Newcastle Linked With French Defensive Midfielder

Here’s another player Newcastle are said to be interested in to add to the growing list.

Benoit Pedretti – 30 year old French defensive midfielder

And since it’s a player we haven’t yet reviewed on the web-site, here’s a piece on Auxerre star Benoit Pedretti.

The thing that comes out immediately is that the defensive midfielder, who has played for France 22 times, is just too old at 30.

Ashley wants players brought in who will appreciate in value at Newcastle, and the club will help them improve to their full capabilities, so Benoit just doesn’t fit that profile.

The exceptions to that is when the club haven’t got to pay out a transfer fee, which is why Newcastle may be interested in likely free agent, Johan Elmander, the Bolton striker this summer.

Reports coming out of France, say the League One side are resigned to selling the midfielder in the summer, and Fulham are also said to be interested.

Pedretti started his professional career at Sochaux, and played there from 1999 to 2004, and he then played one season at Marseilles, before he played at Lyon.

He joined Auxerre in 2006,  and has played over 140 times for the French club and has 18 months left on his current contract, and is valued at £6M.

We’d be very very surprised if this player is a Newcastle target this summer, and there’s just no way Newcastle would pay out £6M for a 30 year-old.

We are linked with every player, and it means nothing until the summer

Interesting to see Peter Taylor is leaving Bradford only 2 months or so after he turned us down for assistant manager job. Possibility he may end up as part of the coaching staff?

Too old, used to be a decent player but we can get many decent players who are younger and cheaper so no point.

Wouldn’t make sense. Yeah we need another defensive mid but only as a back up for Tiote. Why would we buy a 30 year old back up for 6 million!….

I think you’re right, 37. I think Jonas is a lot better on the right, though (when the poor lad is played there anyway).

HBA could probably play in defence if needs be. Pure class.

haven’t seen jonas on the right much, so i wouldnt know?

but hatem looked untouchable on the right wing for marseille cutting inside like messi !

think jonas has good link up with jose on the left and is tricky to cope with for a defender.

Good team there 37. And I think BA and Jonas can switch sides during the game, throwing opposition in disarray! I’d like to see what Ireland can do too…

I can’t wait til Saturday, a two week wait between games is far too long!

Least when we’ve played we can talk about that rather than transfer talk for awhile.

ontopic, far too old for MA to consider paying out £6m.

No. He’s no better than Guthrie never mind Tiote and Barton! I’d rather we kept our central mid fielders the way they are and bid for Hulk if we get into the Europa League as Porto are also in the Europa League so he’s not expecting Champions League football and we have the money now. If that ends in failure I think Luis Adriano could fit the bill, he’s fast, he scores goals and Gervinho must also be a main target.

I know most supporters on here talk a lot about transfer targets etcc…. but i would like to be gauranteed prem survival before all that speculation starts,
we have a tricky game at the weekend against bolton who are no mugs .
ive been a season ticket holder for some years now and i never get my hopes built up.
3 points on saturday is far more important than being linked with a 30 year old frenchy IMO

    keep the faith

Forget the transfer speculation until the end of the season. We better bring in players in the summer though as we have a thin squad and could be further weakened if Jose does depart. Sadly any decent wage offer from Liverpool will probably cause him to leave. What is our max wage now, about 50K a week for current squad members? Can’t see him staying for that. Colo will probably leave when his contract is up as well. In his first year I wouldn’t have minded but he is becoming an accomplished defender now. I hope this doesn’t play out the way it looks to with us selling off our best players because of wage contstraints. Lets beat Bolton on the weekend and forget about transfer worries!

I dont think the wage cap is a rigid ‘you can’t go over £50k’ like.

I reckon it’s like that for the majority of the squad, but key players would be offered over that if they’re showing that they’re integral to the team eg bull, barton, Collo, tiote.

I expect that once we’re safe we’ll offer enrique a new contract around £55-£60k. He definately deserves it.

Go out and buy the lad Sterling as part of a deal for Enrique, this kid is going to be a world beater. Then buy Van Arnholt.
Up front get Wickham and keep Routledge but teach him how to cross or get penalties.
