Newcastle vs Manchester United – Match Preview

We don’t expect anything out of the game with Manchester United on Tuesday night at St. James’ Park.

Maybe that’s because Newcastle cannot field anywhere near their best team, with all the injuries and suspensions the club has had this year.

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan will miss the game through suspension and Ben Arfa, Dan Gosling, Leon Best and Alan Smith are all out with injuries, although Gosling is back in training since last Wednesday, which is some very good news.

With three defeats in the last 4 games , and only 4 points out of the last 5 games, Newcastle have not been in good form of late, and if they are to get anything out of this game, that form will have to improve dramatically.

Tomorrow will also be a test of just how much manager Alan Pardew can inspire his troops,  for what looks like a very tough game against an in-form Manchester United.

Shola Ameobi is again dogged with a niggly little injury, this time to his  to his knee, that could keep him out of this game, after his knee swelled up just before the Aston Villa game, which ended in a rather woeful 1-0 defeat.

While the scan taken last Monday showed no damage to Shola’s knee, he’s still not 100% fit – yet – so it’s a good question as to who will start up front with Peter Lovenkrands, after the inexperienced Nile Ranger managed to disappear in the second half at Villa Park.

Alan Pardew has said today that Shefki Kuqi is not good enough to start for Newcastle, but if Shola misses the game, Shefki could still be the best option for the second striker position, and we’re going to assume Shola will not make this game.

Far better that Ameobi be fit for the game at Blackpool on Saturday, than start him tomorrow night, and have him then miss the Bloomfield Road game.

The good news is that Ryan Taylor is back from his suspension and could play a part tomorrow night, and Stephen Ireland is now fit and very keen to show what he can do for the Newcastle club. But of course with his girlfriend badly injured last week in a car crash he probably will not even be on the bench.

The other good news is that Cheick Tiote returns from his two match suspension, and that’s really good news.

We still think that Ryan Taylor out on the right wing and Joey Barton in central midfield would be the best option for Newcastle’s midfield, so this is the side we ‘d like to see start tomorrow night:

Harper
Simpson Coloccini Williamson Enrique
Taylor (R) Barton (c) Tiote Gutierrez
Kuqi Lovenkrands
Subs: Krul Taylor (S) Campbell  Ferguson Perch Guthrie Ranger

That’s a much stronger bench than last time out, and it may be a bit early to include 21 year-old midfielder Gosling there, but he’s back in training now and should be available to play for the first team very shortly.

If Shola doesn’t make it tomorrow night, we’re not sure who Pardew will pick up front for the second striker position alongside Lovenkrands, other than to give Kuqi a start, but we’ll know soon enough.

We hope we don’t get any more strange looking Alan Pardew selections, like we saw at Villa Park, where too many players were played out of position, for no good reason.

And surely Pardew will start that back four –  Simpson Coloccini Williamson Enrique –  even though it means Steven Taylor will start  on the bench.

The keys to the game are that Newcastle have to play a lot better than they have done over the last 5 games, since they had that great 2-0 win on the road at Birmingham City.

Two huge players for Newcastle tomorrow night will be Tiote and Barton, hopefully paired in central midfield, and with this side, Newcastle could even have a chance, if only somebody can score the goals, given that both Best and Ameobi are missing.

The defense also needs to be at its very best at all times,  with both Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs returning for the Red Devils.  Oh my.

And finally,  the Newcastle crowd can spur on the lads to play way above themselves, and maybe if that happens, then  Newcastle can get another famous victory this season against a top four side.

Howay The Lads!!

I would start Ranger instead of R. Taylor. R. Taylor is waste of space. He’s only good at taking free kicks, but Barton will not let him take any free kicks.

i reckon he might play 5-4-1 with Saylor in middle of defence (he would have to be in middle cos hes useless on right or left!)

Haha was just thinking that 😀

Man Utd havent got a great away record so i dobt think we can all expect them to win. They have only won 5 games away from home this season.

Having said that we have Kuqi and Lovenkrands upfront. I feel sorry for Pardew.

I love how you’re all immediately against Kuqi despite every time he’s came on, he’s made a consistent impact.

