Newcastle Reported In £40M Bid For Lille Strike Pair

9:30 am, Thursday, March 24th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 54 Comments

There is a report today that Newcastle want both Lille forwards Moussa Sow and Gervinho.

Moussa Sow - Newcastle after this striker?

23 year-old Gervinho is an Ivory Coast winger who can score goals and is very fast, and Sow is a big powerful out and out striker, who currently heads the French scoring charts.

Newcastle have been linked with both players before, but there will be significant competition from other top clubs for these two players.

The report suggests Alan Pardew is willing to pay £40M for the two, but that’s way above what the two of them are worth, so we have some trouble believing that figure, it seems very high.

Maybe they though of the £35M Newcastle got for Andy Carroll and rounded it up.  :D

This story today may have come about because yesterday the local Newcastle Journal suggested that Newcastle already had two deals tied up, both players were Internationals, and the deals would be struck early in the summer transfer window.

It was some inside information the Journal had received (we hope it’s true),  and it’s interesting both these players are Internationals, with Sow having played for Senegal and Gervinho having impressed for the Ivory Coast last summer in the World Cup.

25 year-old Sow, who stands just under 6′ tall, has been scoring goals for fun this season in the French League, and currently has 19 goals for Lille, who are currently 4 points clear at the top of the French League.

His contract runs out  two years come June, and Gervinho’s contract has only 15 months to run.

Sow joined Lille after four seasons at Rennes and was a free transfer, and the player  been an instant success, and he  has had a number of clubs now watching him, and they are said to include both Newcastle and Sunderland.

He was born in Mantes-la-Jolie, France and played twice for the France U21 side, before representing Senegal at full International level, and he has so far got 5 caps.

Gervinho – Ivory Coast International forward

Gervinho can play on any wing and up front too, and has looked very good when we’ve watched him this season, and has lightning speed and has also managed to score 12 goals so far this season.

Gervinho started his career at Belgian club Beveren, before moving to Le Mans in France ion 2007, and he joined Lille in 2009.

We’d be surprised if this report was true, and there’s no way Newcastle will pay out £40M for just two players, when so many other positions need strengthening for next season.

But we’ll see soon enough, if we can secure our safety in the Premier league first of course.

Comments welcome.

I know this story’s origin is a combination of the Journal and Metro, but do we have any credible sources on this one? Anybody based in France have any insight into it? I just can’t see us spunking 40M on 2 players.

  • 2 Purely Belter // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:40 AM

Yep i can really see Ashley forking out 40 mill on two players.

    someones having a laugh

  • 3 lewytoon // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:41 AM

i wish this would happen but for more like 25- 30m, these players r defo not worth 20m ea, if the reports r true and were bidding 12m for gerivniho why offer 28m for sow??

  • 4 lewytoon // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:43 AM

just heard a rumour by text that leeds newcastle agree smith and 1m for max gradel. i don’t know if we need him tho

  • 5 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:44 AM

Sounds like Mike Ashley if you ask me….

  • 6 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:46 AM

Max Gradel would be only good for us if he gets his chance to play for us ( meaning the bench), but I would highly doubt that because Alan Pardew hasn’t shown much faith in Nile Ranger.

  • 7 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:48 AM

    lewytoon:
the Alan Smith rumour has been around for a while, I just wish it would come true, he is finished as a Premier League player. I like the look of Gradel, and he certainly fits our purchase profile.

  • 8 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:52 AM

gettin rid of smith would be gr8!! gradel umm i dunno think he’ll be like routledge out of his depth

  • 9 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:55 AM

Gradel like to go past people and has an attackers eye for goal. Routledge is terrified to go past defenders because he knows his crossing is worse than Spidermag’s.

  • 10 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:55 AM

as for these two sow and gervinho i agree 40m wayy to much 20m each trippin id say 25m! gervinho 12m anh sow 13m 40m this ashley we talking bout not shepard(excuse spellin mind gone blank)

  • 11 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:56 AM

Getting rid of Smith could be a mistake for us, I mean by this if we dont buy another DCM to replace Smith, I dont see any players doing that role in the current squad.

  • 12 Angryman the Angry fan // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:57 AM

Cracking headline, so excited that i might go out and BUY 10 SEASON TICKETS!!!

