When one door closes another opens, and when Andy Carroll left his home town club, where he said he was living the dream, to get huge wages at Liverpool, and presumably start living a richer dream, Leon Best came into the side and has done the job so far for the Newcastle club.
Leon Best – in action against Everton
Leon Best was on hand again on Saturday afternoon, exactly where he should have been, to easily head home a simple goal to put Newcastle ahead, albeit against the run of play against Everton.
But alas, the Newcastle defending was then pathetic, and we gave away two poor goals in the following 13 minutes, and could never get back on level terms, and suffered another home defeat, our 5th in the league this season.
That was Leon’s sixth goal in a total of 12 appearances for Newcastle this season, and it put him level on goals with Shola Ameobi as Newcastle’s 3rd top scorer, behind captain Kevin Nolan and the departed Andy Carroll on 11 goals each.
Alan Pardew, who prides himself on his coaching skills of strikers, said today:
“I wouldn’t say I have been surprised, but I am pleased for him because the feeling was that he was going to leave the club from a lot of people, including people within the club.”
“He has answered a few critics in the short spell he has had.”
“But of course, there are still another nine games to go and he needs to keep on where he is and make sure he is at the level at which he has been playing for the last few games, which has been terrific.”
Leon was unlucky not to get the Newcastle equalizer, after he headed home nicely in the second half, but he was said to have pushed center-back Phil Jagielka.
Leon has started to look the part at the Newcastle club and is a mkuch better header of the ball than we had realized, but it;s also true what Alan says – that he still had to produce over the last 9 games of the season.
But if Leon can get into double figures in goals this season, he will have become a much more valuable commodity at the Newcastle club, than he was at the end of last year.
It’s great to see players come through at the Tyneside club, and while we didn’t think he would make it on Tyneside, he’s starting to prove us wrong – and good for him!
