News today that Sevilla midfielder Diego Perotti could be a summer target for Newcastle United, with the emphasis on could.
Diego Perotti – 22 year-old Argentine midfielder
The 22 year-old Argentine, who can play either as a left winger or as an attacking midfielder, has been in good form in the Spanish La Liga this season, where Sevilla are currently in 8th place.
Diego, who stands just under 5’11” tall, was born in Moreno, Argentina and joined Deportivo Morónj in 2006, before joining Sevilla in 2007. He started in the B side there, but over the last couple of seasons he has played 33 times with 5 goals for the Sevilla first team.
Newcastle are flush with cash from the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool, and we have to expect the scouting staff will be out in full force right now, looking at players who can be brought in during the summer to strengthen the Newcastle squad.
But of course Newcastle will still want to make some good deals, and hopefully will never go back to the days of Freddy Shepherd, when the club became famous for paying out huge transfer fees and enormous wages for players who just didn’t make it on Tyneside.
Boumsong, Marcelino and Luque are just three who come to mind, for which the club paid around £24M in total transfer fees (we’ll not even get into their ridiculous wages), and not one of them turned out to be good enough for Newcastle.
Perotti has just one cap for Argentina, which he got back in November of 2009, but he definitely fits the profile of good young players Newcastle will be after in the transfer market.
It’s difficult to know if he is good enough for Newcastle, but maybe some readers who have seen him play could make some comments on the kind of player he is.
