With the Newcastle manager saying today that the Newcastle club have already bid money for some in-contract transfer targets, and have also offered deals to some free agents, expect quite a few stories coming though about who Newcastle may be after.
Kevin Gameiro – not the first time Newcastle linked with this striker
And there’s a report today that Newcastle United are believed to be keen on Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro, who is a French International.
The 23-year-old 5’8″ tall striker has already played three times for France, and four times for the France U21 side, and has scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 this season for Lorient.
The news is in a News of the World report today, and the fee is said to be close to £9M, and certainly this is the type of player we would expect Newcastle to be going after in the summer.
Other clubs said to be interested include Arsenal, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
Gameiro has Portuguese heritage through his paternal grandfather, and was therefore also eligible to represent Portugal at international level.
It seems as though he looked at possibly playing for Portugal, but then In August of last year, he was called up to the senior French squad by new manager Laurent Blanc.
He made his senior debut in the match against Belarus last September, appearing as a second half substitute, and only two months ago he earned another cap, in France’s 1–0 win over Brazil.
The 23 year-old started his senior career at Strasbourg in 2005 where he scored 17 goals in 68 appearances before moving on to Lorient in 2008.
The French International has so far scored 49 goals in 105 appearances for Lorient, and is his first class career so far Kevin has 66 goals in 173 appearances which is not too bad at all.
This is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with Gameiro, and the first report of the Geordies’ interest was last November.
He looks a decent striker.
