Only Top Top Striker Should Replace Andy Carroll

As long as there is no calamity in our last 9 games of the seaosn, and we remain in the Premier League then Newcastle fans can look forward to a very busy, and hopefully a very successful, summer  transfer window.

Carlton Cole – not good enough to wear number 9 shirt at Newcastle

The doubts about whether Mike Ashley will spend most of the Andy Carroll cash seem really overblown, and ample money will be made available to manager Alan Pardew to bring in some new players, and especially a new striker to replace the departed local lad,  Andy Carroll, who was supposed to be living his dream on Tyneside.

Currently the number 9 shirt is vacant, and we’d like that to remain the case until Newcastle bring in a striker worthy of wearing the famous shirt in the Newcastle side.

Before Andy Carroll had the shirt this season,  it was worn by Oba Martins, now trying to get a permanent deal at Birmingham, but he wasn’t really good enough to be given the number 9 shirt.

You have to remember two of Newcastle’s all time greats, Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn, made that shirt so famous, and they were  both local lads too.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I think the No 9 is a very special shirt here and I’m not going to give it to just anybody.” “I really hope that somebody emerges – or we bring somebody in who can carry that shirt.”

“It is an important figurehead for this football club.” “It brings with it a pressure that the player who wears it needs to be able to deal with.” “I will have to think long and hard about that.”

Pardew will attend the Stoke City FA Cup tie with West Ham on Sunday, to check out the Stoke side, who have been having it tough of late, and we only have to hope they don’t come to life against Newcastle.

Everton seemed to do that last Saturday at St. James’ Park but then immediately slipped back to their poor form at home to Birmingham, and could only draw with the side fighting relegation.

There has been talk of Alan being interested in England striker Carlton Cole, but wee have to hope this player, who is fighting to get a place at West Ham, doesn’t arrive on Tyneside this summer – we need somebody coming in for Andy Carroll who’s an awful lot better than Carlton Cole – surely?

Pardew added:

“The No 9 shirt here is iconic in the game and whoever wears it needs to be able to carry the responsibility that goes with it.”

There are some decent players Newcastle have been linked with already in the transfer market, but the difficulty is knowing which players Newcastle are really interested in, from the many we will be linked with.

We need four to five good players brought in during the summer, and if we can do that and also keep our best players like Jose Enrique, Cheick Tiote and Joey Barton on Tyneside, we’ll be ready to rumble next season.

Howay The Lads!!

Out of our strikers take Ranger out he will become great but needs loan experience for next season, the only one whos stepped up to the plate has been Leon so he should stay because of this, Loven and Ameobi just cannot cut it at this level.

Instead of one we may need 2 but we have the strude in who we buy we dont want to waste like 10+ Mill on a striker who flops, If we get one who we want as a starter and a young propect/backup this will be fine we need atleast two as for me if Rangers on loan Lov/Ame aint good enough so that would leave us with 1 striker in Leon.

We have to look for these bargains from other leagues, maybe go to ones we wouldnt usually go to say J:League Takashi Usami or buy japanese striker Shinji Okazaki who joined Stuttgart they MAY get relegated and he is a great player.
Or from Portugal, as for example a season or 2 ago David Luiz was bought from Vitoria to Benfica for like 500k and then sold for 25 Million.

There are PLENTY of bargains out there from more obscure leagues we just need to be patient and not panic buy a crud player like Carlton Cole.

gorskino -very valid post but asian players dosnt hold eu passports so forget about it…..
this fantasy scouting is doing my head in…
we all got favourites and many plays fm manager so knows whos going to be the next superstar,,,reality is we are throwing silly money after unproven epl players….the likes of cole, konchesky, jarvis are more likely to happen instead of hulk, gervinho, okazaki

Good words from Pards – since day one he’s always understood the importance of the number 9.

For me, i think it should be held back for a year. Best has done well since stepping in but in no disrespect he doesn’t have the ability to carry it. If he bangs in 15+ goals next year i might think otherwise but until then he should stick with 20.

For me AC was the epitome of what the shirt represented. Big strong, local lad, he bullied every defender, got in their face and scared the shit out of most teams. He also had the confidence and arrogance to carry the shirt.

Anyway he can get fooked for all i care now. I think we have some really exciting prospects coming through and it would be great to hand it to a local lad again. IMO it should be put onhold for at least a season to see how rises to the challenge.

does that shirt really means that much? i rather have euro nights back instead of having a goalgetter and finish 15th,.
i worshipped shearer – but have lost all faith after seen the former #9 leave all to quickly after talking about his undying love and loyalty to this club……

for f…k sake give to kuqi or ameobi so we can give it to a local up and coming youngster in the next season without pressure,,,phil airy or ranger springs to mind…in that case they can only do a hell of a lot better even blindfolded so all pressure would be off……hurrah way to go..
all rise for shefki kuqi our new # 9 – take a bow

Cole is no-where near good enough, we should have went for Demba Ba, just look at what he´s doing at West Ham! Gervinho is more of a wing forward than a centre-forward, Lucas Barrios of Dortmund would be a good shout, but he won´t come cheap! (10-15 million) maybe. Would Gignac be available?

