The Sunday Sun is reporting today that it is their understanding that Newcastle have already given up the ghost on trying to keep Jose Enrique at the club.
Jose Enrique – on his way in the summer
Newcastle’s main priorities in the summer are said to be a striker, a left-back and a central midfielder.
That explains why recently Newcastle were linked with 22 year-old Toulouse and French U21 International left-back Cheikh M’Bengue a couple of weeks ago and an initial bid of £5M, which was turned down.
The Newcastle scouts are said to be out in force in Germany this weekend, as they continue to check out targets there – wonder who those would be?
Lille’s Gervinhio, who scored the first two goals in Lille’s 5-0 hammering of Arles last night, is said to be a target, but whether Newcastle can persuade the 23 year-old Ivory Coast International to come to Tyneside is a good question, as some big clubs will be after the player.
We watched Leeds 1-0 win over Burnley yesterday, and Ivory Coast winger Max Gradel looked an exciting player, and he’s already been linked with Newcastle since January.
The Sunday Sun is also reporting that a number of senior players at Newcastle will be unloaded in the summer, and apparently they already know who they are.
Sol Campbell and Shefki Kuqi will be two of them, and maybe Alan Smith, Wayne Routledge and James Perch also, but Newcastle need a bigger squad next season to combat all of the injuries they will pick up over the season.
But it looks like any chance of keeping Jose Enrique on Tyneside may have already gone, if the Sunday Sun report today is on the mark.
We now have to hope the club can get as much a possible for him, and that the fee received is immediately reinvested in the squad – this summer!
