Chelsea Interested In Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote

10:19 am, Sunday, January 30th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

It’s a sign of the times that Newcastle players are again attracting interest from some of the top clubs.

And in the Sunday Sun today,  there is a report that Newcastle may find it hard to hang onto their Ivory Coast International Cheick Tiote, because Chelsea are registering a serious interest in the player, and have had him watched continuously.

There are three, and maybe four players at Newcastle who are due to get new contracts soon  – Joey Barton, Jose Enrique, Cheick Tiote, and we also think Andy Carroll will receive a new improved deal from Newcastle.

That’s because any player who is valued at £25M by other clubs deserves to be making even more than the £25K/week Andy got in his last contract, that was signed just a couple of months ago.

Andy continues to look the real deal on Tyneside.

The 24 year-old Ivory Coast midfielder Tiote was brought in from FC Twente last August, and has proved to be a stunning signing by the Newcastle United club for around £3.5M.

But Cheick was delighted to arrive on Tyneside, and so far he’s far played 18 times for the Magpies, with 16 of those in the Premier League.

And he has been quickly embraced by Newcastle’s legendary fans, and of course once we heard he sends money back to his sisters and brothers still in the Ivory Coast,  he also captured the hearts of many of us.

Cheick had a tremendous game against Chelsea in the 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park last year,  and of course after the game his famous Ivory Coast team-mate Didier Drogba waxed lyrical about the player, and apparently Chelsea management were extremely impressed with him in that game.

If Cheick keeps up his good form – he is due back from his three match suspension next Saturday for being sent off in the game at Stevenage  when the Magpies are at home to Arsenal -  he could attract a big fee from Chelsea, and Newcastle will need to be braced for that.

As we said earlier, it’s a sign of the times at Newcastle,  that many of  our top players are being watched by top clubs, but Newcastle need to become a top team again themselves, and as far as this season  goes, so far so good.

With a good run of results over the last 15 league games, Newcastle could even finish in a  decent position in the Premier League.

And that will certainly help the Magpies retain some of their top players, and they include a certain Cheick Tiote.

Comments welcome.

Please no. If reports are right Graham Carr found us a superstar for 3.5m. I’d rather lose anyone (except maybe AC) over ‘The Tank’!

@nufcgaz687 and all the other 1st posters …

    Dear commenter,
Firstly, may I congratulate you on being first. I found your one-word adjunct spellbinding to the point I almost wept with joy upon assimilating its perfectly formed reasoning. I now feel equipped to tackle world hunger.
Unassuming in stature, yet insightful in tone, your voice has inspired me to reply with an equally visceral torrent that I hope will instil open-mouthed disbelief, akin to those who witness the breakfast at Little Chef.
Contrary to popular opinion, being first to post on a blog is indeed the primary sign of unflappable eminence. It is the cornerstone of cool and I pray your literary genius will reap rewards when the lights go out.
Knowing such skill exists in this sometimes callous world is a beacon to us all. I had no idea that the words of Noël Coward would one day pale into insignificance in your mighty shadow. The (digital) pen truly is mightier than the sword.
Your linguistic ability is unsurpassed and on a quantum level that will baffle etymologists for decades. In fact, just this morning the human genome project called and wish you to contribute to their research.
Of primary note is the way you weaved such significance into such a compact form without compromising the integrity of your message. Even my pet snake, Kevin, shed a tear.
Undoubtedly though, I think you’ll find that — as originator of this article — I was first to write on the page. That fact is both unequivocal and demonstrable. While commenting first is big and most certainly clever, I trust next time you consider textual ejaculation on someone’s carefully crafted web site that you do so from beneath the space shuttle launch pad at T-10 seconds.

i agree with you there they think they can leave the hard work of finding the good players to the clubs below them then buy them when they see how they perform in the prem charlie adam for one well done ian Holloway for standing by guns and not giving in cause if bent is worth 24 mil then adam is worth at least 15mil

I don’t often comment, more of a silent witness to the sometimes entertaining, often childish banter on this site – however I had to dig out my long-forgotten user name and password to tell you that your post was the most entertaining i’ve read in months. I doubt anyone could have put it more eloquently.

geoff777 your a legend. Geordie gerrad na its only a loan move mate :(

  • 17 Solaidback // Jan 30, 2011 at 11:02 AM

Well my way of thinking is, if we’re not going to sell Carroll for £25m, then I don’t think Ashley will sell Tiote for £15m either, as he’s still got 3 1/2 years on his contract & remember, a player can refuse to leave a club but a club can also refuse to sell a player….

The reason the top 4 clubs are the top 4 clubs is because they are able to persuede players from other clubs to play for them, but all it tales is for an owner like Ashley who isn’t dependant on money, not to sell his best players to the top 4 clubs, for his club to become a top 4 club.. :) :)

So instead of lambasting Ashley with every stroke of your pen or keyboard, why not get behind him & hope that all he’s trying to do for our club is to build it up, keep our top players & move up the table back to where we use to be, a top 4 club… ;) ;)

I reiterate we MUST retain our best players! The fact that other clubs are on scouting missions at our games proves that we have made a impact in the PL.
    HAWAY the LADS!

I’ve heard tiote wax lyrical about essien, drogba and he models his play and looks up to essien. Much I would hate to see it think he would defo go to Chelsea if he had the chance

  • 28 cupiddstunt // Jan 30, 2011 at 3:48 PM

Now why is it there are loads of folks comming on this site saying why we should be looking to get this player and that player, but appear to be objecting when it is our players that are the centre of transfer speculation?

Be happy that we have so many players that are desired by other clubs.

Keep your fingers crossed we keep them.

Hope we can poach some other clubs players and improve the team a little bit by little bit.

    Things are looking up……………HWTL

    2 words for Chelsea…

    KISS ASS!

  • 31 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 31, 2011 at 8:32 AM

For as long as i can remember, we all get the piss taken out of us on forums on here with reference to be deluded etc, etc!!! Why all the intersest in our players then?

Every tranfer window goes open, however with speculation about so called bigger clubs wanting to buy/loan our best players! All this speculation should be ignored, and treated with the contempt it deserves!
A clear message should be given to the likes of Liverpool, Totenham, Chelsea and also ManU! None of our players are for sale! Unless we say so, NUFC is in the process of building a team for the future, i will be pleased when the window slams shut and we can just get back to playing.

    Agree with you baro!
Bog off Chelski, Spuds, The Pool and ManU!
