Bolton striker Johan Elmander had one of his best games of the seaosn against Newcastle, when he helped demolish the Magpies 5-1 at the Reebok last year, and was almost unplayable.
Johan Elmander – available for nothing this summer
And he overpowered Newcastle center-back Fab Coloccini for one of the goals, and then Fab was sent off for fouling Johan, so the big powerful Swede wouldn’t get past him for a second time during that same game. It was simply a disastrous game for Newcastle, who couldn’t contain the 6’2″ Swede.
Newcastle have lost one of their powerful young strikers in Andy Carroll, but of course the Tyneside club are now £35M richer for it, but Newcastle still have Shola Ameobi and the up-and-coming 19 year-old Nile Ranger, who are both powerful strikers. And Leon Best has looked good too this last month or so.
And if Newcastle are to continue with their powerful attacking options, 29 year-old Johan Elmander could be more than a decent acquisition in the summer – especially for nothing.
The big doubt with the big Swede is his lack of goals, but he has put the ball in the back of the net this season with 10 goals so far, although he’s on a dry spell at the moment.
We looked at his record on the Bolton FC web site, and since joining Bolton from Toulouse in June of 2008, for £8.2M, Johan has played 93 times for Bolton with 20 goals.
And he has today warned Bolton, that he could well be leaving the club in the summer, and he feels no obligation to stay at the Reebok, which of course is his right.
When Owen Coyle took over from Gary Megson last January, it seemed to completely revitalize the 51 times capped Swede, and he has been in very good form this season for Bolton.
This is what Elmander said today:
“I don’t feel any obligation towards Bolton,” ”They have had the chance to do something about a new deal. We’ve had dialogue but not right now.”
With our only doubt about Johan being his goal-scoring prowess. or lack thereof, he would nevertheless be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle.
We can well imagine in a year or so Elmander and a certain young Nile Ranger scaring the living daylights out of Premier League defenses throughout the land.
You talk about a physical presence up front – Arsenal wouldn’t even turn up to play against those two. 😀
