There is news today in the Sunday Sun, that Real Madrid were starting to be very interested in Newcastle’s midfield dynamo Cheick Tiote, but Cheick was only too keen to sign on for the Magpies, and that was great news on Friday.
Tiote challenges Bolton’s Davies yeterday
The news is that Cheick’s wages increased four-fold, when he signed his new massive deal, which it reported to be £50K/week over 76 months, and will tie up the 24 year-old at the club until the summer of 2017 – we hope.
Alan Pardew came out last Friday and started to relay some of Mike Ashley’s thoughts on Newcastle’s future, and Alan says he wanted Cheick signed up on a long term deal as soon as possible.
And it seems that Mike Ashley moved very fast to sign up the Ivory Coast International, and certainly it was a very popular signing for the Newcastle fans, who just love the lad.
But as we all know with the Andy Carroll affair, it will not stop Chelsea coming in with a massive bid for the player in the summer, and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens – because Chelsea will make a bid for Tiote, that’s almost a certainty.
It’s also being reported in the Sunday Sun that a number of those super agents, like Paul Stretford, who represent some of the big clubs, were interested in meeting with the Ivorian.
This is what Alan Pardew told the Sunday Sun today:
“After the Andy Carroll transfer I sat down with Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias.”
“That transfer had happened over the phone – we needed to look each other in the eye afterwards,”
“I said that I thought Cheick was, in some ways, the most important player at the club. Definitely for the fans, anyway.”
“I told them a statement would be getting his contract sorted out. To be fair to Mike, he’s done that. He moved very quickly.”
And Alan Pardew believes Cheick still has some improvements to make on the field, and he wants him to be even more influential in the middle of the park, and also improve his disciplinary record, as he has 9 yellow cards this season.
“He has an athleticism and ability with the ball which is difficult to find. You usually get one or the other,”
“You could change his game a bit by making it a bit more offensive, but would that take away from him?”
“Well to be honest I would like to see him influence the game a little bit more.”
“He can definitely improve the number of assists because his passing is so accurate.”
We have to hope Newcastle can hold onto Tiote, Barton and Enrique in the summer.
Because if they can, Alan only needs about four good acquisitions to significantly improve the Newcastle squad, and be all set make an effort to get into the top six next season.