  • 13 lewytoon // Mar 24, 2011 at 9:59 AM

i think if we get rid of smith we could possibly get that french cdm we have been linked with

  • 14 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:00 AM

what role is that Derka sitting on the bench coz wen hes fit he doesnt play?

  • 15 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:01 AM

i say we push on for S.Kalou giving the chance he be a gr8 prem striker so to pavulchenko

  • 16 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:03 AM

That could be a great move,Lewytoon.
    Or this lad ?
M, Sven Bender, Borussia Dortmund, (21).

His nickname is “Manni,” after former Bayern Munich midfielder Manfred Bender, but unlike his namesake, Sven’s not one for elegance and casual brilliance. He’s what Germans call a “Kilometerfresser,” a player who eats up the ground and does all the hidden, dirty work that enables others to shine. The former TSV 1860 Munich player stepped in when veteran Borussia midfielder Sebastian Kehl picked up an injury in September 2010 and has played a massive role in propelling Jürgen Klopp’s team to the top of the table. Few positions in the national team are more contested than defensive midfield but it’s only a question of time before the intelligent and humble Bender will stake his claim.

  • 17 PoolieToon // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:04 AM

I can safely say this story is utter rubbish. Completely out of character for Fat Mike. they are 2 players i’d like to see in black and white but not for anything over £25 mill.

These along with Gredel and Jarvis, maybe Krancjar would make good use of the Judas money and i’m sure the fat git could reach into his clown pockets to buy another player and our side would be sorted.

  • 18 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:04 AM

    You have sumed it up,Daneevz.

  • 19 dawid182 // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:05 AM

I don’t know, that’s absurd! 40M? I think the possible price for this duo the 20M. We should buy 4-5 players from 40M!

  • 20 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:06 AM

do be honest we need some new defenders two coz the last few weeks they been awfull either that or new defending coaches!1

  • 21 dawid182 // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:07 AM

by the way, I don’t trust in Sow, I guess Lewandowski or Barrios would be better, than he

  • 22 repo // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:07 AM

what a load of shit we dont know if we going to be in the prem next season..

no chance of us spending 40mil on 2 strikers.

  • 23 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:14 AM

The headline is way off the mark, but I do know that Pardew was in France, so there is no smoke without fire. However, anyone thinking Fatty is gonna loosen up 40 mil is out of thier mind.
we can buy this lot for 40 million:
    Taraabt
    Gradel
    Jarvis
    Lens
    Gervinho
    Krancjar
    Elmander
    Gera

Now that would give us a bit of strength in depth, hell we could even drop Ranger to the reserves to teach him a lesson!

  • 24 DerkaSayWhat // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:15 AM

    Nice one,Lynxie.

  • 25 daneevz // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:20 AM

dont see larrsson in that line up lynxie we def will get him in for free

  • 26 dawid182 // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:20 AM

Possible ways: Lewandowski or Hulk,Krancjar, Baines or van der Wiel and we need a small, fast winger (Tottenham has a Bale,Lennon,Modric and they’ll be there in the CL) for ex.: Malouda or Santi Cazorla. Ajax’s centre backs Vertonghen and Alderweider are very solid defenders. Would be good one of them for the team.

  • 27 Indian Magpie // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:24 AM

I cannot believe it, 99% of ppl who are NUFC fans would not believe it

  • 28 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:27 AM

Oh aye, I forgot about Larsson, aparently he cant wait to get out of Brum, despite picking up a cup winners medal. He is a decent crosser of the ball so in that respect would be an improvement, however, when Benny is fit, I dont see him getting in the team, but its up to him.

Indian magpie @ 27: Thats nowt, I cant believe its not butter.

  • 29 PHOENIXNIGHTS // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:27 AM

Paper talk and we will have shit loads of it for months. Listen nothing will be looked at until premier survival is assured. Also we will do our buying in the last few days of the transfer window (maybe giving Kuqi a one year extension as we fail to bring anyone in)

    Keep the Faith

  • 30 nufc.romania // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:39 AM

    …………………….Harper…………………….
    Simpson.. Collocini.. S. Taylor..Enrique
    ……………….Barton…Tiote………………..
    Gervinho …………………………..Ben Arfa
    …………………Ireland……………………….,
    ………………………Sow……………………….

