Newcastle Maintaining Their Interest In Wolves’ Playmaker

3:19 pm, Monday, February 7th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 47 Comments

Looking back at our records,  Newcastle have been linked with Wolves central midfielder David Jones since early last summer.

David Jones – Wolves central midfielder

And news today that Bolton Wanderers may also be interested in getting the midfielder, whose contract runs out at Wolves in the summer.

Southport-born Jones is a good player, and is a particularly good passer of the ball, and of course, for no transfer fee he could be a good buy for Newcastle in the summer.

But David hasn’t played too much for Wolves this season, having appeared just 15 times with a single goal, and he wasn’t even in the Wolves squad on Saturday, but we’re not sure if he’s out injured at the moment.

Jones told the Express & Star today:

“I’ve played for Mick McCarthy for three years and you never know what might happen in the future,”

“There’s still a chance of me staying, but the main priority for the club is staying in the Premier League and we’ll see where we are at the end of the season.”

“I haven’t really thought much about it but I just want to play as much as I can and see what happens in the summer. Maybe we’ll talk then because it can always get sorted out.”

“It’s not as if anything is ‘off the table’ at the moment, but from my point of view and everyone else at the club, we’re just trying to stay in the Premier League.”

David is very non committal there, but he seems to want to see where Wolves end up at the end of the season first.

And of course they had a terrific win against Manchester United over the weekend to end the Red Devil’s unbeaten season, and they deserved the win too.

The former Derby County player, who started his career at Manchester United,  has played over 50 times for Wolves with 5 goals.

The doubt we have about David is whether he’s good enough for Newcastle, but when we’ve seen him play for Wolves, he’s looked a very good player.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

World Cup winner Villa also said Andy Carroll, who Liverpool signed to replace Torres in a £35million deal, was “worth every penny”.

Villa, who cost Barca around £34.2 million when he joined them from Valencia last summer, added: “Each year there are big transfers of this type. It’s normal. All teams need to strengthen when they want to win things.

“Liverpool needed to reinforce after the sale of Fernando. They (Carroll and fellow new recruit Luis Suarez) are two great players who are worth every penny. I’m sure they’ll be a hit with the fans.”

Can we stop mentioning AC, whatever happens with him is nothing to do with us anymore.

Only link he has with newcastle now is that 7.5% of his next transfer we’re getting.

  • 3 gorskino10 // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:29 PM

Why he isnt that good and the only good players at Wolves are Nenad or Jarvis, Jones is below average but then again does seem the type Pardew wud buy “Average”

  • 4 Bucks mag // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:32 PM

Don’t think we need Jones – don’t rate and we’ve plenty of CMs already.

Considering Carroll is out possibly for the rest of this season, that’s almost half a year of his wages down the drain from Liverpool. Hope they don’t get CL next season – they’ll probs go on a spending spree anyway this summer but surely they’ll miss the revenues.

Wouldn’t say I hate anyone club but Liverpool fans really annoy me, always complaining about no money and no trophies… try supporting NUFC!

  • 5 Stuart // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:33 PM

How do you know the type Pardew would buy for us? He hasnt signed anyone yet.

Don’t know why some people flat refuse to support Pardew.

The results have mostly went his way and he’s been honest and not afraid to own up when he makes a mistake so far.

  • 6 Markaccus // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:42 PM

Haven’t seen any interest anywhere for jones lately. Can’t see a use for him, unless manure buy tiote then he will be his replacement (yeah right) lol

  • 7 lewman // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:45 PM

forskin’o what about kevin doyle, i would say he is a good player who plays for wolves

  • 8 lewman // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:49 PM

anyway a player for free who can add to the squad and potentially help us put a better cup run together so we dont have to only play kids would be good. i am not saying we shouldnt play any kids but we need a bit of experience in the middle for such games and smith looks like he could do with a walking stick when ever he plays.

  • 9 The Entertainers // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:50 PM

I believe we do need a central midfielder in the summer because for me’ Smith and Guthrie need to be moved on. Guthrie is a shame because he’s young and has quality but fails time and time again to be consistent. He’s either good or competely ineffectual ! More the later unfortunately.
As for Jones is he better than smith or Guthrie I’m not sure, prehaps more consistent, but I think we can do better!

  • 10 lewman // Feb 7, 2011 at 3:59 PM

guthrie has been ok apart from his first two games back entertainers. i think many have a very negative view of him because of his atrocious mistakes he made in the couple of games about a month ago. its the same with best, some can see he has potential while others say he has played crap when he plays well.

guthrie and best may not be good enough for real madrid or barca but they are more than capable squad players for us and they should be developed so we can one day make a nice profit from them in a couple of years time.

wiki site saying we have signed ewerthon until end of season, squad num 45.

  • 12 geordieforeva // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:03 PM

2nd rete player. I think we should think like a big club. c’mon weve got 35 million.

