New Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has told Newcastle United that their 17 year-old target, Connor Wickham, is not for sale.
Connor Whickham – looks a future star – but at which club?
Newcastle could do well if they brought in the 17 year-old this summer, since he looks a great player in the making and the 6’3″ youngster has shown he can put the ball in the net, and could take over from Andy Carroll, as the talismanic young striker on Tyneside.
The 17-year-old Hereford-born player is also being courted by some big clubs, and both Tottenham and Liverpool were said to be watching him against Hull City on Saturday in their 1-1 draw.
Spurs and Newcastle are said to be the two clubs in the lead for the top youngster, and the advantage Newcastle would have over the London club, is that he would get a lot more playing time At Newcastle than at the London club, where top players like Niko Krancjar even find it difficult to play many games.
This is what Ipswich manager Paul Jewell said about the youngster:
“Every player has a price, you ask Manchester United – Ronaldo went. Every player has his price, but I don’t want to sell Connor Wickham.”
“To answer the question, I haven’t had the opportunity to sell him because since I’ve been here, no one’s inquired about him, certainly not that I know of anyway.”
Paul Jewell is trying to get as much as he can for Connor, and that’s hardly surprising, and the translation of what he says above is – offer us a ridiculous price for Connor and we’ll sell him.
It would be a terrific coup if Newcastle can get Connor Whickam to Tyneside, because as we saw last year, when he scored at St. James Park against Newcastle in the 2-2 draw against Ipswich, he’s an excellent player.
Connor has played 58 times for Ipswich with 11 goals, and it’s interesting that he scored a hat trick in Ipswich’s 6-0 beating of Doncaster Rovers last Tuesday night away at Doncaster.
