Newcastle Will Have Difficult Time Acquiring Connor Whickham

There are news reports today that Newcastle United are interested in signing Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham in the summer.

Connor Whickham – 17 year old wonder kid

The 17-year-old, who scored for Ipswich last year n their 2-2 draw at Newcastle, as the Tyneside club secured promotion back to the Premier League, is also a target of many of the top clubs however.

Newcastle are lining up a number of potential transfer targets in the summer, including Bolton’s Johan Elmander and Lille’s Gervinho, if press reports are to be believed.

Whether they can be successful in acquiring young Connor Wickham is an open question, as some big club just come in and usurp any deal,  by offering ridiculous money for the player.

Clubs  like Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are only too capable of doing that, as the Merseyside club showed when they signed Andy Carroll last month.

The 6ft 3in  forward has already represented England at the Under-16, U17,  U-19 and U-21 levels, and certainly looks like a future star.

The report is in the News of the World, but we just wonder if right now,  Newcastle have the prestige and success to attract a player who will be sought after by other clubs in Europe this summer.

The boy turns 18 at the end of March,  and started his career at Reading,  before moving to Ipswich in 2006.

Connor, who was born in Hereford,  has played 58 times for Ipswich with 8 goals, has represented the England U21 side once so far.

he wouldnt join man city or chelsea but i am sure he would jump at the chance of signing for arsenal or man u as they put their trust in youngsters.
if we do go for him then i think he will cost too much for a player who probably wont come good for atleast another full season.

I’m sure our chief scout Graham Carr could find 3 unknown quality players for £10m. I reckon the money would be much better spent elsewhere.

if you can get 5th and 6th, now that is a real achievment.
back on topic, i think unless ashley is willing to buy him seperatly from our carroll money, then it will be a waste as he is not developed enough yet to score consistantly in the premier league week in week out. thats only my opinion though so i could be wrong.

He’s good prospect no doubt about that. But it will be different story in PRM. He will face trouble to up his level. Where’s Victor Moses now ?

However I more than happy to sign him here.

If its true that the big clubs are in for him a bidding war would soon start up and very quickly price us out of a deal IMO.

Elmander will probably end up here along with gervinho if we are lucky. I’ve watched Fraser Forster play a few times this season… Cracking prospect, but needs to improve his kicking massively for him to be considered a contender to steve Harper next season. I remember when given played for months with a groin problem and it affected his kicking massively and resulted in so much pressure being put on the team

we don’t need upcoming strikers that are only really going to develop properly in the next 1 or 2 seasons who is worth £10m. We need an established goalscorer who we know can actually score week in, week out as we don’t have that at the minute, with lovenkrands and best upfront. In my opinion, they’re not good enough for premier league.

think we should definitely get him, look at this goal he scored the other day:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TopgO2eVPgc&feature=related

Also think we should try and get Aiden McGeady, scot winger who is brimming with assists and is currently playing russia (where you can’t imagine he’s going to want to stay too long).

If we could get those two for £20m and pick up a few other bargains, then we would be awesome.

as superbarton said, taarabat would be amazing and not cost the earth. Super team as follows:

    harps
    simpson, taylor, colo, jose
    mcgeady, barton, tiote, tarabat,
    ben arfa
    wickham

don’t know where i would put nolan, maybe just make him manager
