Newcastle’s acquisition of Xisco for £5.7M from Deportivo in September of 2008, must be one of the worst buys in Newcastle United history.
Xisco – on his bike – and back to Spain at least for this season
And that’s saying something, because the same club sold us a certain left winger called Albert Luque, who cost Newcastle over £9M, and was another flop at the Tyneside club.
Sky News is reporting that Xisco is being strongly linked with a return to Spain, and to his former club Deportivo La Coruna.
The striker, who was signed by Dennis Wise and led to the departure of Kevin Keegan from the club, and which ultimately led to Newcastle being relegated that season, made only 11 appearances for Newcastle, and scored one goal in his very first game against Hull City.
Of course, it was hardly the 24 year-old’s fault that Newcastle paid way over the odds for the player – and also that his wages are rumored to be around £50K/week.
But, unfortunately for Newcastle, it may be only another loan deal.
Xisco was on loan last season at Racing Santandar, and the lad may well stay at the Tyneside club, and see his contract out though the summer of 2013, which of course he has every legal right to do just that.
But if he does, another one of our Spanish players, who quickly comes to mind, and did the exact same thing is Marcelino.
Sky Sports says the former Spanish U21 International is on his way to Spain right now to undergo a medical, allowing the final details of the loan move to be put in place.
Newcastle will also negotiate a transfer price, in case Deportivo want to take him permanently in the summer.
While his deal may not be as bad as the one we made to bring Michael Owen to Tyneside, if Xisco stays at the Newcastle club and sees out his contract, he will have cost Newcastle just over £18M over the five years – and that’s for 11 appearances and one goal.
Hey – maybe it will be worse than Michael Owen’s deal. 😀
Let’s hope Newcastle don’t make any more of these ridiculous buys, which will also stand with Jean-Alain Boumsong, Marcelino and Albert Luque – as some of Newcastle’s worst ever deals in the transfer market.
