News in the Sunday Sun today, that Newcastle will go after highly-rated Ivory Coast forward Gervinho in the summer.
Gervinho – Lille forward – can play as striker or winger
Newcastle fans are coming to terms with losing Andy Carroll, but the Tyneside lad blotted his copy book a little, and will never now be a Newcastle legend – but that was his choice and the Newcastle club has to move on.
And as Alan Pardew has said today he only wants players who want to play for Newcastle United – and that’s always the way it should be – and that’s how you get amazing feats like the one we witnessed yesterday – talk about guts and glory!
We’re not sure if it’s good news that we are hearing about the Ivory Coast International now, we’d be a lot happier if Newcastle had quietly negotiated a deal, and they don’t need to wait for the summer to try to get a deal struck.
The forward, who is very quick, is said to be rated at £8M, and is one of France’s top prospects after a first season that saw him score 13 goals in 32 games.
But Arsenal are also fans of the player, and a year ago he said it would be a dream move to the London club, so we don’t know if Wenger is still interested in this 5′ 11″ tall player.
We suspect they may not be after signing Marouane Chamakh lsast summer as a free agent.
Gervinho will know Cheick Tiote well, and he has already played 19 times with 5 goals for the Ivory Coast.
The player turns 24 in May, and started his career at Belgium club Bevern in 2005, and moved to French club Le Mans in 2007, before joining Lille in 2009.
He has played 40 times for Lille with 17 goals, and in 160 first class appearances he has notched 40 goals
Gervinho can either play on the wing or up front as a striker, and his contract runs out in 18 months, so Newcastle may be able to get a decent deal on the player, and of course it should help that Cheick Tiote is at Newcastle, and doing just great.
Gervinho was captain for the Ivory Coast Olympic team in 2008.
From what we can tell, this lad looks a very good player, and speed is something the team needs more of.
The lad seems exactly what Newcastle need, somebody who can get a lot better at Newcastle, just like Tiote has, and has exploded onto the Premier League scene in dramatic style.
Back in November Tiote had recommended two Ivory Coast players that would be good at Newcastle – and one of them was Gervinho – the other one being Seydou Doumbia.

Comment #5Why dont we do the deal now instead of waiting till the window opens, price goes crazy and every one is after the same players. As a selling club I can understand, but the buying club should be getting the deal progressed ready.
OOOH I forgot we have teh slug in charge and he is after freebies and last minute stop gaps

Comment #6Both Gervinho and Seydou Doumbia would be great, we need to keep Tiote at St. James’. If we signed a couple of Ivorians…especially these 2 then next season could be very exciting!

Comment #8Hulk is never coming to us, even if we paid the 20mil + fee his wages wil be 120 grand per week, and wilnot fit into cashleys grand plan of paying low wages for lower tier players so he can recoup some cash while getting back at the fans for slating him.
Oh and still having the club in the prem so making it a saleable asset.

Two points. Just as niafron mentioned Gervinho is a “confidence” player. Happy on both the ground and in the air. Plus as was said earlier it could play a major part in keeping Tiote at SJP bearing in mind he’s on the radar even more after that sensational strike yeaterday. If you havent seen Gervinho play try watching a few Championaat matches on TV . Here’s a YT clip for now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWRxbU_lvQs&feature=related
Second point is that Hulk has a buyout clause in his contract apparently set at 100m euros, so I dont see it happening anytime while the Fatman reigns !!!

Comment #14Actually there’s a chance to watch him today (if he’s in the side ?) http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=103766&part=sports
Lille are at Auxerre today. Maybe niafron knows if he’s likely to play today or if he’s injured ?

Comment #17Great signing but we would still need a big man to play alongside him, Hulk/Romelo Lukaku being idealistic?

We also need a new goalie. FC Copenhagens Wiland would be great.

Comment #21If playing as a striker, not the most productive, but O`K if combined as a winger. (Gervinho)
Watched Kranjcar at Spurs, good player, would be a great addition to the side.

Comment #22Gervinho is brilliant and will be a good lift for Tiote, wasn’t Sylvain Marvauex supposed to sign a pre-contract, I haven’t heard anything from him!

JW maybe this is the ideal time to get away from Big Man upfront ? We’ve played with that sort of 4-4-2 formation for years now including the Shearer period and apart from the highlights (Cup Finals, European experiences, Makem thrashings 🙂 we’ve won nowt.
Maybe we should think about flexible formats for flexible players so that when a key player (No. 9) is injured or SOLD then we simply move another player into the jigsaw and carry on. HBA and Gervinho fall into that category as would Turan, Hamsik and Lavezzi etc etc
As far as I can recall Barca have managed to resist the temptation to lump it up to a big man and havent been doing too badly of late.

Comment #24One thing we can be assured of is Ashley will not spring for any striker that doe`nt tick all the boxes.
That includes, age and price, as we are a selling club and do not spend on the finished product.
He has informed Pardew that every squad member has a price tag .
It`s another form of retailing instead of shirts it`s also humans, actually football players.
The thing is , like Carroll, most are ok with it.
It simply means they will end up at a bigger club, which includes, more money.
It also means dont look for any silverware as long as this guy owns the club, too bad really.
