The Daily Express is reporting this morning that Newcastle United have tried to sign French International and former Arsenal player, Thierry Henry on a short term deal.
Thierry Henry – while at Barcelona
Thierry is now at the NY Red Bulls, and has been training with Arsenal getting ready for the MLS season that begins in a couple of months.
Apparently Newcastle approached Henry’s agent Darren Dein, to see if a temporary deal could be arranged.
It would be a loan deal, but of course Thierry is not half the player he once was, but there again he can still put the ball in the back of the net, which is a player Newcastle now need desperately.
We don’t think this deal can be pulled off, because it’s just too close to the Red Bulls starting their pre-season.
A Newcastle source told the Daily Express:
“We had a real attempt to get Henry, but the start of the MLS season worked against us.”
“Carroll’s eleventh-hour departure prevented us getting a regular signing to replace him.”
“But we would like to find a quality replacement, given that we have to look at players outside regular club contracts.”
Newcastle were reported to be prepared to pay Henry a six-figure weekly wage to accept a short-term contract.
It also turns out that Newcastle tried to make a deal with Liverpool forward Milan Jovanovic as a makeweight in the huge Carroll deal. But it’;s not clear whether Newcastle didn’t want to do that deal or whether it was Liverpool.
Maybe Liverpool valued Jovanovic at a ridiculously high value, because he’s been a big flop on Merseyside since signing as a free agent on a three year deal last summer.
But for whatever reason that didn’t happen, and now Alan Pardew will look for some free agent(s) to sign – but there doesn’t seem to be too much class available out there right now.
Wonder how many calls from agents Newcastle have received in the last few days?
And is Alan Shearer fit right now? Just kidding. 😀
