Why Are Newcastle After Kieren Westwood?

The news over the last few days, which we’ve ignored so far, because it didn’t seem to make much sense,  is that Newcastle have launched a bid for Coventry goalkeeper Kieren Westwood.

Kieren Westwood – 26 year-old Coventry goalkeeper

As you may have guessed,  Kieren is out of contract in the summer, and the news today is that the Tyneside club is willing to pay £500K for the player, and it will be a case of take it or leave it – as far as Coventry are concerned.

With two young goalkeepers already at Newcastle in Tim Krul and Fraser Forster, you have to wonder why Newcastle are making this bid, but we  think that if Kieren comes in,  then one of the two 22 year-old goalkeepers  will be moved out in the summer, and probably Tim Krul.

The news in the Sunday Mirror is that the Sky Blues want £2M for Westwood, but there’s no way a club will pay that in January,  when the lad will be available for nothing in the summer.

But it seems that if Newcastle cannot get Kieren in January,  they will go after the former Carlisle United goalkeeper in the summer, and as we said we have to think one of either Tim or Fraser will then be moved out.

The 26 year-old 6’2″ goalkeeper is highly regarded, and started his career at Manchester City, and he moved to Carlisle in 2004, before moving to Coventry in 2008.

He played 131 times at Carlisle, has played 116 times at Coventry and has 5 full Ireland caps.

Next season it has to be a choice between Krul and Forster. Both are young hungry keepers and from what they’ve said not happy to play second fiddle, so we sell Tim (make some money), Forster becomes number 1, Harps 2 with this kid 3rd behind Harps till he retires.

    its obvious to my why
1- harps aint got long left
2- no way we can keep forster n krul happy one will leave
3- westwood has over 250 games way more experience than krul or forster

cos pardew’s on a one man mission to destroy krul’s confidence. Disgraceful.

I have to say that this is the right idea by our fat controller.
Buy young prospects and westwood fits right into this bracket.
I would rather buy players like this who will develope with the squad.
I think maybe forster will be sold to Celtic!!
Harpers age will catch up with him and Krul will need some excellent quality back up, if not be back up to excellent quality??

It would make sense with the long term vision of the Fat Controller, if he sticks to his word!!

Get a good, youngish goalkeeper in a at a small price and make money by selling one of the two high profile understudies.
    It’s not rocket science.
Either Krul or Forster (or both) are going to want the security of permanent first team football anyway next season as I can’t see them both being happy to stay on the bench indefinitely or be farmed out again.

    Its purely business.

If you can pick up a player for next to nothing which other clubs are waiting until the summer to get hold of, then you are most likely to make a profit on that player.

Westwood is a good keeper, we have been linked with him in the past, as have many clubs, but for £500k, you cant complain.

I also think that Forster will be staying at Celtic, most loan deals now adays have a final sell on fee agreed by the clubs, so I think that Fraser may have already secured his place at Celtic.

I expect forster will be staying @ celtic, either that or his waltzing back in to be given the #1 shirt will sound the end of krul (and even possibly harps) – either way we’re going to be -1 keeper next season

maybe this is a sign, for once, that we’re forward thinking rather than being all reactive and scrambling for solutions to self inflicted problems.

    here’s hoping eh?

Prefer what we have, but one of our two younger ‘keepers is going to want to leave, rather than play second fiddle.

Not sure about Krul. He has lots of talent as a shot stopper, but his distribution is poor. That needs to be addressed before he can be considered as number 1.

The key to all this is Harps. He’s not retiring and he is no 1. Therefore we either sell or loan our prospects and get in a bench warmer. Westwood will be happy to bench warm for Harps as he’ll get more dosh; Krul gets sold; FF stays out on loan getting experience then comes back when Harps becomes goalkeeping coach. Simples!