  • 13 GeordieGerman // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:06 PM

Hopefully once we have 40 plus points we will start to get some pre-contracts signed and not from other clubs “leftovers”.

You lads read the Bartoon interview in the Gazette?

    http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/black-white/why_i_m_staying_in_toon_joey_barton_1_3051417

  • 17 dave 1961 // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:14 PM

we need more Cheick Tiote’s there more out there, managers are no good at buying players as just managing a premier league is more than most can handle, we have first hand proof that Graham Carr can deliver, this was done without anyone else becoming aware, I would guess he’s a watched man now, and if we get 2 o3 signing each window we would become a force, and when they age Ashley can sell and get his cash. I don’t want to belittle the player but he’s not the standard to get us to where we want to be, and when they don’t make it. It’s a waste of money.

  • 18 Al-ToOn // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:15 PM

Nothing better than what we have got. If we need another midfielder then it needs to be a creative players e.g. Ben Arfa or a tank like Tiote, Jones in niether!

  • 19 steve1980 // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:17 PM

    In the summer…

Keisuke Honda – fantastic player, 2nd striker, creative midfielder, winger, the lot. At CSKA Moscow, has two more years on his contract, attracking a lot of interest, anything less that £12m would be a non starter, but if they’re serious…

Yoann Gourcuff – fab player, at Lyon, attacking midfielder, playmaker, makes and scores goals, again though he’s highly rated, £15-18m.

Ezequiel Lavezzi – slightly more off the radar but the lads pure class, didnt make the Argie WC squad, not happy at Napoli by all accounts, he’s only 25 as well, with Jonas and Fab at our place, he may be interested, £7-9m.

And of course, some decent free transfers will be knocking about come the summer – Larsson, Elmander etc. And as far as British lads go, lets have a go for James McCarthy from Wigan or Kris Boyd from Boro. McCarthy has loads of promise, and yes i know Boyd aint done well since his move, but the lads an out and out goal scorer, he’s just in a rubbish team

  • 20 AndyMac // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:18 PM

Cannot help but think this term “playmaker” gets used out of context on so many occasions. Ireland was alleged to have been a playmaker and now Jones ?

There is a world of difference between a central midfielder and a playmaker. Charlie Adam would fit the bill along with Fabregas, Messi, Ozil or even Honda the little Japanese player with the great engine :)

  • 21 gorskino10 // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:19 PM

    @lewman i mean Jewman

Yeah forgot about Doyle but back to Jones he is average and not better than our current players like Barton/Nolan etc… no point we need players who are better not worse!

  • 22 dougski // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:22 PM

    @gorskino10

yeh just average buys like benayoun tevez and mascherano he bought? really average they are god really hope we dont buy any players that average jesus would make guthrie and smith looks world class then wouldnt they! proper donkey get behind your team and your manager for godsake!

  • 23 lewman // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:25 PM

wow sorry gorskino the f is right next to the g, an actual mistake on my part however bad it may look

  • 24 Stuart // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:26 PM

    Well said dougski!

  • 25 Al-ToOn // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:26 PM

When we spend our £35m + we need to really go for it. We are not far of having a top six team so all we need is 2 great strikers and a couple of desent players to bulk up the squad.

Radamel Falcao would be ideal, 33 goals in 42 games for Porto, around £15-20m? Also Thomas Müller would be brilliant, hes still 21 and won golden boot at WC. £18m?

  • 26 howay man // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:32 PM

    Elmander–0
    Larsson—-0
    Jones——-0
    Lukaku—-15
    Zárate—–15

  • 27 NorseMag // Feb 7, 2011 at 4:39 PM

Plenty of links and suggestions for attacking players here.

Any good ideas for defensive players as I think we’ll need cover for jose, one more central back as kadar and willo might not cut it, a right back to give simpson competition, and a ballwinning def mid cover for cheick.

Attacking midfielders is the only think we don’t need.

    Taken from Wiki
    re: Ewerthon
Ewerthon has now signed for Newcastle United FC having been given the vacant “no 9″ shirt left by Andy Carroll. He has agreed a transfer until the end of the league on £30k per week with bonuses related to goals and the number of pies and newcastle brown ales drunk. Alan Pardew was quoted “This is an exciting signing for the Toon and although I have had to pay half of the wages out of my own pocket due to the tight owner Mike Ashley I am hoping he will give me some discount on some replica kits for hit and some new boots!”

No surprise there, if it was Barton he would have received a 10 match ban and £500k fine, but as its a young “squeky clean” english player with a bright future no action will be taken…

  • 32 ToonMobile // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:11 PM

Remember that £35million is for player transfer cost AND wages – that will get you one superstar player of around £15million + his wages at the top end of our wage ceiling over 5 years…and that’s it. Or more likely 3 average players under the wage ceiling. That £35million will not go far! Work out the cost + wages and you will see…

    From wiki:
It has recently been revealed that Ewerthon is the secret love child from golem of lord of the rings and Margaret Thatcher .

