News today in the Sun that Newcastle are interested in Saint-Etienne defensive midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Blaise Matuidi – again linked with Newcastle
This is not the first time this year that Newcastle have been linked with the player, but there’s little new news in the Sun report, other than to say the fee could be near £7M for the 23 year-old 5’9″ player.
It’s almost certain that Alan Smith will be leaving Newcastle in the summer, and Alan Pardew will therefore have to bring in another midfielder who can challenge Cheick Tiote and add some depth to the Newcastle squad in central midfield
Last September Matuidi made his international debut in France’s 2–0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, when he came on as a substitute, and he also appeared in the game against Belarus.
Matuidi has been the captain of his club since 2009, and the Toulouse-born Matuidi turns 24 early next month.
He is described as a very strong tackler, and started his career with Troys in 2004, and he played 68 times with 4 goals for that club, before moving to Saint-Etienne in 2007, on an initial four year deal.
That would mean he could be a free agent this summer, and we cannot find any news that he has since signed an extension to his initial deal.
Blaise has so far played a total of 141 times for the Saint Etienne club with 3 goals, and the Sun is reporting Newcastle could make a £7M swoop for the player in the summer. In the past both Arsenal and AC Milan have been interested in the player.
This lad looks a good player and played 25 times for the France U21 side, and we’d like to think there is some truth in the Sun report about the Newcastle interest.
