News today in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle are ready to move for Reading striker Shane Long.
Shane Long – 23 goals in 46 games this season
It also seems that French striker Kevin Gameiro, who has looked very good every time we’ve watched him, wants to play his football in Spain, and therefore will not be coming to Newcastle.
Newcastle apparently bid £8M for the Lorent striker, as one of the deals they have already put in, but his personal preference is to play in Spain, so I suppose we can cross him off the list, and that;s a pity.
And Gameiro scored twice last night in Lorent’s 3-2 win at Lens.
It will not much impress Newcastle fans that the club are now turning their attention to Reading’s Shane Long instead. Shane Long to replace Andy Carroll – that doesn’t sound too exciting at all.
The good news is the Sunday Sun understands that moves for several international class players are now at an advanced stage, but this local paper has been off the mark before – just as a caution. However we hope they are right on this.
24 year-old Shane Long was born in Gortnahoe, Ireland, and has played 196 times for Reading since 2005 with 52 goals, and has had a great season this season with 23 goals in 46 appearances, but of course that’s in England’s second division.
Shane has 19 caps for Ireland and 6 goals.
Newcastle must know that this summer is an extremely important transfer window, and they should be looking to bring some top class players into the club.
This news today is not particularly exciting, with Newcastle after a player who is completely untested in the Premier League.
