Newcastle have been linked with a move for Wolves winger Matt Jarvis, who was called up to the England squad for the first time this week.
Matt Jarvis leads the running at the England training camp
Matt is in the England squad for the European Championship qualifier against Wales on Saturday, which could be a tricky game for England, if they don’t find some way of corralling the gifted Gareth Bale down that left wing.
The 24-year-old Middlesbrough-born player has looked good at times for Wolves this season, but seems a little inconsistent.
Matt started his career at Milwall when he was very young, but he was released by the London club and joined Gillingham in 2003, where he played 122 times with 16 goals before being signed by Wolves in 2007.
While his initial deal was only for two years, he has since signed a new deal and is now contracted to Wolves until 2015, so we don’t know what kind of money Wolves will be asking for him, but if Wolves are relegated, he could become a bargain buy.
Of course if Newcastle are relegated we’ll be seeing players leave Newcastle, much like they did two years ago, and that would be a complete disaster for the Magpies, but we don’t expect that to happen.
This is what Matt said yesterday, when asked about being selected for the England squad for the first time:
“I suppose everything has been coming together at the right time. I’ve been working hard on different parts of my game.”
“I was more speechless than anything, it was a fantastic feeling today,” “Training was good, short and sharp, I just wanted to get out and train and obviously get more comfortable.”
“I didn’t really know any of them, it was kind of like having your first day of school again,” “But they made me feel welcome.”
“I can play on the right or the left and hopefully I can do well.”
There’s no doubt that Matt has come on and improved a lot this season in the Premier League, and he fits the profile of players Newcastle want to sign.
Matt has 122 appearances for Wolves with 13 goals, but we’re not sure if he would be a good signing for Newcastle.
