Newcastle In The Lead To Sign Connor Whickham?

New Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has told Newcastle United that their 17 year-old target, Connor Wickham, is not for sale.

Connor Whickham – looks a future star – but at which club?

Newcastle could do well if they brought in the 17 year-old this summer, since he looks a great player in the making and the 6’3″ youngster has shown he can put the ball in the net, and could take over from Andy Carroll, as the talismanic young striker on Tyneside.

The 17-year-old Hereford-born player is also being courted by some big clubs, and both Tottenham and Liverpool were said to be watching him against Hull City on Saturday in their 1-1 draw.

Spurs and Newcastle are said to be the two clubs in the lead for the top youngster, and the advantage Newcastle would have over the London club, is that he would get a lot more playing time At Newcastle than at the London club, where top players like Niko Krancjar even find it difficult to play many games.

This is what Ipswich manager Paul Jewell said about the youngster:

“Every player has a price, you ask Manchester United – Ronaldo went. Every player has his price, but I don’t want to sell Connor Wickham.”

“To answer the question, I haven’t had the opportunity to sell him because since I’ve been here, no one’s inquired about him, certainly not that I know of anyway.”

Paul Jewell is trying to get as much as he can for Connor, and that’s hardly surprising, and the translation of what he says above is – offer us a ridiculous price for Connor and we’ll sell him.

It would be a terrific coup if Newcastle can get Connor Whickam to Tyneside, because as we saw last year, when he scored at St. James Park against Newcastle in the 2-2 draw against Ipswich, he’s an excellent player.

Connor has played 58 times for Ipswich with 11 goals, and it’s interesting that he scored a hat trick in Ipswich’s 6-0 beating of Doncaster Rovers  last Tuesday night away at Doncaster.

It would be a bit of a kick in the teeth for Ranger.

Still much to develop but happy to see him in Black and White.

I don’t know why the press always name Newcastle when write the news ‘player don’t move or not for sale’ but when player nearly to sign, they will name Tottenham or Liverpool.

I think this is exactly the sort of player Newcastle should be looking to buy, rather than expensive has-beens or the likes of Carlton Cole who has been mentioned recently. Connor Wickham would be an ideal replacement for Carroll, he’s big, strong, fast and has a trick or two up his sleeve and the added advantage is he is younger than Carroll and doesn’t seem to attract the wrong sort of media attention like Carroll did from time to time. We need to remember we are no longer the buying club we once were and can no longer attract the best players in europe (Ben Arfa being the exception). Young up and coming talents are the way forward and if Connor has his head screwed on he’ll opt for Newcastle over Spurs or Liverpool etc.. as he is guaranteed much more playing time, and if he starts off by sticking a few goals in the net soon we’ll be say “Andy who??”

leave the young lad and the Ipswich supporters alone – they are a good honest club – we hate the gossip about our players so stop upsetting others ! We are the NU the NUFC – not a load of shifty spivs!

This lad would be a tremendous buy for the club and would be putting down a marker that the club is ambitious. Buy and buy as soon as the season ends. Of course Enrique and Tiote will be watching our moves in the market and looking for ambition.

This is the real test for Ashley. Llambias and Ashley have been spouting our new youth policy for years now, to little effect. Here’s a perfect opportunity to acquire the top-rated young striker in the country, just when we lack a number 9.

Come on MA. Splash the Cash Ash.

why liverpool did not do that with us they still went for AC even when told he not for sale every player has a price, so if we offer ipswitch a good price they might let him go as we did with AC

As much as I like the look of CW, and would love to see him in our top, the fees being bandied around for a 17 year old are still a bit risky in my opinion. He could be great, but he could also be a massive flop? Lets hope if we do sign him, we sign him for a more sensible fee with add-ons depending on his progress.

    Agree with post 11.
The first thing newcastle has to do is to-
1.get rid of the unwanted high salary earners
2.renew the contracts of the important players
3.sign in the required and not a potential player (assuming the case of ranger and wickham )
4.potential signings and freebies last (wickham)

There is no rush but we have to put our faith in ashley.

Haha GG its true though. If there was ever a time for us to get behind MA and have some faith in him, its now.

If he invests significantly and smartly in the summer we stand a chance of having a very good team.

If come the end of summer he’s screwed us over again we can go back to hating him then haha!

Gg.i think ma should be given his chance to do what is best for the club.i believe we are moving forward with him and i like his idea of utilizing his used asset.

There is one thing you would agree with me on is that andy carrolls replacement is in spain on loan(xisco) and he would be back unless if sold.ashley is just utilizing the club assest.belive me that no new player would come to the club unless we get rid of the unwanted high earners.e.g.smith and xisco .its business

IMHO its a big risk buying C.W at anything over £5m. FHS he is only 17 years old and my be a one season wonder,,, then again he could be a world beater. Its a risk either way. I’ve never seen him play so dont know, but will leave the descision to those who know the game and to me that is Pardew.

“A kick in the teeth for Ranger” – maybe so, but a striker who can’t put the ball in the net isn’t much use. He needs to start producing. Pardew has already warned him. Many say he hasn’t had many chances. Thats true. Or that he puts himself about well. Also true. But he HAS to start scoring, otherwise he’ll be on the slide to the lower divisions and then OUT of paid football. Once you’re on the “I don’t have to make the effort – I’m set for life” that he’s so far shown, it’s hard to knuckle down. And he hasn’t done much of that.

This kid is the real deal – now that he is playing week in week out (Roy Keane would not give him a good run in the side) he is showing his true worth. He reminds me of Alan Shearer with a lot more pace. I know we have Nile Ranger however Whickam even at the younger age is a better finisher. Its all pie in the sky as this lad will end up at one of current big boys.

    SIGN HIM!!

8mil upfront, with an extra 5mil dependent on goals scored, international appearances and european qualification . i think ipswich would accept that as it hopefully almost guarantees them 13mil and it means if he doesn’t succeed then we save 5mil.

go on fat mike, this could be history in the making, he’s the new shearer.

This player is sooooo similar to Judas that it’s scary! He’s even younger than Ranger! If we get him in then either him or Ranger have to go out on loan to develop their game further.

We didnt like it when a richer club came and pinched Carroll, so why should we do it to Ipswich? Maybe the lad is happy to play there for a couple more seasons before stepping up to Prem. I cant help but think he’ll end up with one of the top 4 big boys though.
