Gameiro Turns Down Newcastle – Magpies After Shane Long

News today in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle are ready to move for Reading striker Shane Long.

Shane Long – 23 goals in 46 games this season

It also seems that French striker Kevin Gameiro, who has looked very good every time we’ve watched him,  wants to play his football in Spain, and therefore will not be coming to Newcastle.

Newcastle apparently bid £8M for the Lorent striker, as one of the deals they have already put in, but his personal preference is to play in Spain, so I suppose we can cross him off the list, and that;s a pity.

And Gameiro scored twice last night in Lorent’s 3-2 win at Lens.

It will not much impress Newcastle fans that the club are now turning their attention to Reading’s Shane Long instead. Shane Long to replace Andy Carroll – that doesn’t sound too exciting at all.

The good news is the Sunday Sun understands that moves for several international class players are now at an advanced stage, but this local paper has been off the mark before – just as a caution. However we hope they are right on this.

24 year-old Shane Long was born in Gortnahoe, Ireland, and has played 196 times for Reading since 2005 with 52 goals, and has had a great season this season with 23 goals in 46 appearances, but of course that’s in England’s second division.

Shane has 19 caps for Ireland and 6 goals.

Newcastle must know that this summer is an extremely important transfer window, and they should be looking to bring some top class players into the club.

This news today is not particularly exciting, with Newcastle after a player who is completely untested in the Premier League.

Kevin Gameiro is one of the best strikers in europe at the moment IMO.He will definitely fits the bill to wear the famous no9.Hope this story has no truth in it and Gameiro will be our new no9.

If Mike Ashley really wants the club to be playing eropean football again needs to signs talented players like Gameiro,Gervinho etc etc

None of our players scored 23 goals in the Championship Ed. As long as he’s young and, unlike our current strikers, has a good knowledge of where the net is, I’d be perfectly happy.

We’re on a budget guys. Even if we had the whole 35m, which we don’t, that’s not even that much in todays climate. 20-30 million buys you a Carroll or a Suarez, the scum payed what, 14?, for Gyan, and he’s sh!t anyway!

Gameiro is one of my favourite strikers in the world ATM. He is quality.

Shane long is also a very good player, would be worth a go at 5 mill.

Will be most prob get 2x 8mil players 2x freebies and 2x championship players I would be happy with that as long as we get a top striker in as I think best can cut it in the prem he’s better then shola

I think the risk is greater with foreign players (like Gyan) of flopping in the premier league, Wouldn’t mind seeing Long in a Black and White shirt, as long as we can get him for half the price gramerio was going to cost. Long is better than Best was in the Championship, so hopefully could be similar to when Bent stepped up to the Premiership. Would like to see another striker come in as well, as well as a left back for Jose (if he goes) and a winger who can play on both sides.

I’ve only seen a bit of Shane long play, but I don’t mind us after him if he combines him with another top quality forward like sow and of course gervinho. Altho I wud just like us to have two quality forwards, but then again luque was quality in Spain, and was poor when he signed for us for big money. So, u never can really tell, but its more encouraging going for the better quality proven player. Lovenkrands looked a different player in the championship for example.

davy – not if he wants to play in spain, or play in europe, or both. :/

I guess the huge problem with the EPL is that since Spurs & City’s recent growth, the top 6 spots are fairly guaranteed. All 6 of those have invested incredible sums of money – even Arsenal, who don’t like to admit it.

I can see this summer (like the last few windows!) being a disappointment. Yes, we now have funds to use but we’ll still struggle to attract the best players.

Earlier in the week Ed had an article up including Pardews comments about the transfer window and took a ‘we can still attract the best’ take on it.

I, like some others including a lot of the media and few blogs, took it as a negative, hard to get what we want, warning about the summer.

Yes, we get a big home crowd, but this versus bigger wages, european football or challenging for europe which others can offer- no chance!

Oh, and yeah. I’d love Long to be a Newcastle player too, but it might be too big a risk to only get him in.

Though I don’t think just because Long might be £4M, we don’t have to buy another striker for £8M. Are we shopping for clothes here??? I mean, cmon. Starchild Carr and co will for sure have watched and seen players and judged them for their playing skills? No need to go for those proven, but way over-priced for Newcastle’s budget.

I think that’s a much bigger gamble than getting more players for lesser dosh.

    In Carr I trust.

    Watch this:
Gameiro is awesome.. Disappointed if we didn’t get him..

About Shane Long, 23 goals in 46 appearances is not bad at all! Judas did only 18 goals last season if I remember right… If Long costs something 5 mln, I think we should try it.

I think Pardew will get something 20 mln of the Carroll cash, so maybe Long would be better option than Gameiro because we need at least 4 new players; two strikers, one winger (Gervinho), one defensive midfielder like Tioté (Wanyama, NRC or Matuidi) and MAYBE one right back (Simpson’s our weakest link).

    Here is my list:
    Strikers (two of these):
    1. Gameiro ~10 mln
    2. Long ~5 mln
    3. Sow ~10-15 mln

    Wingers (one of these):
    1. Gervinho ~12 mln
    2. Jarvis ~10 mln

    Defensive midfielder (one of these):
    1. Wanyama ~1 mln (one of the best players in Belgian League this season, only 19 yrs old)
    2. Matuidi ~6 mln
    3. NCR ~FREE

Very, VERY disappointed if Pards didn’t get the whole 35 mln, as promised… Well, it’s Ashley… “We will spend in the summer. Every penny of the £35m will be invested.”

Looks a very good player in the lower league and it’s difficult making the step up, especially in his position. But Carroll, Ashton and Doyle have proven it can ‘be’ done.
The price tag worries me’ though, 4 million plus sell on clause at best for me’.
Would not like to see him as our N.o 9, want a more physical player like Sow

As I live near Reading now, my daughter has been to a lot of Home and Away games with her mates this season. Her opinion is that he is rubbish and that is backed up with what I have seen. Please if we sign Long then we are back on that slippery slope. So lets pray it is paper talk.

Ed, you say Shane is unproven in the PL but what about Tiote, Ben Arfa….were they proven in the PL when they was brought in.

Unless there is not a great name from the big football scene brought in, fans will be disappointed. But what about the tiote story. An unproven PL player that has been a success.

I am not saying I am excited about Shane Long but whatever is brought it we have to judge after the next season is over and not even before it has started.

Long is a decent player, but nothing more. I’d not throw 10m after him, he’ll be expensive.

Newcastle have done well in the transfer market the last few windows, I’m sure they will be clever also in this window. We’re not Man City or Chelsea, we’ll have to buy smart.