With, Gutierez, Gradel, Nolan, Ranger, Best, Gosling, Williamson as backup

That will be nice, but i don’t think it will happen :(

  • 31 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:43 AM

    Phoenixnights:
Thats a good point. The only reason that the club would ‘leak’ news of potential signings is to build up the clubs profile, or to improve season ticket sales for the gullible. If you were trying to buy a masterpiece for less money than you possibly should, or under the noses of a rivbal, you would hardly shout it from th erooftops would you? No-one heard a peep when we signed Chieck Tiote, or Ben Arfa, thats because we did not want to alert any other (more attractive ) teams to thier signatures. Slience is golden, Loose lips sink ships etc etc . No news is good news. believe nothing of what you read, and even less of what you hear.

  • 32 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:44 AM

Guttierez is going to Lazio. My neighbours milkman’s son has been told by his history teacher’s girlfriend’s mam.

  • 33 Keano9 // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:54 AM

Sow and Grevinho would be good signings but not at that price i would at least expect 25Mil for both
and we need 2 out and out strikers not just 1 we could bring in Ricky van Wolfswinkel
if so this could be a potentil line up
    ————– Foster——————
    Simmo–Willimson–Colo–Jose
    Grevinho–Larrson/Barton/Ireland –Toite–Benny
    Ricky van Wolfswinkel– Sow

    Bench:
Harps, Nolan, Airey, Ferguson, Saylor, another Left Back, Guti

  • 34 Stuart // Mar 24, 2011 at 10:57 AM

    Lynxie,

No-one heard a peep about Ben Arfa? It was the longest and most annoying transfer deal I’ve ever seen i think lol.

That deal should give us hope that we can still attract quality players because when we signed him there was also big clubs in Germany and England that were in for him aswell but he chose us.

  • 35 GeordieGerman // Mar 24, 2011 at 11:02 AM

Stuart, Bremen didn’t want him. They had a look at him but took Wesley instead.

  • 36 supervil // Mar 24, 2011 at 11:03 AM

I’d be mighty annoyed if we spent £40m on two unproven players.

  • 37 Solaidback // Mar 24, 2011 at 11:19 AM

Well the way I read it in the Metro was that these pair were PART of a £40m summer spending spree by the club,… not that we were paying £40m for these two alone… so either I read it wrong or Ed’s got it wrong with his sensational headlining.. lol ;)

I reckon around £27m would get these 2 & then another 3 players in with the other £13m & a couple of freebies like Larsson maybe.. :)

  • 38 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 11:26 AM

……….And then the Fat controller is gonna give us all a free taxi to and from th egame every week, and a free pie at half time, and build a new stand on top of th eeast stand, and put under chair heating in………….
Wake up man. fatty is on a mission to recoup what Shepherd done him out of (his own fault by the way) so he is not tuned in to spend like Abramovic. get used to marlon Harewood / Shefki Kuqi/Sol Campbell type transfers. fatty has a complete lack of faith in giving out gigantic mercenary wages etc and signing 15million players is not on his radar. Its all about the added value of a signing in two years time, how much PROFIT can be made. Fatty does not want income through the turnstyles, its transfer outgoings that will get his 80 million back in quick time.
Hence, better make the most of Jose over the next 7 or 8 games (if he plays) because he will be gone, just like the badge kissing pikey was.

  • 39 Brutooon // Mar 24, 2011 at 12:29 PM

40 million is too much, 40 million at least can get good 4-8 players (depend on how we get some bargains)

  • 40 craig bell // Mar 24, 2011 at 12:41 PM

they would be class signings… duno about the price tho. And people seem to think were already safe so they should be concentrating on keaping us up before looking at 40 mil bids!

  • 41 PHOENIXNIGHTS // Mar 24, 2011 at 12:59 PM

I am amazed people are saying we need 8 -10 new players. If we add 3 starters to the list below and a little more quality for the bench we have a good squad to push on with.
    Forster
    Simo
    Collo
    Willo
    Bullo ?
    Tiote
    Barton
    HBA
    ? right midfield
    ? forward
    ?forward

    plus
    Krull
    S Taylor
    Gosling
    Nolan
    Ranger
    Best
    Vukic
    Kadar
    Ferguson
    Tavernier

In my humble opinion bring in 6.

