Newcastle Drop To 12th Place – Sunderland Hammered 3-0

After today’s early results, Newcastle have dropped down to 12th place in the league table.

Sunderland lost again, this time at home to Fulham, who are in form and won the game fairly easily 3-0, and move on to 45 points, 4 points above the Magpies and a goal difference of +7, much better than that of Newcastle.

Sunderland, after beating Wigan 4-2 at home last weekend, continue their dismal form and their goal difference has dropped to -13, but they are still level with Newcastle on 41 points, but two places lower in 14th place.

Sunderland have taken just  4 points from the last 11 games played, since they beat Blackpool 2-1 at Bloomfield Road on February 1st.

Blackburn had one of their biggest wins of the season when they beat Bolton 1-0 at Ewood Park, and go to 38 points and 15th place and give themselves some breathing room for the last 3 games of the season.

Martin Olsson scored the winner after just 19 minutes, and Bolton lost their second game in a row after being walloped 3-0 at Craven Cottage during the week.

Wigan took a good point at home against Everton, who came back to equalize, after former Newcastle winger Charles N’Zogbia scored an excellent opportunist goal for Wigan after 20 minutes. Spaniard Michel Arteta missed a first half penalty for Everton, when Al Habsi made a great save to his left to block the shot.

Leighton Baines got the equalizer for the Toffees when he made no mistake from the penalty spot on 77 minutes, and it was anybody’s game after that.

Blackpool picked up another valuable point at home against an in-form Stoke City side, and for the first time this season there were no goals scored at Bloomfield Road, as the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

But it was a good point for the Seasiders. who are still 4th bottom and level with Wigan on 35 points, but with a goal difference just one goal better than that of Wigan – you talk about being close!

And West Brom won again under Roy Hodgson when they beat local rivals Aston Villa 2-1, and that was after they were reduced to 10 men when Paul Scharner was sent off after 61 minutes for two yellow crads. Villa were ahead after just 3 minutes so  you cannot deny West Brom the win.

The winner also came when they were down to 10 men, and Youssuf Mulumbu scored after 83 minutes, so West Brom move to 2 points above Newcastle and one place higher in 11th position, and  Aston Villa are one place below Newcastle on goal difference.

So there’s still a lot to play for in terms of getting into that top half of the table, and Newcastle really need to get something out of the game at Anfield tomorrow.

Newcastle are now 6 points above the drop zone, but West Ham, Wolves and Birmingham all play tomorrow, but the worst that can happen for Newcastle is a Wolves win and the Magpies would then be 5 points above the drop zone.

In my opinion Newcastle United will finish between 13th-10th place, just because we are not a good team. I hope that next season the team will be stronger and better. Newcastle United are a Big Club like Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool. We should finish top four or five. Maybe next season. We need more skillful players.

This is exactly why it bugged me to hear Pardew saying that ‘we can relax now’- errmm NO WE CAN’T!!! This is Newcastle United and disasters is a part of life for us. If we are dragged into this relegation scrap now I’ll have to blame Pardew. He has impressed me but that quote he made just smacks of overconfidence. We should tread careful and still look behind our backs as the 3 W’s are getting points!

Can’t we ever do things the easy way for once!?

I am an optimistic but I am more of a realist. I hope you’re right and we are safe. Ben Arfa will hopefully make an appearance in the last 2 games and can help us out a bit. Damn how bad we’ve missed him in our team! I can’t wait to see him back.

1-0 win would do, even a draw wl do, bt al 3 pts m over da moon.

Come on guys – seriously, we’re safe. For us to go down we’d need:

    – To lose all four of our remaining games
    – The five teams immediately below us to win most/all of their games (bearing in mind some are against each other)
    – The 18th team – who have struggled all season – to win two and draw one of their remaining three games.

Have a look at the table and do the maths. It’s massively, massively unlikely.

    Anger is right!
For instance, Wigan have won 7 all season 35 games, 1 in 5! There are too many teams down there, that won’t win more than 1.
When we went down it was a similar story. You kinda knew after 34 games ,that we would not win more than 1 of the last 4, and……

    @ AngerOfTheNorth,

They would also have to score 4-7 goals a game to beat us on goal difference which i cannot see happening, even if we loose the rest of our fixtures.

As a TOON fan i can see us getting 5 points from our last 4 games.

    Liverstool – 1 point
    Brum- 3 points
    Chelski- 0 points
    Boing Boing- 1 point

but as a realist, i can see us getting 2 points from Birmingham and West Brom.

I do not think we should worry too much in terms of points as we are as safe as we could hope right now. But our players should still give everything they have to get us as high as they can, then we can start to worry again in the transfer market

Whether you like it or no, Pardrew is a better manager than Hughton and far more experienced as a manager. Hughton may have been a better motivator and man management manager but Pardrew is better all-round. Hughton was soooo defensive! That game against West Brom away was my worst game of the season.

do this, the only way we can go down is if you put completely stupid results in like Blackpool beating Spurs and Man Utd.

We are safe, 1 point will mean we are 100% safe

Lets face it we were sitting on the top of mid table in no mans land. No chance of a Euro spot at all. Now some other teams have caught us up it will hopefully gives us the lads the grunt to go out and give it a decent whack as a win will now lift us up a place instead of just solidifying our season. I dont think we’ll get relegated but its funny how all these teams who have had bad seasons ie Villa, Sunderland etc are level with us yet we feel we have a good season simply because we just got promoted. We want to get at least 7 points from these last 4 games. Starting with Liverpool. 3 there and I’d be sooo happy. Watching the game tonight with a bunch of Scousers

The biggest mistake the Mackems made this year was to sell Bent and not replace him!
But then it was Bent that wanted to leave eh!

As for us we just need to concentrate on our remaining games!

Despite Pardew,s cockiness we can,t relax and we need to get something at Liverpool today! Be pleased if that happens, but can,t see it coz Liverpool are in form at the moment after a shakey first half of the season!

Charlietoon that is it in a nutshell, we have had a good season as we have just been promoted and we sit around mid table, the clubs around us are either doing worse than they did last year or have not improved.

So although we are in a very similar position to each other league position wise we have very different reference or starting points which makes our season good or bad respectively.

I personally think we are safe although I still feel uneasy until it is confirmed mathematically, try the jwheelie 12 link and you will see that there has to be some seriously bizarre results.

Brutoon the bottom 2 have max 12 points left with Wigan max 9 points, but a lot of those points would have to come from teams that are below us thus keeping those teams below us so we are basically safe.

Over 17 place we are a game in hand, three full results (we are 6 points clear so two wins and a draw needed to overtake us) and a 23+ goal advantage (making level on points a win for us) .

I know there is being pessimistic but I think this is taking it a little bit far don’t you think?
