There’s a report this morning that former Newcastle target, Norwegian international left back come winger, John Arne Riise, is again interesting the Newcastle club.
John Arne Riise – in action for Roma
First of all we have no idea if this report is true, and Newcastle will be linked with lots and lots of players this summer, so take most of these reports with a (large) pinch of salt.
It certainly seems that Newcastle are looking at a number of left-backs, in case Jose Enrique elects to go to pastures anew over the summer, which we now think that has more than a good chance of happening – but maybe not.
The news on Riise comes in a report in Corriere dello Sport today.
Of course the now 30 year-old Riise, who stands 6’1″ tall, was at Liverpool from 2001 through 2008, and has stacks of experience in England’s Premier League, before he joined Italian club Roma in the summer of 2008.
The Norwegian’s four year contract runs out a year come June, so if he moved in the summer, he would not cost very much, and he would be a fairly decent replacement for Enrique for a couple of seasons.
However, he certainly doesn’t fit the profile of players Newcastle want to sign – usually 26 years old or younger – unless they can get a decent deal for him from the Italian side.
Riise started his career at Norwegian club Aalesund, before joining Monaco in 1998, and in 510 first class club games he has scored 50 goals, and has represented Norway 92 times with 13 goals.
We’d be surprised if Riise arrives at Newcastle in the summer, because he wouldn’t be a good long term investment, and more like a stop gap, but let us know what you think.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Good player, very professional, loads of experience, would soften the blow if jose left, but I think he’ll be too expensive.

Comment #2Too old. If we lose Enrique, I’d really like to see us try for Patrick Van Aanholt. He was quality both for and against us. Massive prospect and ready to play. Definitely worth a try, anyway.

Comment #3Good player years ago when he was at liverpool.
Not exactly a sound long term investment as we all know MA likes.

Comment #4Has a couple of decent years left in him.
roughly 10 percent goals per game at club level, and slightly better at international. scored 8 in 49 just last year for roma, thats about 1 in 6…..all from a left back! (although he did play left wing for liverpool sometimes) if we can get the price down to 5M id take him

Comment #6full backs seem to play for a while and his left foot is like a rocket launcher and is probably better at scoring free kicks than anyone we have at the moment so would be a good move if we do unfortunatly lose enrique and hopefully young ferguson will be the finished article in a couple of seasons if riise gets too old for the pl.

Comment #9ferguson is not a left back hence the reason no one has seen him in that position since pardew arrived at the club, kadar and dummitt are the clubs natural left bks and if reports are true then weve secured antonio luna rodriqeuz a 19 year old left back from sevilla

Comment #10Too old! Talented – yes and unbelievable power in the shot but completely against the new philosophy at the club.

Comment #11Decent player, can’t see it happening though, he’s just north of 30 and fat mike won’t spend money on players of that age.
Come on Jose, sign up!

Comment #13personally think jose will sign a new deal once were safe n if he dosent id only sell him to team abroad, but if he goes oscar wednt is on free from sweden looks a good player and only 25, i think tamas kadar would be great at left bk n i thought it was real slap in the face to him last year when houghton brought in van annholt ahead of him

Comment #17davybtoon, I think we will see Jose, Joey and maybe even Cheik go in summer and probably on the last day ££££’s. But I think Pardew/Ashley will have replacements lined up this time.

Comment #18Have to agree with most TOO OLD and he is now rubbish.
The 30 year old left-back slipped under no pressure to give Shakhtar their third goal in the 3-2 result this evening.
HE SAID
“I was going to hit the ball long, but then I thought about it a moment more and lost my balance. I really don’t know how I did it.

Comment #19Those of you pushing the claims of Kadar, obviously don’t look too closely at his appearance record. He is always injured, and riddled with hamstring problems. Went to Huddersfield on loan, and didn’t last 45 mins. before he was sent back with yet another hamstring tear. Struggles to play a dozen games a season. Not reliable enough.

Comment #21first of all my apoligises to lewman as pardew is in the chronicle today saying ferguson will be a left back but he is a natural left winger, n secondly why do ppl all of a sudden think we will sell all of are players jus bcoz we sold carroll, if the players ask to leave or in barton n jose case refuse new deals thn yes they may leave but if no wants to go they wont b sold simple as that now we all kno jose is great but he can b replaced i believe tiote is the most important player in what we are doin

Comment #22Ecactly, We are acting as if Jose were not a Newcastle player.
As for Riise? Hardly likely. Why are we suddenly being linked with all of Roma’s aged cast-offs? Yesterday Adriano, today Riise.
And while I’ve got the floor, I want to say I’ve absolutely had it up to here with headlines like ‘Tiote happy at Toon’, ‘Taylor want to end career on Tyneside’ etc. etc. – Its hard enough supporting the Toon (42 barren years with only Divi 2 titles to get excited about) but with most fans lucky to be on the average industrial wage, I’ve reached a point where if anyone doesn’t want to play at my club on massive (even if reduced) wages and have me cheer them every time they trot out, then they can all f**k off as far as I’m concerned if they don’t like it. All these headlines have us fans like teenage lovers, hanging on every word and looking for signs of being noticed. Well, no thanks. Whoever it is next can just silently sling his hook and not let the exit door smack him on the arse on the way out.
Please stop feeding us this stuff, Ed.

Comment #23Riise WAS a good player – once upon a time.
That boat should have sailed by now.
If Enrique goes we should move heaven and earth to get Van Aanholt. He was excellent when he was here and seemed to be very impressed with the club and fitted in well with the players.
It may not be too difficult to move him providing The Controller doesn’t offer Chelsea a a bag of discounted footballs and a few training tops from Sports Direct in exchange.

Comment #24C`mon ! the press digging in the re- run files !
The club was interested a coupla years ago, but why would we be interested in a thirty plus defender, who if not good enough for Pool, why should he be good enough here ?

You could already consider the outs, out !
As for incoming, like Albrightson/ Johnson/Gerviho/ of which we wont get any, well maybe Gervinho ?
Who the f**k is Ola Toivonen, sounds like a Finn ?
Forget Milner and Benzema, untouchable !
Think we will sign Ireland.
As for krkic & De Jong , havent a clue ?
