Jak Alnwick is a top up and coming player for Newcastle United, and only last night the young goalkeeper won the coveted Wor Jackie Award at the Sports Newcastle Awards.
Jak Alnick – Newcastle top young goalkeeper
The Wor Jackie Trophy is in honor one of Newcastle’s all time greats – Ashington-born Jackie Milburn – who scored 200 goals for Newcastle United, and is awarded to one of the North East’s rising young stars.
The trophy has previously been won by youngsters like Andy Carroll in 2007 and Nile Ranger in 2009, and it cements Jak as one of Newcastle top up and coming youngsters, who was outstanding last season for the Newcastle U18 side that made the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup.
Jak was born in Hexham, the same birthplace as Newcastle’s 22 year-old goalkeeper Fraser Forster now on loan at Celtic, and he is the younger brother of 24 year-old Ben Alnwick, who was at Sunderland and played for the Black Cats 19 times, and is now at Spurs and has been on loan at many clubs and is currently on loan for a month at Doncaster Rovers.
Jak had initially joined the same club as his elder brother Ben at Sunderland, but he showed his intelligence and came to his senses in 2008, when he joined Newcastle, and has been a big success ever since, for one still so young.
Jak was recently capped last November for the England U18 side, and mad his debut against Poland in England’s 3-0 win, and the next game is later this month against Wales. It’s interesting the other goalkeeper in the squad against Poland was Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford.
Another member of that same squad, was the much sought after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Southampton, who was thought even to be a possible Newcastle target.
Jak will be remembered for saving a penalty in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup last season against Aston Villa, and was a standout for the team then, when he was only 16 years old. The goalkeeper has already played a number of games for the Newcastle Reserves side too, and is very highly regarded on Tyneside.
Watch this lad, who seems to be destined for the top, and he’s yet another great young goalkeeper at the Newcastle United club.
