There was news earlier this week that the Newcastle club already had two Internationals ready to sign for the club, as soon as the summer transfer market opened.
And there is further news today in the local Sunday Sun that essentially backs that news story up, as they are reporting that Newcastle have informed them there have been ‘significant progress on the transfer front over the last couple of weeks.
As the Journal already reported, the Sunday Sun reports today that Newcastle are in advanced talks and negotiations with two International caliber players, and both those reports seem to be consistent.
We wonder if one of those players is Lille’s Gervinho, who has continually, been linked with the Newcastle club, and is a team mate of Cheick Tiote with the Ivory Coast side.
It was interesting that Gervinho made a statement a couple of days ago, saying he thought Newcatsle were a good side, and said nothing that was not consistent with negotiations possibly already going on between his agent and the Newcastle club.
The Sunday Sun is also reporting that Newcastle have no interest in Hamburg striker Mladen Petric.
With the departure of Andy Carroll in January, many fans and even some players have questioned the extent of Newcastle’s ambitions under owner Mike Ashley, and nothing could be better if early in the transfer window, the club announces some big signings.
That would help enormously to keep players like Joey Barton and Jose Enrique at the club, and it would be a catastrophe if either of these two top players for Newcastle leave Tyneside in the summer.
This news today seems to suggest Newcastle have ambitions, and we therefore hope the news is accurate.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2We have received some excellent press in France over our treatment of Benny.
The media…as we ll as players have been very positive in their coverage of us and apparantly a number of French players have sounded out Benny about whether or not we would be interested in signing them when the French national squad met this week.

Comment #3I am expecting Mike Ashely to spend in excess of £40 million this season all on transfers. The £35 million for the sale of Carroll and I’m sure Ash could add atleast £5 million from TV revenue etc. So it should be £35 plus the inital budget we had planned for the summer if Carroll was not sold; even if we did this and unloaded Smith, Perch, Campbell it is likely we will be running at a profit; and it is likely that if we do spend £40 million and it’s invested well then we’ll be in Europe the following season.
Cmon ash, give us something to cheer about finally!

Comment #6in the january window AP said we were 3 players short – then AC & willo left = now five short
we need to transfer out 4-5 ( Smith, Perch, Campbell, Guthrie & another & a goalie ) = 9-10 to come in just to make up the numbers
preferably 3-4 good money buys (8-15range) plus 5-6 good frees or cheapies (2-3m range)
why not?
we have the money, we have scouted the players, we have been told the promised land is just over the hill!

Comment #7Supermacnumber9 is right, we need to make quite a few signings… Smith and Campbell will surely go, although I doubt Perch will (he’s okay as a squad player. One or two others may go if they decide that they want to move on. So I can see the need for a good seven players at least.
As for us already have a number of signings practically in the bag, I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s time for people to renew their season tickets, so I could hardly rule out a few rumours being planted.
Having said that, if there’s ever going to be a transfer window when we can expect cash to be spent, it’s this one. The club should be on a much sounder footing by now and the team need to press on up the table next season – assuming we stay up that is!

Comment #10I was watching River Plate vs Newel last night and i must say i was more than impressed by River’s CB Jonathan Maidana,,,his positioning was more than perfect and he didint lose a single battle in the air against Newel’s 2 big strikers.
Erik Lamela is definetly the new CR7,but he is way too expensive for us,if he can get him for 12 mill pounds then for sure his value will be tripled in 2 years.
I can only imagine this team:
…………………………….Harper…………………………
Jonas………….Maidana……Colo………….Enrique
…………………..Tiote……….Barton………………….
……….HBA………………………………Gervinho…….
…………………………..Lamela…………………………..
……………………………Sow………………………………
Subs:Krul,Nolan,Best,Taylor,Gosling,Ireland,
Wiliamson.
Amazing team if you ask me

Comment #11Partizan- if we are looking Sow and Gervinho for 40 million, where are we going to get the money for Lamela?

