Newcastle In Talks With Free Agents – But Which Ones?

Alan Pardew said yesterday that Newcastle were already in negotiations with some free agents.

Zoltan Gera – are Newcastle interested in this player?

So it’s not surprising there’s one story out today that Newcastle are negotiating with Fulham’s Zoltan Gera, whose contract at Fulham runs out in the summer, but we wonder if this player is good enough to come to Newcastle and he turns 32 next month too.

And after all the 71 times capped Hungarian International is finding it hard to nail down a starting place in the very ordinary Fulham side this season.

First of all, this is what Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Newcastle recently:

“We are in plans and negotiations with a couple of players out of contract in the summer.” ‘I’m as sure as I can be that we will be bringing in new players.”

“I understand the frustration with what’s gone in the past, but owner Mike Ashley doesn’t want to put his investment into this club to come here, lose games and be abused.”

‘I genuinely feel he wants to say, ‘I got it right here’. Hopefully he’s going to prove that.’

There are a number of good players available in the summer on free transfers, including Sebastian Larsson (Birmingham), Johan Elmander (Bolton), and Taye Taiwo (Marseilles), as well as Gera.

Whether Newcastle go after Marseilles’ Nigerian left back Taiwo this summer, will depend on whether Jose Enrique will leave the club in the summer, and something needs to be decided on that sooner rather than later.

Midfielder Zoltan Gera looks certain to leave Fulham on a free in the summer, but we have to be honest and say we have our doubts on him.

But we’d be happy to see Larsson, Elmander and Taiwo arrive in Tyneside in the summer – for nothing – but that’s unlikely to happen of course, and Taiwo will be sought after by some big clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Pardew mentions the club are talking to two free agents, so it would be good if Newcastle can bring in two top players for nothing, and maybe this is what caused the local papers to say that two International class players had already agreed to join Newcastle in the summer.

Gera’s agent has said half the Premier League clubs want to sign him, but his words seem only a ploy to get some PL clubs actually interested in signing his client, who will be 32 this summer.

We don’t think he would be a good acquisition for Newcastle, but think the other three potential free transfers could be good “buys”.

What do you think?

Did Newcastle not sell Gary Speed to Bolton for 750,000 in 1998 cause he was supposedly past his best, he went on to have 4 fantastic seasons with Bolton, not that Gera is as good as Speed was but we shouldn’t go completely on age!

Think Bosingwa’s wages would probably be a stubling block, but I’d love to see him here.

Kranjcar is a massively good shout, he looks immense every-time he comes on for Spurs and he never gets game time. Worth a shout for sure.

gera and reo-coker, welcome to pardwho’s world !! Pardwho preferred harewood and mullins to mascherano and tevez, so wouldn’t set the bar too high !!

God forbid we do go down again, but would pardwho keep his job because he’s ashley’s appointment on a 6 year contract ?

RH, regarding post 15, spoke to a bloke who used to work for Aspers Casino (I know, hardly the most credible source) who reckons that AP works for free because he owes DL and MA over £3M, hence the 6 year deal. I can’t help but wonder if there is any truth to that?

would absolutely love it if we somehow managed to snag Mirsolav Klose, who is also a free agent.

However, from what I have been reading, it seems that we have been going after players such as Keiren Westwood, who is a solid keeper, but I’m not sure if inbetween the sticks should be our main area for concern at this moment in time.

reo-on a free would be fantastic…it would be decent cover for tiote (cover that is) and his strength is that apparently he is a leader style of player that would fit in well with the squad..he was captain at west hm at only 21 i think…ill have him

Only good freebies i can think off that we stand a chance of getting/ and are good players. are Taiwo and Alan (Braga)

Reo – would be a good “Backup” player but do you think he would come to us to sit on the bench? he isnt good enough to get a starting role ahead of Tiote and Barton.

Larsson – Average player, slow, doesnt help his defence, scared to beat his defender, he just isnt any good APART from setplays which he is really good at but do we want a guy whos poor only apart from Setplays? No!

Gera – Too old, only would hold a backup role in the squad if he is ok with coming on as impact sub then take him depending on his wages, but he isnt good enough for a starting role.

Elmander – Not a proven goal scorer, do we need another Loven/Ameobi who hardly score. granted he did well at the start of the season but he hasnt scored in AGES for Bolton, and his record over the few years is rather poor he is NEVER going to score regularlly 10 goals a season and THATS who we need not Elmander, BUT as a sub, maybe.

WHY are we bothering with the freebies, its the typical players who are average and wages are gunna cost a bomb because of the free agent status, if we have agreed deals with Larsson who “Snubbed” us in Jan and Gera two players who are both average. would be rather worried we are just making do with this average players because they are free agents, taking players just because there free isnt a good plan.

And usually they arent free when you pay then a years wages which are usually massive compaired to what they previouslly had and also Agent plus player fee we may be paying out MILLIONS for these players 🙁

Agree Kranjcar is a very good player, right away the fans who have been brainwashed by the Ashley clique in regards to spending, jump on it, oh ! he would be expensive, oh! he would want big wages !
Look we all are aware there`s no cheap shortcuts to being a top team, in which case you have to spend money in order to have a competitive side.
    Dont believe it ?
OK! tell me one top side in Europe that did`nt spend big on both wages and transfer fees and dont tell me Arsenal (which is supposedly the club Ashley bases his business plan on) they spend when they have to.
It`s an old addage you have to invest money in order to make money.
On the other hand mid league mediocrity is another choice and i think thats a more likely direction, regardless of what you read or hear.
Just cant see Ash. putting out the dosh.

I agree, i wouldn’t bother with Elmander or Larsson, both flatter to decieve massively. Looking at the possible Bosman’s for 2011, no one particularly stands out, just lots of “alright” players like the two above candidates plus Gera & Reo Coker. New contracts for Barton & Jose Enrique are agenda priorities; offload Smith, Ameobi & Ryan Taylor; go for Matt Jarvis (good, honest player), Niko Kranjcar (tremendous, skillful), Jonny Evans (frustrated at Man U, rarely plays), James Morrison (very promising, doesn’t get mentioned as often as Dorrans), Kris Boyd (was in a bad team, still think he’s a goal scorer), James McCarthy (brilliant young player) & Scott Brown (solid midfield general, good organiser). We should have Gosling & Ben Arfa back as options, which will make such a difference.

I am available on a free for next season, but wages may be an issue. Rangerman, you can lose a lot of cash real fast gambling, particularly in someone else’s casino – AP’s gambling debts, the rumour that won’t go away.

Krancjar’s current wages shouldn’t be a huge problem, Tottenham have a strict wage structure too, so the difference wouldn’t be too huge. He also really wants to be playing so would probably take a reasonable pay cut. The problem is other clubs (like Blackburn with their new money) offering him much more than he is earning now *and* being able to offer him a 1st team place. We can only offer him the 1st team place (and arguably can’t even do that…)
