News today that Alan Pardew is interested in bringing 21 year-old defender James Tomkins to Newcastle in the summer.
James Tomkins – 21 year-old West Ham defender
We have no idea if this is true, but at least it gives us the chance to profile the player, to see if he would indeed be a good acquisition for Newcastle.
We’ll be doing this with a number of players Newcastle are said to be interested in this summer – just in case the reports may actually be true – a one in ten chance at best. 😀
6’3″ tall James was born in Basildon, Essex, and has been playing center-back for West Ham in their very troubled season so far, but he can also play at right back.
James has been at West Ham his whole career, and joined when he was just 8 years old back in 1997.
He made his Premier League debut in March 2008, in a 1–1 draw away to Everton, and was on loan at Derby County for part of the 2008-2009 season, when he played in 8 games.
Tomkins has already played a total of 67 times for West Ham with 2 goals, and he is a regular in the side.
James has played for every England Youth team form U16 and has so far represented the U21 side 7 times.
We have watched him often this season, and he is a young lad still learning his trade, and he makes mistakes, but he looks a top class player in the making, from what we’ve seen of the 21 year-old good looking player.
It remains to be seen what happens with West Ham this season, but they are by no means safe in the Premier League, and remain in 19th position a couple of points from safety, but have hardly been playing well of late.
However, a good run of form could still see them easily avoid relegation, but they need to improve, and fairly quickly too.
If the famous east London club are relegated, James could be a bargain, and we have to think that if he did arrive at Newcastle, he would immediately challenge Danny Simpson for the right back spot.
Again, depending on how much West Ham would want for the player – he would be a very good acquisition for Newcastle, and will only get better with more experience.
Comments welcome.

Comment #12Is he quick ? Good in the air ? Technically any good ? If the answer is no to any of the three, then it would be stupid to go for him and deny our own kids.

Comment #13To be honest, every game I have watched him play in, he has seemed fairly anonymous. Sometimes this is a good thing for a Centre Half, but in his case he seems to go missing. If we could get him cheap he could be worth the risk, after all, at 21 years of age he can only get better and learn?

Comment #14I’ve always liked this kid. Can’t see the ‘Ammers selling even if relegated.
There’s plenty others to fill Campbells boots!

Comment #17he thinks he’s a big time charlie. seen him out and about many times as i live in essex, about 5 mins from where he comes from. typical cocky footballer but apart from his attitude he could be a decent signing if he realises his potential. i know west ham think of him very highly and the fans do too
