Newcastle Interested In Cameroon International Goalkeeper

There’s report out today that Newcastle may be interested in signing two players from Spanish La Liga side Espanyol.

Carlos Kameni – Espanyol’s Cameroon goalkeeper

One is a player who we’ve already reported supposed Newcastle interest in – and he’s winger/striker Callejon.

The 24-year-old started his career at Real Madrid and played 40 times with 21 goals for the Real Madrid B team in 2007-2008, but never played for the first team.

Callejon left Madrid in the summer of 2008, and signed a four-season contract with RCD Espanyol, and from what we can tell he seems a very decent player, who has played around 80 times for Espanyol with 8 goals, and is said to be attracting interest from Premier League clubs, in addition to Newcastle.

However the other Espanyol player Newcastle are said to be interested in is Cameroon International goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.

Reports suggest that Newcastle have identified Kameni as a possible replacement for Steve Harper, who turns 36 next week., but has anybody told the reporters about two 22 year-old top young goalkeepers Newcastle already have on their books in Fraser Forster and Tim Krul?

Probably not, and we cannot think Newcastle will want to spend any money on a goalkeeper this summer.

The 27 year-old 6’1″ goalkeeper has been at Espanyol since 2004, and has played over 200 times for the club and 60 times for Cameroon.

When he joined Espanyol at age 21, he was already a Cameroon International having made his debut when just 17 years old.

But we very much doubt Newcastle are scouting Kameni when the Newcastle scouts  are seen watching Espanyol games, because goalkeeper is hardly a weakness at all on Tyneside.

If we’re looking at goalies, we’re looking at the wrong end of the blood pitch. Jeez… !

    Definite bogus story.

I read an article last night, that stated Everton are at the mercy of the bank they owe, to the tune of £47m. This means Everton are vulnerable to bids for their players, as recently, they sold their training ground because the bank demanded £8m credit instantly.

This in mind, I think if Enrique leaves, Everton would be hard-pressed to turn down, say, £18m for Baines and Coleman? 😉

Also, I hope AP is keeping tabs on the Djibril Cisse palava. If he becomes available for free, definitely snap him up.

Kameni is a good goalkeeper, he makes great saves and big mistakes.

    I prefer Forster.

And Djibril Cisse is good =)

Pointless paper talk, why do we keep getting linked with keepers. True, Foster might be off in the summer as he’s loving first team football at Celtic, but Krul is going nowhere.

I’ve seen this keeper play a few times for Cameroon, and he is a good shot stopper, but always punches the ball out rather than getting on top of it, which is generally punished in the Prem. With regard to the story though, I would echo the thoughts registered above, and ask why on earth we would be even looking at keepers?

I’d not be expecting a Europe spot. In terms of kids Phil Airey seems to have a future, a few lads have gone on loan, Lua Lua could be good next season, Forster would be my first choice over Krul with K going out on loan for a season…maybe to Celtic. As always Vukic will pop up. If those 4 could come on a bit next season we’d have a winger, striker, creative mid and a good goalkeeper…..Stayls and Willo maybe the CB spine. We’ll see

I do not see this deal going through. Signing an African keeper will mean that we have to play a 2nd choice keeper whenever he goes for the African Nations Cup. Also, we have Froster, Krul and Harper in the goalkeeping department. Our goalkeepers have been doing a decent job so I do not think it is our most urgent area to reinforce.

I am quite curious as to why some of our fans want to sign Djibril Cisse. The guy does not fit my club’s current philosophy as he is 29 years old. No doubt Cisse is very quick, but he is over rated and I would take Martins back any time. Reason being, Martins is faster, more agile, and has proven he can score for Newcastle. Remember Martins’ first season ?

Don’t even contemplate the idea of getting Collejon, I was speaking to some Spanish friends about him and they said he is one of the best players in La Liga and Real Madrid want him and that he wouldn’t go to Newcastle at all.
