We saw the report yesterday and thought this youngster could be an excellent signing for Newcastle.
Victor Wanyama – 6’2″ Kenyan defensive midfielder
There was news that various Premier League clubs were after defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama, who is the younger brother of 24 year-old Inter Milan midfielder Mcdonald Mariga.
The clubs reported to be interested in this Kenyan, who turns 20 next month, are Aston Villa, Birmingham, Sunderland and Newcastle, and the youngster has said it would be a dream for him to join a Premier League club.
Cheick Tiote is the firsy choice defensive midfielder at Newcastle, but has had far too many yellow cards this season, and since returning from his two match ban he has managed to pick up a yellow card in each of the last two games.,
That tells us Cheick is going to miss games next season as well – he;’s missed 6 games this season through his various cautions, and when he’s been out of th side, Newcastle have now looked good in midfield.
So surely Newcastle will try to bring in some player this summer, who can fill the position of defensive midfield when Tiote is not playing.
The 19-year-old midfielder is currently playing for Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen in the Jupiler Pro League, the top football league in Belgium.
This is what Wanyama said about the news that Premier League clubs may have an interest in him:
“I am very excited to be linked with Premier League clubs. But nothing is done yet, it is paper talk,”
“But it is a dream for me to play one day in one of the top leagues in Europe and there is no better at the moment than the English league.”
From what we can find out Victor has played around 32 times for Beerschot Antwerpen, and was on loan in 2009 to Mathare United, a club that plays in his native Kenya.
The 6’2″ midfielder (it must be those McDonald’s hamburgers) had joined Swedish club Helsingborg IF in 2005, before joining his current club in 2007.
Wanyama made his debut for the Kenyan national team back in 2007, when he was just 15, in a friendly game against Nigeria.
It seems that this lad could be a star in the making, and we wouldn’t mind seeing him arrive at Newcastle in the summer.
