There is some news today that both Arsenal and Newcastle United are after Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.
Edinson Cavani – El Matador in Italy
The 24 year-old Uruguayan striker, who has Italian descent, seems to be in great demand from both Premier league clubs.
He has significant presence on the pitch, and for this the Italians have nicknamed him El Matador, and he seems to be able to score the goals.
You would have thought that Arsene would be doing something about the brittle Arsenal defense, which has cost them many important goals this season, including the embarrassment of giving Birmingham a goal in the last minute of the Carling Cup.
Arsenal shockingly lost the Carling Cup a few weeks back to Birmingham, who are now 2nd bottom of the Premier League, and could well be relegated this season.
But of course the same thing could be said about Newcastle’s defense, which is not great, and they leaked four bad goals to Stoke last Saturday, in a shocking 4-0 loss.
It seems that Arsenal will need to fight off both Newcastle and Manchester City for the striker, who has 29 goals in 40 appearances for Napoli since joining them on loan from Palermo last year.
The 6′ tall striker has played 29 times for Uruguay with 8 goals and started his career in Uruguay with the Danubio club, and of course he was part of the very successful Uruguay side, who famously reached the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup last summer, before going out 3-2 to Holland.
After playing there 30 times with 9 goals for his first club, he joined Palermo in Sicily, in 2007, and played 117 times for the Italian club with 37 goals, and moved to Napoli on loan last summer.
He has so far played a total of 185 club appearances in his career, and has 76 goals.
Newcastle could be after this player in the summer, but only if they are still a Premier League club come May 22nd.

Comment #6Edinson Cavani – El Matador. What’s the point? He’d just try to skewer El Toro.

Comment #15Even if this was realistic (which it is not) this would be horrible value for the money. Cavani is never going to have more value then he does right now. Let City have these type of players and give me the Tiote’s all day long- young, hungry, talented, and a good investment for the club both on the pitch and in terms of investment.

Comment #16If you knew anything about football you can look to about a month ago on sky sports and the chairman said they don’t need to sell any players ie him or hamsik and only a ludicrous offer of over 50mill euros would they consider so ED I would really delete this story as it is one of the most pathetic transfer stories ever. Like I said sky sports will have the chairman story there somewhere as he’s near top scorer and scored again yesterday an scored a hat trick against juve last month

Comment #19The best striker I think we could hope for in the summer, is D. Bent, if it prevails that we survive and Villa go down, big IF. There’s the Pardew link, coupled with a vacant no9 shirt too.
Sounds farfetched now, but in a couple of months he could be a real target. Say £15m all the above taken into account?

Comment #20i know we wouldn’t get all of these, so i’m going to be realistic. I’d like to see AT LEAST ONE of these at newcastle in the summer:
Gervinho
Wickham
Krancjar
Lens
N’Zobia

Comment #21ha, ha ha, ha. Let’s be honest, Ameobi’s got more chance of getting pregnant than us getting this guy!
Oh and Taiwo said that his dream club and number one destination is AC Milan.

Comment #22Too expensive for me! Wouldnt want to see us spending more than 10M on anyone player. Anyone more than this and they are likely to be at the peak of their career so their resale value is only going to go down and we aren’t going to have the funds to bring in many other players

Comment #25Cavani, yeh and we have been linked with Messi as well. I think it’s more likely to be a striker already in the PL maybe with the purchase of Gervinho to partner them.

Comment #26The linking of Newcastle with this player is nothing other than a pathetically pitiful publicity stunt by the FCB to try and sell his 10 year season tickets. More fool anybody who thinks there is any more to it than that.
This summer Newcastle will be selling not spending. The FCB will be looking to double the £35 million he got for Carroll by selling the likes Nolan, Barton, Enrique, Tiote, Steven Taylor, Guitierrez and Colloccini.
The yardstick for new signings has been set by the “capture” of Shefki Kuqi direct from the football scrapheap. So expect a few more duffers, crocks and rejects at a total cost of “no capital outlay” and you won’t be disappointed.

Comment #28Ed what I would like to see here are more cheerful articles like the one on how we could possibly jump Sunderland in the table 😀
I personally need to be cheered up after witnessing the crap our team did against Stoke. With Best injured, Tiote suspended and Ireland, Gosling and Ben Arfa still nowhere to be seen and the lower teams hitting winning streaks, these are worrying times indeed.

Comment #30And we wonder why other fans say we’re deluded…… just re-read some fo what you muppets have posted here…. get s grip will you, we’re a bottom half team who’ve just been promoted & have no european games to offer & you seriously think we’re going to get players like this & Alderweireld, Wolfswinkel, Bent etc …
Yet we have no idea how much Pardew is getting this summer but 1 poor sole has already spent £42m on players, half of who no one’s heard of before…. stop dreaming will yer for frak sake….

Comment #31The headline should read:
Newcastle Blog Editor writes deluded headline after reading pile of shite on Internet page.
And thats about the entire size of this pile of utter shite. We have got more chance of signing Messi than paying over £NIL for anyone this summer.
Ed, please do not build a discussion page based upon utter pants reporting. If you are so stick for something to do, why not paint the fence or something………..
Edinson Cavalli to Newcastle? Anyone willing to place a bet? Didnt think so. Lets get real, we are not in the frame for anyone looking to improve. No Europe (possibly no PL) no ambition, no quality management.
Elmander YES
Wickham YES
Graeme Carr: Please please please come up trumps.

so he has covered it by selling carroll to fund the wage bill for the fizzy pop league..

Comment #33If we do go down, it wont be such good business then will it? Without goals, you dont win games. dont win games, get no points. get no points, get relegated. Simples.
