Jose could be a disaster also. He must know that since trying Perch. We have Ferguson but too young and a bit light weight, better on left wing with an actual left foot. Surely eventually a striker is required. Shola looked lost again against Spurs. Ranger looks to challenge for a place now but not enough. Van Anholt has gone to Leicester so he is not available for left back cover either.

Comment #48People that say Ireland is shit and is not wanted here need a smack! What are you guys talking about!?? You guys have really bad memories. Ireland was the top dog in the EPL a year or so ago. Form is temporary and class is permanent. I would be over the moon if we got Ireland here. If it’s a loan move with option to buy as being mentioned then even better. If he was crap against us while at Villa it’s because he has lost all hope of resurrecting his Aston Villa career as Houllier has obviously made him realize he’s not part of his plans (also Villa have some great players already ie. Young). That I believe is no fault of his own and must be like a kick in the teeth. Some managers fancy a player and some don’t it’s as simple as that. Remember Ruud Gullit leaving Shearer out of the match against Sunderland? That doesn’t mean Shearer is shite by any means. We have just been promoted and we can’t expect too much in a season that we’re overachieving. Newcastle has made some shrewd buys these past years like Ed mentioned above and I have faith in the board to back us up when needed. I think more effort to sign players will be done during the summer. Some of the players we’re linked with are very good and Ireland would be great for this window and would get back to his best form just like Barton has.

Comment #49Oh and before some smart ass mentions it his attitude should not be an issue as we have worse reputations already in the dressing room. Barton, Carroll, Ben Arfa etc. If he has an attitude it’s probably because he’s upset at not playing regularly. Another thing we do need him even if he is more of a CM. I know wingers should be our priority but Barton is playing there and we need cover in Barton’s usual CM role then. Smith ain’t good enough, Routledge has gone, Tiote is suspended every now and again, Gosling is still recovering from a serious knee injury, Guthrie is alright but still learning and Vuckic hasn’t set the world alight yet and you can’t rely on a kid to play in one of the toughest leagues in the world and expect him play admirably every game to save us from the drop. Ireland is a midfielder so he’ll be a great acquisition and just the cover we need.
What we should do is act fast before someone else comes in for him!

Comment #50A few months back we were all crying out for a good proven creative midfielder. Now that a very good one has come up many don’t want him!? WTF!!?? No wonder many people brand us as delusional!

I personally think the most important positions for us to cover are LB and RW, in that order, but I’d be chuffed if we got Ireland. He’s a world class attacking midfielder, and Houllier is being a total plank by not playing him and allowing him to go.
People forget the blinding form Ireland hit in the 2 seasons before he went to Villa. Injury ruled him out for a fair chunk almost immediately on leaving Citeh, and he ain’t hardly been selected since coming back to fitness.
Yeah he likes pink wheel trims on Range Rovers, and might be a bit of a jack the lad, but he’s a 24 year old Premiership footballer FFS.
I was one of the Barton backers on here when every fan and his dog were saying “sack him” and he’s sh1t. Look at him now! I honestly believe Ireland would be a proper steal for us if we could get him on board now, while he’s off most clubs’ radars. I know CM is probably the area we least need to concentrate on, but having 3 quality playmakers like Ireland, Barton and Ben Arfa would fill the void we’ve had in that area since the early days of Kieron Dyer.
Sign Ireland on loan with a view to buy at the end of the season. I’m sure he won’t disappoint.