  • 36 daneevz // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:29 PM

hot targets i think could be
    1.Toni Kroos,Winger (B.Munich)Bit Mo Experience be superstar.
2.Vladmir Weiss,Winger (M.City) Really Like this kid bags of potential.
3.Dominic Adiyiah,Striker(Milan) a ghanian beauty could become something special.
4.Davide Santon .FullBack(Inter) Hot young defender will be one of the best

  • 37 ashington-geordie // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:32 PM

Personally i would love to see us sign Lavezzi from Napoli. Great finisher and absolutely rapid.
Or i would try and get Lukaku from Belgium, he’s only 17, and has been scoring tons in Belgium and for Belgium.

  • 38 daneevz // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:44 PM

problem with lukaku is im not a fan of buyin players from shite leagues he probably scoring alot of goals becoz the sides he playing against are like our blue Sq no offense to blue sq u just dont really knw if signing someone from belgiun league for say 18+mill is gonna cut it in the prem its a gamble in my opinon.

  • 39 Markaccus // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:52 PM

yeah daneevz, the player may turn out great, but is it worth risking a high price like 18M? If it turns out he cant hit a barn door with a barn-seeking-missile, its 18M doon the drain. I think its always more prudent to loan a player first from a league like that, just in case, if they are mint, then spend the dosh

  • 40 daneevz // Feb 7, 2011 at 5:54 PM

    couldnt agree mo markaccus

  • 41 Widowmaker // Feb 7, 2011 at 6:28 PM

I feel this would be more of a Ashely signing.

    Key word = Free.

  • 42 chuck // Feb 7, 2011 at 6:44 PM

Hey what about Eto, Messi and Ronaldo ?
Look when are you people going to get it ?
There`s no one comming in for more than five or six million, if in fact Ashley goes for that much.
There may be more than one, but this is a buy cheap and sell for double the price club.
It`s been known for generations as a selling club and nothing`s changed.
ERmm ! well except it has been taken over by a REAL buy cheap and sell high guy.
And pardew is aware of it, took him a while , but he`s got the idea now.
Looks like Chelsea and Man. U. already checking out Chiek, ah, erm, how much you say ?
Ermmm ! were looking for around twelve to fifteen million, with add ons.

  • 43 coolcatcarter89 // Feb 7, 2011 at 6:57 PM

    The summer.

    Out:

    Lovenkrands – £1m – £15k p/w
    Smith – £0 (Leeds, fingers-crossed) – £60k p/w
    Xisco – nominal fee – £35k p/w
    Sol – Contract expired – £20k p/w
    Perch – £500k – £15k p/w
    Raylor – £1.5m – £25k p/w
    Krul/Forster? Approx £5m – £15k p/w

    Income = £8m

I’d estimate that would slash, including Andy Casserole’ wage and Joey’ admirable pay-cut, £200k off the wage bill, use £60k to give Cheick and Jose their well-earned wage rise, probably doubling their basic salary, £60k to pay for a shiny new striker.

    In:

    (Shiny, new, prolific, mega striker) – £20m – £60k p/w
    Elmander – Zilch! – £30k p/w
    Gervinho – £10m – £40k p/w
    Chamberlain – £10m – £15k p/w
    Warnock – £5m – £30k p/w

    Outgoings = £45m Wage total = £175k

Net spend (including fee for AC) = £2m
    Wage bill = -£25k p/w

    Voila! Everyone is happy.

If Mike is feeling generous, push the envelope and sign an accomplished CB for a maximum of £8m . Together, with a clean bill of health, we’d have an awesome team, with two quality players for each position, not to mention a few exciting youngsters to berth in the Carling Cup. Nobody can tell me this isn’t realistic, surely?

  • 44 chuck // Feb 7, 2011 at 7:14 PM

Cant get a game for the bottom team in the PL.
Damn, sign him now, before Scunthorpe or Gateshead come in with more money.
Hell thats our kinda guy, ticks all the boxes, ermmm, cheap, not expensive, cant play, not over thirty, etc etc.

  • 45 chuck // Feb 7, 2011 at 7:24 PM

    On the subject of signings.
One guy we had been linked too, Kranjcar, he got a cameo role against us recently and a start last weekend.
On both occasions, showed the quality he is.
Just dont get Harry, unless he`s playing mind games with these guys. (by not playing them)
Someone on these Blogs recently estimated his
    (kranjcar) value at five million.
Well as the finished product, whoever gets him for that price , will have gotten a bargain.
Not to say he`s better than Ireland, who I hope does well and settles in on a permanent basis.

  • 46 Widowmaker // Feb 8, 2011 at 2:57 AM

Kranjcar would be a great signing for us. Versatile and seems to be a very good professional.

Not sure how he performs at the right wing/midfield tho. I thought we are okay with the mid and left side (yes, with Jonas), and Kranjcar would want assurance of first team footy if he should decide to leave Spurs.
