Are Newcastle Close To Deal For Fulham Free Agent?

There is some news emanating from Sky Sports, that  links Newcastle with a possible move for Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera.

Zoltan Gera – free agent in the summer

The Hungarian International becomes a free agent again in the summer, and is not expected to sign a new contract at the London club.

Gera can play as an attacking midfielder, but is a bit of a utility player too, and can also play on either wing and has played 111 times for Fulham with 17 goals, since joining them in 2008 on a free transfer from West Brom.

Just because Newcastle got a massive £35M from the Andy Carroll deal doesn’t mean the club will not be after some good free agents in the summer, and the club have already been linked with two Swedes – Bolton’s Johan Elmander and Birmingham’s Sebastian Larsson.

Gera is a bit old at 31, and indeed turns 32 next month, but that may not be a barrier to Newcastle when free agents are concerned, since they can be signed for nothing, and could do a job over the next tow or three years at the Tyneside club. The investment is only in their wages.

Gera’s agent Vladan Filipovic had this to say to, which is Gera’s own personal web site:

“I don’t know what is in the background, but Gera’s contract will expire this summer so Fulham can’t get money for him,”

“I can’t confirm which teams are interested, but it’s not a secret that the half of the Premier League want to sign Gera.”

“At the moment it’s not possible to sign Gera. In England it’s not possible to sign a pre-contract before the end of the contract.”

“He could only sign a pre-contract if a team would like to sign him from outside of Great Britain. This may also be a possibility for him.”

This sounds a bit like his agent pumping the player up, so he can get a decent new contract in the summer, but we have to think Zoltan is a bit too old to be a real Newcastle target this summer.

Zoltan has played at Hungarian clubs Pécsi Mecsek and Ferencváros, and in England has played at West Brom and Fulham, and he has 467 first class appearances with 98 goals so far in his career.

In addition Gera has 69 International caps for Hungary with 19 goals.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Heeelll no! Why would we do this if we wanted to actually play well?

I’m beginning to wonder why the heck Ireland was signed. If he doesnt feature today I would really begin to question why we’re forking out for him to be here.

3 points with a Nolan goal today!

I believe we have got to have a big strong physical team today with some suprises.

    S Taylor—-Williamson—-Coloccini—-Campbell–

Subs: Simpson, Perch, Ferguson, Richardson, Ameobi, Loverman, Krul

    1. 4 Big strong defenders, Stoke don’t play with mutch wing work, hence small pitch.

    2. Jonas on the right and Ranger on the left, they won’t expect that, as a narrow pitch Nile Ranger can support Leon as mutch as possible and Jonas can play on the Right wing were he is at his most affective, in my opinion.

not really commenting on this article, but would instead like to ask a question. I see a lot of talk about streaming and fans watching games in local pubs. Do the fans in England not have access to watch the lads run around every week on their T.V. at home????? I’ve caught every game live this season admittedly at 1 am – 3 am each week, but I can still watch the boys. Do you over there not have the same priveledge????

looking at our team sheet this morning it occurs to me that with a couple of injuries, a couple of suspensions, and a couple of substitutions we could finish a game with Kovenkrands & Kuigi as our strikers.
no disrepect to two honest employees – but what sort of planning, ambition and investment could leave us with this year’s emergency free signing playing along side an emergency free signing from two years ago (who was even released then resigned because we were desperate)?
I think we will get the points we need to survive 1 by 1 – but how & why have we got into this mess and how & when are the club going to reward our loyalty by geting us a half decent team with a strong squad?

Are NUFC becoming a dumping-ground for the EPL? Every aged, injured and out of contract journey-man types in Europe are lining up their last big move. We don’t need another set of bench-warmers

ddmacker – then count me in, no signing on fee and I only want 10,000 a week – can I play? well, not since about 1975 when my knee went, then my back in 1986, and I’d have to wear my glasses – but neither can some recent signings play so I’ll join them in the treatment room for a free daily massage and I doubt anyone will notice!
will gosling ever play for us? can we now see why everton were reluctant over his contract? did we realy get a bargain?

I’m sorry but how much more wrong could you people be. Zoltan Gera on a free would be a cracking deal , if we want a push for Europe we need a stronger squad. If Gera did come he’d be a cracking squad player for nothing, he’s only gonna be backup. Let’s not get deluded

Good player, but we can sign a better player and younger.Gera won’t do any special difference.

Aussie, they can only broadcast a number of games on tv as if they played all of them fans may just stay at home.
Nile Quinn slates his supporters because they watch the games in the pub illegally on foreign satelites and don’t go to the match, although with our owner doesn’t have that problem as we fill the ground so people have to go to the pub to watch the lads 😀

if gera was here already, he’d be the type of player we should be looking to move on.
32 and not a first team regular, all he would do is block ferguson’s progress, like Duff did to N’Zogbia..

Gera is a decent player but like most utility players is OK in various positions but not outstanding in any one.
We have Ryan Taylor who is the same but younger. What is the point of this?

    1. is a hungarian website, not Gera own website .
    2. did U watch him at Fulham? Saying that hes the kind of Ryan Taylor is lol to me.
Gera is a really good and technical player, much more tecnical, than most of NUFC players. Yes hes old, thats true, but dont saz hes a average player, hes hell not.
Hes mostly good at CF position behind the strikers, giving the good passes, assists.
Just watch some matches when Fulham gone to EL final. Hes good for 1 or 2 years thats for sure. Aldo he was really at hes peak at Fulham.

Mo, I know it’s easy to comment in hindsight but, bar throw ins and corners. Stoke spend most of the time concentrating on the supply from their wide-men (signed Pennant specifically to work opposite Etherington) so that formation would be a nightmare.

No point in getting Gera. He’s a canny player but lower end of the table and getting on a bit.

Shame Ferguson missed at the end of that run, would have been a goal of the season contender.

Most of you guys just dont get it !
Gera is a decent player who can fill in a number of roles, great utility player.
Just cause he`s 31 does`nt mean shit, he can still play and has a couple of seasons left.
Would come fairly cheap and be IMO a decent addition to a squad thin on the ground.
