Newcastle After Argentine International Midfielder

News today that Sevilla midfielder Diego Perotti could be a summer target for Newcastle United, with the emphasis on could.

Diego Perotti – 22 year-old Argentine midfielder

The 22 year-old Argentine, who can play either as a left winger or as an attacking midfielder, has been in good form in the Spanish La Liga this season, where Sevilla are currently in 8th place.

Diego, who stands just under 5’11” tall,  was born in Moreno, Argentina and joined Deportivo Morónj in 2006, before joining Sevilla in 2007.  He started in the B side there, but over the last couple of seasons he has played 33 times with 5 goals for the Sevilla first team.

Newcastle are flush with cash from the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool, and we have to expect the scouting staff will be out in full force right now, looking at players who can be brought in during the summer to strengthen the Newcastle squad.

But of course Newcastle will still want to make some good deals, and hopefully will never go back to the days of Freddy Shepherd, when the club became famous for paying out huge transfer fees and enormous wages for players who just didn’t make it on Tyneside.

Boumsong, Marcelino and  Luque are just three who come to mind, for which the club paid around £24M in total transfer fees (we’ll not even get into their ridiculous wages), and not one of them turned out to be good enough for Newcastle.

Perotti has just  one cap for Argentina, which he got back in November of 2009, but he definitely fits the profile of good young players Newcastle will be after in the transfer market.

It’s difficult to know if he is good enough for Newcastle, but maybe some readers who have seen him play could make some comments on the kind of player he is.

Comments welcome.

I’ve never heard of him – is he a find for our scouting team? if so I’m please they are seeking out potential jems! – but is he an agent’s proposal with a eye on our cash which they will all be after?

Ah sinner, scouting on youtube? Are you after dennis wises job :D?
If he’s good though, have him. Can’t hurt putting good players in the squad, it creates competition for places

Given that he’s an Argentinian national, been in Spain since 2007 and has one cap, would he qualify to play in England?

Do you think Enrique wants to leave because of Xisco going out to Deportivo? I am getting strong signs that they were good friends and now Enrique is unsettled without him… Like he says in his quote… “Andy Carroll wasn’t the only player to leave in january”

tonnandy, doubt it, xisco’s been out on loan what seems like several times so surely enrique’s used to him not being around!

does anyone have any concrete evidence as to who our targets are in the summer?

Iv read names like gervinho, elmander, hulk being mentioned….any truth in any of them? wots gervinho like?

At 22, he’s got years ahead of him to improve. But like quite a few foreign players, might find the PL a bit too physical. But by the looks of that video (I know the youtube scouting system is a bit crap) he doesn’t look TOO bad, if he can do stuff like that against Sergio Ramos, one of the best RBs in the world, he might be able to frighten a few of the PLs weaker RBs. He’d also be a decent contender for Jonas’ place on LW, competition for spaces and all that.

roblee7 .. its all spec.. but gervinho looks to be our main achievable target for no. 1 striker .. then elamnder in as well, as for Hulk .. would love him and spiderman together .. but it only happens in the comics .. 🙂 .. anyway he’s on the wanted list by alot of top teams..

@ Stuart, your thoughts on who is leaving?

I’m always the optimist so I’m going to say none of the big players, if Ashley shows he’s got ambition in the summer with significant investment, also with some improved contracts, that should persuade them to stay.

I think the only players that may be off are Smith, Lovenkrands(I really like him but hes past his best) and Xisco, and maybe a few more fringe players.

However, if big offers come in for Bull or Tiote its hard to say with certainty that MA wouldnt sell isnt it? haha.

sweendog, cheers for that. am i the only one who actually enjoys the rumours on transfer targets posted by Ed? i know most of them are utter tosh, but i find it strangely enjoyable. Just iv seen a few people post one here asking Ed to stop posting the transfer bollox, i say give him a break and give him credit for providing us with a quality blog and putting so much time and effort into NUFC, the guys a legend if you ask me!!!

If I could have anyone sign for us it would be Lukaku, Elmander and Turan….although I know they’re all impossible (except Elmander, who I think would be an excellent signing, especially on a free)!

anyone else reckon odemwengie could be a decent signing??? every time i see him he lookslike they’re ONLY attacking threat and seems to have settled in the prem pretty well, whilst i also think we could do alot worse than rodallega….N’Zogbia….no thanks!!

Never mind all this speculation, who has received their season ticket renewals pack? Just got mine for L7C the singing corner as was. I go with my son and so qualify for the same two seats and as a loyal supporter have been invited to buy those seats at a combined cost of £830 for the one year deal or £749 fixed for ten years. However if I am not a loyal supporter and just pay the 2010-2011 brochure price I can have both those seats for £445 if I am lucky enough to get tickets in quote:” an area with expected high demand”.I am madder than ever. Stick your tickets up llambias arse mr Ashley

Elmander is crap! Just a 1 season wonder, wouldnt even consider him even if he’s free!

Anyway, hopes for the summer are Tiote, Enrique and Joey, all 3 staying and secondly money from the Carroll sale reinvested back in the the squad!

i have seen him in a few games this season on sky, looks very technical and pacey, he is thought of quite highly i think, would he handle the premier league’s toughness, may take some adapting but as he’s young that wouldnt be a huge issue. can see a 20M price tag being put on him.

Of course not. Why would any club – especially one known to have 35mil to spend – declare an interest in a particular player, with months before the transfer window opens again. The rumours AT BEST come about when scouting staff are spotted at games – but then who’s to say who they are watching anyway.

The players are now openly insisting on big investment before they negotiate contracts so hopefully they will be given some indications about what we are planning – and will re-sign accordingly. The club needs to communicate with the players now – if not the fans.

Roblee – I thought Odemwingie would have been an excellent foil for Carroll, but now suspect the club will be prioritising a replacement target man, instead of a pacey no. 10 type. Also he is 28 or 29 now so could be on the decline soon, with no resale value.

boater, If I was a player I wouldn’t sign a contract until I saw signed contracts/pre-contracts of players coming in. Communication from Ashley and Llambias isn’t to be trusted.

Enrique is most likely to leave in the summer window. Personally i’d be willing to bet he does..
Tiote as well, but they will not go cheap..
    It’s sad, that’s football.
Come summer, maybe we’ll have alot more than the 35m to spend. With Jose and Tiote gone, ALOT more..50m could buy a new team lol

Some of the names been branded round here is insane as people are wanting players who are been linked with top clubs so we have no chance of signing them. We need to think realistic and go for good young talent who have a point to prove. I think someone like Wellbeck would be a brilliant signing for us if Fergie is willing to sell would cost 5 million tops and has proved at the mackems he has the potential to come a top class player so it’s players like him we want to sign.

    toonarmy1986;

You say names being branded around on here are unrealistic yet you say we should get Wellbeck!

He has been outstanding this season and has value has probably gone up to around £12m. Alex Ferguson even told Steve Bruce there is absolutely no chance of him being sold.

I think the likes of Gervinho, Daniel Sturridge, N’Zogbia, and Van Aanholt are realistic targets. We have absolutely no chance of signing players like Lukaku and Hulk though.

He’s been the best left winger in the prem apart from Bale this season. He’s been fantastic in a very poor team. The things he said when he was here aren’t a lot worse than the things Enrique has been saying and we would all want Enrique to stay wouldn’t we?

The player I would want us to sign more than any other, and he is a realistic target, is Gervinho. Him on the right and Ben Arfa on the left would be amazing. And it might persuade Tiote to stay too.