    Keep the faith

  • 42 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 1:05 PM

    phoenixnight:
Good collection, not far short of a decent playing squad.
However, you are assuming that some lunatic is gonna take Ameobi off our hands ha ha ha that has cheered me up no end. Tthey will have to get Rentokill to get him out of the club.

  • 43 MT // Mar 24, 2011 at 1:29 PM

40m is is a big money for newcastle united, we just need one of them,we need add more new face in the other position, one LB(not sure Enrique
leave or stay),wingers(too weak this post),MF(like
Leroy Johan Fer),one goalscorer.Get rid of Smith,
    Guthrie,Løvenkrands & Campbell etc

  • 44 RossGellar // Mar 24, 2011 at 1:30 PM

This could be quite the summer transfer season. I have to have faith that it will be.

I’d be interested in seeing us go after a player like Huntelaar too. A team with Huntelaar, Gervinho, Arfa, Barton, and Tiote would be a very good team.

  • 45 Lynxie // Mar 24, 2011 at 1:38 PM

    Ross:
two reasons really, the ability or willingness of the owner to release substantial transfer funds, and the attractiveness of coming to Newcsatle (no European football to offer). I personally think they have started negotiations already with secret targets. I bet they wont be 15 million quid ones………

  • 46 Oleg G // Mar 24, 2011 at 2:04 PM

    What???????????????

    400000 Billions? hahaha….

ok. 25M max. I mean, how much they think they will get for them?

But, unlike some people, I would like them to come. 25M is a good price for these two.
Another 10-15M for the rest. 2 first class players and some defense and backup reinforcement.

  • 47 chuck // Mar 24, 2011 at 2:59 PM

Based on what we know about Ashley and his parsimonious ways, why would anyone suggest he would spend forty million quid on two players.
It` simply nonsense and why are you in turn repeating the same nonsense Ed. ?

  • 48 chuck // Mar 24, 2011 at 3:06 PM

Please stop this delusional nonsense about bringing in big name players.
A Punchion, or some free agents perhaps.
But please enough ! it`s not gonna happen and most of you know it, it`s becoming very boring.

  • 49 steve1980 // Mar 24, 2011 at 3:16 PM

I really shouldn’t have thought so. In case, spending that kind of money is insanity anyway. We’ve been there before frankly, over priced players who end disappointing big time. Look at Man City, and some of the shocking players they’ve brought in for huge money. How about the following:

    Out:

Wayne Routledge (can’t cut it at this level)
Alan Smith (nowt left in the tank)
    Xisco (utterly useless)
    Shola Ameobi (lazy, lazy, lazy)
Leon Best (gets caught offside every other attack)
    Ryan Taylor (great c’ship player)
    James Perch (ditto);

    In:

Seb Larsson (free, good crossing ability/free kicks)
Johan Elmander (free, had a great season)
Jonny Evans (on the skids at Man U, doesn’t play often, vers’ defender, can play left back, ala Hughes in the Robson era)
Niko Kranjcar (genius footballer, can’t get a game at Spurs ’cause place is occupied by Bale & Modric)
James Morrison (the one to watch WBA – Dorrans gets the attention, but this lad is a better all round footballer)
Matt Jarvis (the England cap has put his price up, but its not like we’re short of a bob or two – pacy winger, got a finish on him)
Nikola Kalinic (had a difficult time in a team where he’s had no service for most of the time he’s been there, but he’s a deeply underrated player, would work well with Elmander)
Kris Boyd (a finisher, always will be, had a difficult time in an absolutely shocking side)
Scott Brown (good authoritive midfield general, send crazy Ireland back and take this lad instead).

  • 51 roe997 // Mar 24, 2011 at 4:47 PM

sow is on a very poor contract,so he wouldnt be valued so highly gerviniho is heading for his last 12mnth so i beleive the value of both wud be arnd 20m if that.hope we get them, would be great for us.ben arfa and tiote could have a big pull on the deal.

  • 52 beefman13 // Mar 24, 2011 at 5:19 PM
