Ivory Coast International Gervinho, of French club Lille, has come out today and says he only wants to join a club in the Champions League.
Gervinho – wants Champions League football next season
Lille are still well placed in the French league, currently at the very top, and will likely qualify for the European Champions League next season.
They are currently just one point above Marseilles with 5 league games still to play, and have a superior goal difference to the reigning French Champions.
This is what Gervinho told Sky Sports:
“I am trying my best to concentrate on the final push for the league,” “We want to win the championship. Also, we are in the cup final.”
“At the end of the season, me and my advisors will speak to the club and see what to do but if I am leaving a club which will play in the Champions League, I will only go to one who is in the Champions League.”
“It’s the best competition and I want to be a part of that set-up every year.”
Gervinho has 14 goals in 29 starts for Lille so far this season, and has 25 goals in a total of 54 appearances for the club.
And of course if he stays put at Lille he will have Champions League football next season.
But that will not happen because the 23 year-old will want to big wages that come with joining a club in England or one of the other top European leagues.
Gervinho has 19 appearances for the Ivory Coast with 5 goals.
Newcastle can cross this player off the list is if he is adamant of only joining a club who have qualified for European Champions League football.
That will not be Newcastle for many seasons down the road.