I prefer Kanu than Kuqi and Cole.

Lets not get carried away with the No. 9 # shirt stuff.
I`ve seen most of the since Albert Stubbins and believe me some were ugly !
There`s some good youngsters out there, problem is with young players though, they dont always live up to expectations.
Carlton Cole for instance, remember him early in his career, looked good, but never reached his potential.
Which makes that decision to invest in a youngster so difficult.
A prime example was Carroll, personally i thought he was awkward and lacked pace, good in the air sure, but i have been known to be wrong once or twice, i think !

    shearermania,

what do you mean by no EU passport?
Okazaki is capped 41 times with 21 goals, he will get a work permit without any problem. A really good call for me, pacey, determined and plays with his heart.

Usami is perhaps a little difficult, but Arsenal has signed a Japanese kid named Miyauchi Ryo who was only a high school player.

By the way, I don’t think Okazaki and Usami are even in the FM game.

Judas could have been our great number 9 since Shearer. southerngeordie, post 6 – spot on. But I too don’t give a sh%t what happens to him now. He could have easily had more success in his career with us as he would have played week in week out, something he is not guaranteed of at Liverpool. He could easily become the biggest flop in English Football History (it could still end very well for us). I like some the names being touted about around here as our possible number 9. He doesn’t have to be local and he doesn’t have to be British. He just has to know what he’s wearing and play really well every game. Ideally he has to be big, strong, quick, young and can handle the shirt. As someone mentioned above there are many bargains out there. We just have to find him like we did with Tiote and Ben Arfa. I have faith in Pardew and Graham Carr to do just that this summer. It’s a positive sign that Pardew is mentioning the number 9 shirt now as it could mean that’s his first priority and he’s already started to find our new star striker. Personally I would be happy to get a quality unknown and let him earn the number 9. No more trophy players please, unless if it doesn’t cost us a fortune that is.

I would go for Keisuke Honda and that young tall England under 21 kid we were linked with recently, emmm Wickingham was it? Also wingers Gervinho or Sylvain Marveaux to supply them the ammunition. I like Max Gradel (Leeds winger) as well and fellow countryman Tiote could easily convince him to come. He would be the cheaper option too. For defense I would love to see Micah Richards and that Chelsea kid that did very well for us Patrick Aanholt.

I’d like to see some more British players like Connor Whickham and Nicky Maynard and then a fast winger and they may have to come from abroad as there doesn’t seem to be any good value British wingers about .
Maynard reminds me of Andy cole and just the type of player we have not had for a while

It isn’t that iconic, apart from Shearer and Carrol recently, there’s been some very average players wear it in the 2000s.

And, sadly and player worthy of the shirt will not be prepared to come to Newcastle anyway. We may have the money now, but will still be out bid by the big boys, who can also offer European football.

A frustrating transfer window again this time out, not unlike the last one. We’ll end up with players from the bottom of our want list, not the top.

We need to get gervinho in this guy is class. Like many have said not necessarily an out n out striker but the guy will score goals him n ben arfa either side of sturridge n teams would be scared to face us. I like the way ranger is being eased into the team aswell the kid has talent that is undeniable

Pard’s mention of the no.9 is simply because he is desperate to get more out of an attack which was critically diminished when Carroll went and wasn’t replaced.
In the hope maybe of getting an extra spurt out of Best or Ranger, the only possible contenders at the minute – and neither anywhere near where they need to be yet.
As for a no.10, – arguably we’ve been without one of those for a couple of years – Pards could do worse than splash some of his AC wonga on Shane Long at Reading.

I just hope they scout enough to bring in somone who can do a job for us, and also become a fan favourite. Personally though, we should keep the no9 vacant until a player signs and then proves himself to be worthy of it. The incentive of taking the famous Toon number 9 should be enough incentive for a striker to join, prove himself and earn the shirt, rather than just been tossed the shirt when he signs like they did with Oba.
I love Oba, his style was something that was different to what most teams offered, in a similar way to Tino, unique, but absolute quality. But, he never proved his position as no9 over two seasons.

    Please, just not Carlton Cole….

Gervinho will not come to NUFC. If the rumours are true that were even linked with him, then the roomer big clubs are linked with him are probably also true.

Therefore, he will move to a big club as they can offer: a better wage, bigger transfer amount, better conditions, a chance at silver ware, and European football.

Yes, we have extra money this time out, but its not going to be soent recklessly on one player.
