Are Newcastle After The Next Didier Drogba?

There was a report out yesterday that Newcastle are ready to bid £19.2M for Anderlecht’s young super-star Romelu Lukaku.

Romelu Lukaku – 17 year-old Belgium wonder-kid

Tottenham have also been monitoring this 17 year-old whiz kid, who is likened to the great Didier Drogba, and thanks to reader lewytoon (these reader names are just great!) for alerting me to this.

The news is that Newcastle already seem to be very busy in the transfer market, and this lad looks  like a future super-star, at only 17 years old.

Newcastle scouts, including manager Alan Pardew, have been interested in the Belgium International for a while, and have been tracking him for over a year.

But with Andy Carroll gone, the signing of this 6’3″ young striker could be money well spent by Newcastle  – even though the price is said to be a whopping £19.2M (€24M).

Harry Redknapp had been interested in the Belgian in January, but the high price tag seemed to put the Tottenham manager off.

The report also suggests Peter Crouch could end up at Newcastle, to make room for Lukaku at Spurs, but there’s no chance of that, since Peter at 30 is too old, and is the finished product.

Newcastle want to sign young players just like Lukaku, who can improve on Tyneside, and whose transfer market value can rise too.

Of course we have no idea if there is any truth in this story, but it would be an exciting signing for the Newcastle club, and a good one too.

The Antwerp player turns 18 next month, and has 35 goals in 86 appearances for the Belgium club, and he looks like the kind of player who would be an exciting addition to the Newcastle squad, and would be a starter at the club.

Lukaku has already played 9 times with a couple of goals for the Belgium senior side, and he signed a professional contract with Anderlecht when he turned 16 in May of 2009, and made his first team debut just 11 days later.

Let’s know what you think about this potential signing – but we have to think some big clubs would also be interested in this top young player.

Comments welcome.

Normally I would say no, crazy amount of money to spend on one player but I ask everyone this question. Would you rather Carroll or Lukaku and £15 million… I know which one I would chose!

Thing is, as much as I’m sure there will be significant money spent in the summer I still can’t see MA spending over around £8m for any one player. Certainly not £20m.

Saying that though it would be an epic signing.

    hahahahaha

as much as i would love this to be true, we have no hope in signing him. hes already talked about clubs like real madrid, ac milan etc.

We need to look in south america for cheap brilliant players

A nice pipe dream, but teams with far more clout in terms of finances and stature are watching this kid. Again, bags of potential on display, looks far more composed (at times anyway) at 17 than Rooney did. He could be a future star, or he might not develop. For the sums being bandied about here I would much rather go for 2 strikers who are ready now?

This will never happen. Although if it would I would be a very very happy young man. Still, it’s quite obviously just tabloid gibberish.

there is no way mike ashley will spend tat much money on player and i dont think we are in tat possition to sign him cause our side has not enough depth to survive next season so first thing is to INCREASE the squad depth by which we can play in every cup games with first team players rather than playing youngster s and losing in 3 rd round but with more depth in the squad we can win a cup every season so forget lukaku and bring in 5 more players with tat money

Oh dear, I see Joey Barton’s magazine article has some lovely new version of events that happened at citeh. This could be a can of worms opening up here:

He’s had a recent drop in form. He was linked in January with a £35 m move to Chelsea, to play with his biggest idol, Drogba. Theres no chance to get him tho. Extraordinary talent, who could well become the best striker in the world. I would be over the moon to get him, but we do unfortunately not have a chance!

One thing I just thought about is if we buy too many African players we could leave ourselves short on numbers when the African Cup of Nations comes around next year. ( I know this lad is Belgian!! ) But is maybe something to consider for other potential targets

    @ G about Barton I totally agree.

