Alan Shearer has again said he would consider going back into football management, two years and 11 days since he was appointed the Newcastle manager on April Fool’s day, 2009.
Alan Shearer – says he’s still keen on management
Alan managed Newcastle for 8 games, and although he and Iain Dowie did their absolute utmost to avoid relegation, they were ultimately unsuccessful, with just 5 points from the last 8 games of the season.
That included two 1-0 losses against Fulham at home and Aston Villa away in the final two games of the season, after Newcastle had crushed Middlesbrough 3-1 at St. James’ Park in what seemed to be a win that could have saved Newcastle.
As it turned out, a single point from those final two games would have been enough for Newcastle to survive, and Hull City would have been relegated, because they had an inferior goal difference to that of Newcastle.
But it wasn’t to be as we all know, although Hull City were finally relegated last season.
Shearer talked about having some job interviews since he left the Newcastle job:
“Yes, I have had interviews and got close to taking a managerial job. I loved my eight weeks at Newcastle, despite the way it ended.”
“I would seriously consider going back into football, but it would have to be right.” “It’s imperative that you have a chance of success at your first job. That’s what I would be looking for.”
There’s no way that Alan would be given the job at Newcastle United again, well at least as long as Mike Ashley is owner of the club, and Alan has to remember that success in coaching is simply getting the very best out of the players you have available.
It’s not taking a job where he has a guaranteed £40M to buy players or something like that, which is what he seems to be looking for.
Bobby Robson was so great at in his management career, because he could always get the very best out of his players, and his success at Ipswich over 13 years (1969-1982) was just phenomenal, and he didn’t do too bad at Newcastle either. 😀
But we’d like to see Alan do what other potential future managers are doing, and get some decent experience in management.
Lee Clark is doing very well at Huddersfield Town, where he has the Terriers joint second top of the League One right now, and is a possible future Newcastle manager. Lee also likes to have his teams play in the Kevin Keegan way, and attack the opposition.
Gary Speed has everything it takes to become a good manager too, and is great friends with Alan of course, and after managing Sheffield United, when he hired John Carver as his assistant, Gary has recently taken the Wales manager position, which proved to be a good grounding position for Mark Hughes.
Alan has to learn the game as a manager, and he cannot really expect to get a plum job first time out, but we think that’s what he’s probably still hoping for.
Football management is a lot different than playing, but Alan does seem to have those qualities needed to become a top manager, but he may have to start at a smaller club first.
Some time in the future we would expect Shearer back at Newcastle as the manager, but when that will be, we have absolutely no idea.

Comment #42Ashley has made so many mistakes it hurts to think but slowly i think we are starting to see the way the club in general is being run…and it is the right way in my opinion. But after the sale of Carroll and Enrique (Didn’t look bothered vs Villa) he needs to splash the cash not only to get fans on board again but to avoid the dreaded second season syndrome!

Comment #44Yeah the clubs run right, that’s why Jose, Barton, Nolan…etc. or any player worth his weight are stalling on their new contracts and each and every player up for sale.
Exodus.
Even the players have little confidence left in this owner.

True, I would of respected him even more if that was possible if he just dismissed him or said, well they paid alot so that sort of game is expected etc…
As Shearer has made it know he hates Ashley and would probs of had contact with Andy etc… Maybe he got told what “Really” happened on TDD.
Still think he is a Coach type not manager, or assistant but its a problem he wont get a top EPL job? Does he want to start is Championship and not go anywhere with the team like Roy Keane did?

Comment #47Davytoon, If you’ve had the stadium tour, does that qualify you as a ‘club insider’?
Ashley is still the richest owner after ManU, Chelski, Arse, City and Spuds. He didn’t need the 50 mil from AC and JE to fund a spending campaign in the summer.
He is preparing us for a sale imho.

Comment #50On topic……..Shearer, great player he was, isn’t cut out for to be a manager……….just have a look at the relegation match at Villa (if you can bear it)……he was slumped in his seat for the best part of an hour looking clueless on what to do, when all we needed was a goal to stay up……if he’d taken the assistant manager’s job when KK offered him it, things may have been different, but his ego wouldn’t allow him to serve a man who was as popular as himself………..instead he held off and took the job at the worst possible time……making it easy for MA to destroy 2 legends in one season………

Comment #51To all the Ashley apologists, 2 names
JFK and Pardwho. That’s how much ambition the guy has for the club.
The first thing a decent owner would do is appoint a good manager with a sound CV, not a drinking or gambling croney.
I for one hope Dave 1961 is right.

Comment #52Off topic………, we are not out of debt…..we are just indebted to Ashley instead of Barclays…….he wants that back, hence the p*ss poor squad we have and why all our good players are unsettled……….this of course, according to Davybtoon, makes MA wonderful in his glass eyes. The truth is, there are no reasons, other than lack of vision and ambition, why we can’t be a top 5 club regularly again…..yes, money has to be spent but NUFC, with everyone on board, is an irresistible force that is self-perpetuating….just look how far Spurs have come in a short time….a bigger club than ours? Nearly relegated 3 years ago…….nowhere near the number of fans……
If we had shown some intent in ANY of the transfer windows under Ashley, then our talented players wouldn’t want to leave………..instead, it looks like another opportunity wasted and MA might just get away with it again in the summer, judging by the lowered expectations and obsession with balance sheets around here……

Comment #53I don’t rate Gary Speed as a manager I think Sheff. Utd were only too happy for him to take the Wales job. I don’tsee him being their after the European chamionships ( not that they will qualify ). Speed like Shearer in my opinion will be remembered for what they done in their playing careers NOT their managerial ones. Only time will tell but personaly I just can’t see either making top managers