Comment #12Magpies-till-d3ath…….I dont think we’ll pay 40 mill for those 2,maybe 33 max.
The sale of Xisco,Smith,RTaylor,Guthrie,Lovenkrands should get us more mill.
So that leaves us with 13mill to get Lamela but not Maidana 🙂

Comment #15as for us coughing up 30-40 million on 2 players……theres more chance of me sh*ting gold bricks than that happening. we are going to put up low amounts of money on huge potential thats what the club have said. we might get one or two players on a big fee but am not holding out much hope

Comment #16They offered 25mill for him? I’d say he’s worth it but we wouldn’t pay that much for one player. Well as good as he is i hope we don’t.

Comment #20I’ve been saying for a few days now I got a bit of inside info that the Gervinho ‘deal’ is supposed to be pretty close to being finalised and all the other bits and pieces we’re hearing seem to be pointing that direction as well.
There is however not a chance in hell that Ashley is going to spend £40,000,000 on 2 players, no matter who they are.
Gervinho for around £12-15million plus the money for Taiwo. The remaining money we have will likely go on one or two ‘for the future’ and hopefully a right winger.
I think Ashley will actually spend this summer coz if he doesn’t he might as well pocket the £35million and finally sell up.(Which is always the fear in the back of my mind)
I’m thinking some exciting signings and a push for Europe is in store next season though. Fingers crossed eh!

Comment #23Hazard, Gervinho, Sow, Jarvis, Taiwo ? forget about it !
More likely, Puncheon, The big Icelander, and perhaps a free agent like Larsson.
Why Being we have BA, Tiote, Joey,Nolan,
Ireland, Gosling and Jonas are we concentrating on mid fielders ?
Look i`m not against having a surplus of good midfielders, but it`s up front and the back four
that needs strengthening.
Backups for both wing backs and another decent CD, thats if Enrique stays, which i don`think will be the case.
Up front we really need help, our present bunch apart from Best are useless and it`s about time we had a clearout.
If we avoid the drop, it`s going to take major dosh to make this team into a competitive side.
In which cas forget the Puncheons and the cheapos and sign some real quality.

I totally agree we need to back up our defense and get a good attack force. Some of the players that newcastle are looking at are really good players but they are all strong forwards and wingers, we are lacking them positions but we need to think defensively aswell as attack, theres a player called douglas who plays for FC Twente who’s a really powerful CB and is only 22 hes 6″ 4 amazing in the air and has basically the same composure as David Luiz.
Also in attack I wouldnt bother with that Sow guy hes gonna be far too expensive as Lille will want to hold on to him, why not Thomas Muller who only sometimes gets played for Bayern Munchen and for some reason they play him as a winger when in the world cup he played as a striker and won the golden boot also hes only 21 and has alot of potential.

Comment #26As we have ald notice that the most worried part will be the defence and attack.
Defence is weak. Attack is not strong.
Mildfield and GK is ok.
At least there’s more than a decent fellow backing one another.

Comment #27Sorry to be negative lads but is there any player on the planet we havent been linked with? This the same speculation that has followed us around for as long as I can remember.
Seems everyone has assumed we wont be relegated.Looking at the form of some of the teams below and our paper thin squad and dodgy manager,we are in the dogfight – make no mistake.Cant see too many top players showing interest if we start to sink

Comment #28Gervinho, seems to be a good player although he is not like Pelé, but in my opinion he will be useful for Newcastle United. I think we shall need another centre forward to play like a target man, to receive crosses or passes from Gervinho up front. Gervinho should play wide, using the flanks of the field. Maybe Peter Lovenkrands can do this job I mean play as a centre forward.

Comment #29I think we need a new keeper too. Forster and Krul aren’t ready and Harps is starting to look a little tired (perhaps even a little disinterested, at times). Not sure if that’s a long term thing, but he needs to get back on his game, or we’re going to start having prblems in an area that’s looked secure for a long time.
As far as the other transfer activity is concerned; I’m encouraged by the reports we keep hearing, but it really is too early to get excited. I think (hope) we’ll have a good transfer window, but we need to remember that a lot of the players we’ve been linked with can be offered a lot more by the likes of Liverpool and Spurs, wohse transfer policies often appear to be let’s see who Newcastle are after and snap them up.