He should keep it shut and focus on the present. Any chancesof Newcastle sighning up any players from city is our the window surely after his blast at Barry and now digging up old crap like this. Not that i think we have much chance of landing Adebayor but I would have loves us to tryand lure A. Johnson

sign him, even if it costs £20million, especially with the policy of buying youngsters with a view to making a profit, if torres was worth £50million after having a poor season at liverpool, god knows how much this kid could be worth when he becomes the premier leagues top scorer.. £20million will seem a bargain!

He’s a extremely talented player but come on,thats a price we cant afford especially if we want to rebuild our squad. With a good scouting from Carr
i’m sure he can come up with 5 good players for that price.
If we sell Enrique for around 9 mill + Carroll’s money(not all of it,thats for sure) will leave us with 35-38 mill to spend in the Summer.
More than enough to make a top 7 team for next season,,with wise spending i mean.

I’m so happy that we have a player like Shane Ferguson in our team,,,trust me guys,my instinct never ever let me down when it comes with young players…….this player with the right tutorial and playing time will become a 20 mill target in 3 years from now.

Btw,,,when it comes to Enrique’s replacement,i’d go for Veloso from Genoa,,,typical DM but he can play as a LB aswell. With the current standings,i think Genoa would let him go for 7-8 mill.

    My squad for next season

    ………………………….Harper…………………………..
    De Silvestri……Colo…………Taylor……….Veloso
    …………………………..Tiote…………………………….
    ……….Barton……………………………..Jonas……….
    …………………HBA………….Nolan……………………
    …………………………Falcao…………………………….

    Out:

    Lovenkrands-1 mill
    Smith-1 mill
    Xisco-2 mill
    Enrique 9 mill
    R Taylor 2 mill

    IN

    Veloso-7mill
    De Silvestri-7 mill
    Falcao-16 mill
    Larrson-Free

would be interesting to know how many players would have joined us if barton wasn’t here.

The ego does seem to have landed somewhat !!
Yes he’s had half a good season out of 4, but when you start talking yourself up and rubbishing other people, it’s a worrying sign of insecurity.

would love it..& if ashley decides to spend 20 mio on one player i think we have a chance of bringing him here.. let’s face it..real, chelsea, milan dont exactly play 17 year olds.. but they would defenitely want him in about 5 years time..

also..just read an article about vuckic in SLO magazine..he’ll come back in about 2-3weeks..he’s been injured since october or november..

If we’re dreaming, I’d rather slap down £35m for Falcao and Hulk, BAM, top 4. Pay for themselves with CL qualification. Then sign 2 or 3 freebies.

Hulk, Falcao and Ben Arfa in the same team, the thought makes me weak at the knees. 60 goals a season, right there.

I think we need top be just the tiniest bit more realistic about not only who we go for in the summer, but who will want to come to us.

I see a lot of dealings happening later in the window, when players realise they aren’t being sounded out by other clubs. Sad but true. We’ll be first choice for very few players.

…. of course, I could be wrong. We did get Ben Arfa afterall.

Lukaku would be an incredible signing, even at £20m. Would you have swapped Carroll for Lukaku and gervinho? I think I would. This team would be great and have the potential to be outstanding!

    ……………barton…tiote
    Gervinho….ben arfa….gutierrez
    ………………..Lukaku

    Wow!

lukaku is very good player, but,24 million is much money for one player, to michael owen him pay much and dit not work.

we should make play your youngs, nile ranger, haris vuckic, phil airey, and signing young players, cheaper and with future, exemple: LUUK DE JONG, MARKO ARNAUTOVIC, CONNOR WICKMAN.

if he is worth 20m now imagine what he would be worth in 5 years if we have a budget of 30m then its alot but if we spending 50m then it would be a great signing, next season we could lineup like this

    ———————–forster———————–
    simo——-saylor————-colo——-m’beugue
    ————-tiote—————-nolan————
    lens—————-benarfa—————-menez
    ———————-lukaku————————

i know there is know barton and enrique arn’t in the lineup cos i think they will go in the summer and the popular gervinho but i think lens would be a better option because we don’t lose him for 6wks every other year and will cost less
