Newcastle midfield powerhouses, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton, have been named in MATCH magazine’s Top 50 Stars of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Joey Barton – scoring first penalty against Arsenal
The midfielders, who are both 28 years old, have been in great form for the Newcastle side this season, and we understand manager Alan Pardew is not only trying to get Joey on a long term deal at the club, but he also wants captain Kevin Nolan to sign up for an extended stay on Tyneside.
Indeed, Kevin is top of the scoring charts for Newcastle so far this season, with 11 goals in 27 appearances, and he has a total of 86 appearances for Newcastle, since signing from Bolton Wanderers, and has scored a massive 29 goals over the last two years.
Last year at this time Kevin Nolan was named the Championship Player of the Season, beating out other stars such Charlie Adam of Blackpool.
Joey Barton has played 26 times with 4 goals for Newcastle this season, and in his 42 months on Tyneside has 73 appearances with 8 goals, after suffering from three serious foot injuries during his time at Newcastle.
MATCH magazine lists what they think are the 50 best players from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and may be read on-line – via the link we have provided.
We are hoping that Alan Pardew will be successful in keeping both Joey and Kevin at the Tyneside club over the next few years.
But we have to admit we are starting to have big doubts about Spanish left-back Jose Enrique wanting to stay at the famous Newcastle club past this summer, since there are persistent stories that his agents are already in communication with AC Milan.
That isn’t allowed until AC Milan and Newcastle have agreed a fee for the player, so we’re not sure exactly what is going on right now and whether those stories have any truth in them at all.