And arfa chance, they love scoring against everybody. Wayne Rooney, on the other hand, has wet dreams about scoring against us.

Not against him Thump. but doesnt strike fear into United seeing Kuqi/Loven upfront. of ALL the teams in the EPL that foward lineup must be easilly the worst.

JGreaves. I cant see him changing the formation in defence from 4 at the back for the first time this season apart from the disaster when he played Campbell against Stoke pall.

He will want to be competitive in midfield and hit them on the break.

I think he will go with 4-5-1 with the following team bearing injuries mate.

    ————————-Harper————————

    Simo————Willo———-Collo——–Enrique

    Jonas—–Barton——Tiote—–Ireland—–Fergie

    ————————Ameobi————————-

Let Ameobi no that he is only on for 45 mins try to get him to work his tits off instead of loafing. and the n bring young Ranger on for the last 45/35 mins.

Spidey is beter on the Right in my opinion, and he will give Manure something unexpected to think about. Young Fergie may turn on something special to upset his name sake. have got a feeling that this young lad has got something special in his game.

Would be an ideal to see Ranger/Airey upfront. we have NOTHING to loose, they are at Pos1 so we dont stand and chance tbh with soo many out. but would be nice to see our attacking future together, maybe playing each other in Youth they may know each other works unlike last week with Loven not even bothering to latch onto Rangers flicks.

Much better bench? Face it. Its just as bad as against Villa but here it will be even worse. With villa we had a chance even if it was just Airey and Kuqi, but Airey and Ranger/Kuqi could be worthless against a side sat pretty on top of the PL table.

never imagined the pickings could be so slim. Injuries and suspensions are normal, but this is ridiculous. Course, it has something to do with a certain last minute sale, but its water under the Tyne Bridge.

    For me its

    *****Loverpants****Strolla

If Harps can’t go, then its Krul. If Stolla can’t go, has to be Ranger with Kuqi last 15 mins. As for Ireland, no use protecting him at this point. Get him in…we need a little spark of creativity in the middle. Guthrie if he can’t go/cut it.

Bench is Soderburg (if no Harps) Saylor, Raylor, Fergie, Airey, Guthrie, Perch.

gorskino10, Rangers flicks? If Lover didn’t bother to latch on to them, it would have been that he didn’t expect them. All I saw from Ranger was someone who wasn’t interested in passing and if he had, we could have been 1 up after 15 minutes.

That’s the team I’d put out, Mo. If Shola’s injured, I’m not sure who I’d start up front.

    Lovenkrands, Ranger or Kuqi…..

Gorskino, I don’t remember seeing Ranger giving Lovenkrands much to work with, completely the opposite in fact. Twice in the first half he chose to shoot (badly) when Lovenkrands was wide open and witing for the ball. Ranger ain’t all that yet, my old son.

I would prefer a bit of Kuqi/Airey. Neither have anything to lose and possibly a lot to gain. Ranger seems a bit too relaxed on the pitch. Lovenkrands scores nothing. Kuqi is a massive figure in the air mixed with a big of Pace and skill in Airey I reckon that could be our best up-front.

Kuqi has been like a sledge hammer against the defences when he has been on made a right nuisance of himself, I really like his attitude ranger can make a chance by speed and skill ? But kuqi he bulldozes his way through and that will give the united defence something new to worry about whilst loverman slips in maybe. Rooney the granny sha@g@r I hope has a shocker

At the start of the game he won like 6 headers in a row with Loven not even bothering (so after that he didnt bother) going for em, with a striker whos quite tall you MUST expect knock downs. Plus Ranger wanted to score he isnt a striker that setups he wanted to finish the move off LIKE loven wanted, you cannot two players wanting to not pass and just finish the move off puts so much pressure on the rest.

TBH it would be interesting to see the youth strikers him and Airey they would have more understanding than Loven/Ranger.

Airey should ATLEAST be on the bench, because if we dont see what he is lilke now, he will get EVEN less chance next season if we improve like we HAVE to do upfront.

Another point is whats the point on playing Kuqi, he wont be here next season, too old, and hasnt done a 90 minutes in many many months. Whats the point? Play someone who is going to be our future or apart of the setup for years rather than a guy who will be with us for a few months.
