Newcastle Pursue Ivory Coast International Right Back

News today that Newcastle are interested in Hamburg right back Guy Demel.

Guy Demel – 29 year-old 6’2″ Hamburg right back

It seems the Ivory Coast International, whio stands  6’2″ tall,  is out of contract at Hamburg this summer, and although he turns 30 in June, Newcastle are still said to be interested and watched him over the weekend.

He doesn’t seem to fit the profile  of younger players Newcastle usually want to to sign, but maybe that’s not the case if the player is a free agent,  and can be brought to Newcastle for free, at least in terms of a transfer fee.

Newcastle scouts were said to be in Hamburg over the weekend to watch the Bundesliga game with SC Freiburg, and since the 29 year-old turned down Sunderland last season, that makes him a potentially good target for Newcastle. 😀

Demel began his career in the French Ligue 2 with Nîmes Olympique, and he even spent a year at Arsenal around ten years ago, before being transferred to Borussia Dortmund back in 2001.

Guy made his debut in the Bundesliga in 2003, and then left Dortmund to join Hamburg in 2005, and while at Hamburg, Demel has played regularly as both a right back and as a midfielder.

In May of 2006, the Paris born player signed a four year contract with Hamburg, tying him to the club until 2010, and no extension to that contract has been announced, so he seems to become a free agent this summer.

He has played 129 times for Hamburg with two goals, and has 26 caps for the Ivory Coast.

What do you think of this player?

@ F.A.G – I see a fair bit of Bundesliga, and he is a better player than Cacapa. For a fair price, he could be worth a look as competition for Danny on the right.

I saw him playing in the world cup with ivory coast and he was really good against top countries like brasil and portugal.

He’s definitely much better than simpson. He’ll learn from him.

Sign him up. World Cup right back playing for Hamburg and out of contract in the summer? Seems like a no brainer if we can keep his wages down.

If hes free and on decent wages then wouldnt be against it. Danny can learn from him and can compete for RB.

Might be a sign we will be getting cover in a lot of places because RB isnt a spot I consider to be high on the list of what we need

Solid full back. Strong and with pace. I sort of rate Simpson though, there are other positions we are a lot weaker. E.g. up front.

Porto’s president has said today that he would listen to offers for Hulk, Falcao and their defender Ronaldo. I maybe dreaming that we could land one of these but I think it would show the club’s intentions if we but in a decent offer for some of these and you never know, we do theoretically have the money so why not?

    Jan Stavik,

True, but we still need cover for RB and in an ideal world (or a bigger, better run club!) we’d have cover for all positions at the end of the transfer window.

He’s 29…. We all know how much Ashley likes giving his money to older players don’t we… NOT.

You can’t sign a 29 year old after p!ssing around Nolan & Bartons contracts for months..

Not sure how good is he but simpson is just not good enough. If only our left flank can attack.

    Right flank totally non-exitence.

To me, Simpson is a future England international. He is speedy, covers alot of ground, and a safe right back.
Although somtimes Simpson does let the opposition wingers get pass him easily.

With time, I am sure Simpson will improve.
Please remember this is afterall Simpson’s first full season in the PL.
