Newcastle United as expected, have announced an unchanged side for the tough encounter at St. Andrews tonight against Birmingham City.
With Birmingham having scored only 13 goals at home in the league all season, and Newcastle having scored just 10 goals in 13 games on their travels this season, there wouldn’t seem to be a lot of goals in this one tonight, and it may even turn out to be a second 0-0 draw in a row for the Magpies.
But a win would be great for Newcastle, and take them up to 35 points and some points away from the relegation zone.
Birmingham are a well organized side, and are hard to score against, and that can be seen by the fact they have conceded just 13 goals in their 13 home games so far.
Of course Newcastle have strikers Best and Lovenkrands in the side, with Shola Ameobi out with his cheekbone injury, and it could be that all four strikers named in the Newcastle squad will again get a run-out tonight, as they did at Ewood Park on Saturday.
We’d like to see the lads win tonight, since we have a string of 6 games now without a win, but we cannot afford to lose and give 3 points to Birmingham, who are below us in the league at the moment.
Former Newcastle players Steven Carr and Oba Martins start for Birmingham, and Newcastle transfer target Seb Larsson is also in the starting line-up, with Lee Bowyer on the bench.
Howay The Lads!!
Birmingham: Foster, Carr, Johnson, Ridgewell, Jiranek, Larsson, Gardner, Ferguson, Bentley, Martins, Zigic.
Subs: Doyle, Murphy, Bowyer, Fahey, Beausejour, Phillips, Jerome
Newcastle: Harper; Simpson, Williamson,Coloccini, Enrique; Barton, Tiote, Nolan (c), Gutierrez; Best, Lovenkrands
Subs: Krul, Perch, Campbell, Guthrie, Ferguson, Kuqi, Ranger

Comment #45After just 2 minutes!!! Gutierrez crossed the ball and Lovenkrands caught it on the bounce just ahead of the stretched defender. We’re looking really up for this one.

Comment #54Give ranger a chance like now, we are hoisting too many long balls, birmingham are pressing.
We need to calm things down, play on the deck.

Comment #70Larson is having a very average game if I’m honest. He’s noticeable, but he’ll be anonymous for the next few games, so whatever.
We aren’t bossing the game but City are matching us which is a bit worrying. Very even, we just need Lover and Best to start talking to each other. Had Best not taken that header, I reckon Lover could have had his second.

Comment #71HT: Newcastle lead 1-0 thanks to a goal from everyone’s favourite Viking, and have managed to hold on to the lead after heavy pressure from Birmingham. Your thoughts?

Comment #72Carr just had a better half than i ever seen him have in a newcastle shirt. Larsson playing well aswell there actually getting allot of joy down our left i thought Jonas would rip carr to shreds today but totally not the case.

Comment #73Harps is awake tonight which is good and the defence looks quite tight apart from when Larsson and Ferguson created a good chance.

Comment #74HOPE we can keep the lead, 35 points is a massive difference and could be the difference. 8 points clear of relegation – we can start looking upward at a top 8-10 finish!

Comment #76Thump what game are you watching larsson is having a very good game has put some top quality passes in so far. As for them matching us they were by far the better side that half for 25 mins we rarely touched the ball after our goal. Were not looking massively troubled but as for city matching they have done so much more than that.

Agree as sky were showing that Brum had 56 percent of the play or something like that.
He is the player in the middle that has looked most dangerous
