Alan Pardew keeps being asked if Newcastle can attract top players in the summer.
St. James’ Park -a magnificent stadium
And as we’ve said a few times on this web-site, we don’t think the local Newcastle fans realize just how much the Premier League games are seen on TV around the world these days, and just what a good name the Newcastle United club have.
Yes, Newcastle haven’t won anything for 42 years – picky picky – but the way in which Newcastle play, like they did on Tuesday night, and the way they amazingly came back against Arsenal in that never to be forgotten 4-4 draw, and the way the club is supported by their fanatical fans, continues to draw fans from around the world to the club.
So when you ask whether good players will want to come to Newcastle, just imagine some potential target player watching that game on Tuesday night, and would they be impressed with the Newcastle United club?
The answer is yes, and Alan Pardew already knows that, as he said today:
“You can play for a top club in France and get 18,000 watching you or a top club in Holland might get 8,000.”
“You have 50,000 here and every away game sold out. That’s a fantastic pull and there is the history that goes with this club.
“This club sells itself. We will be in the market for players because of the huge fee we received for Andy Carroll.”
And a successful summer transfer window for Newcastle isn’t whether the club can spend all the £35M they got for big Andy, that’s the way things were measured in the past.
The key is whether the club can bring is say six top players, maybe two free agents, and then a couple of big signings, and maybe a couple of signings in the Cheick Tiote or Mike Williamson vein – good players who have been scouted out by Newcastle, and come in fairly unknown and for a relatively small fee.
That would be success in the transfer market, not spending huge money on a player who turns out to be hopeless and came to Newcastle only for the big wages, and we all know that has happened far too many times in the past.

Comment #1I’d be happy with that, if these players are young, better than what we have and play in the needed positions.

Comment #2Dont forget we may get rid of Perch, Xisco, Smith, so six players in means 3 more for the squad total. With Gosling and Ben Arfa to come into the team we’ll be looking good if we manage 6

Comment #3i think if we brought in just 3 players with injury records similar to colo’s then we would be alot stronger as long as they are good players.

Comment #8Ed, Sorry but I think you’re wrong…. Man Citys recent player purchases had nowt to do with the similar club history that they have to ours… the fact that they could line their sky rockets with some middle eastern used notes spoke much louder than their 30 odd year wait for a trophy.
I dont want us to go down that route, but were gonna need more than passion and some chamiponship purchases to get us moving forward next season
